THIS is the sport they desperately want included in the Games.
"It not clear if the players will face criminal charges."
Of course they won't. It's Japan, where "illegal" means, "Please go ahead" if you're a celebrity, athlete, and/or politician.
"But the picture was notably absent from the mass-circulation Yomiuri broadsheet, which is owned by the same company as the Giants."
Big surprise, and a pretty good indication of how far anyone's actually willing to go to eradicate the 'illegal' actions here. Develop subjective amnesia, for sure... but admit history and take steps to stop it? not the Yomiuri and others affiliated with it.

This aint half as bad as the official ball rigging, making a big deal over this because it involves players just goes to show the big boys protection-ism around big Japanese money
nostromo
really??...

ah yes, it's regrettable. Maybe there can be a regrettable parade covering the decades during the opening ceremonies?

This is great news! Baseball is a truly terrible sport and should never be considered for the Olympics. Well done to these Japanese gamblers to keep Baseball where it belongs - at the bottom of can. The Olympics should take a strong stand against pitiful "sports" like baseball trying to make it to wider audiences

How on earth has this article not mentioned boxing?
Honestly, the idea that Japan is honest and doesn't bet on sports is laughable. Horse racing, speed boat racing, boxing... Heck, the idea that Japan is more honest than other nations in itself is laughable.

Nostromo: They always think as much. To be fair, though, in terms of the Olympics in 2020 you CAN say eyes are on Japan.

Amid suggestions that FIFA and most likely all other sporting bureaucracies have people in charge who are for sale to just about any bidder, a SAFer I know questions the outcomes of international rugby matches, especially major upsets.

PTTownsend: so, two wrongs make a right? Soccer is in no danger of being excluded from anything. Baseball is.

I live in Australia. One time I was in a local shopping centre a guy's iphone 6 dropped out of his back pocket when he stood up sitting on a bench. A person saw this and picked up the phone and handed it back to the guy. I have read numerous news articles about honest people finding large amount of cash in suitcases and decided not to pocket them and reported them to police. These things happened in many countries all over the world. Overall I believe the majority of Japanese are honest. However, that does not mean people in other countries are all crooks.

Yes. Many.

Yes. Gambling is "generally illegal" in Japan. Boat racing, Horse racing and Keirin are controlled by the government. Pachinko is a form of disguised gambling in which the police don't bother. The logic is that if they bust the pachinko parlors, illegal gambling will go further underground. Many people are missing the point here. The problem is not only the fact that the ball players were involved in illegal gambling. The bigger problem is that baseball players gambling on baseball has a potential of leading to "yaocho" or fixed matches. This has been a problem in the past with baseball and sumo.

Isn't Olympic amature sport competition? Japan will use pro team"
Gambling never illegal in Japan Keiba existed even during war era, Kuji, too.
Pchinko is not gsmble game because it gives winner keihin but no money directly in parlor
