Tragic.

He should be given a place, even if he just sits on the bench. Such an inspiration and actually takes pride in playing for his country.

At 34, he's still got it. I hope he'll still have 'it' at 38, in time for Brazil, 2014.

He has such a giant personality that his legacy may even grow stronger.

i disagree about his personality, he looks so weak and without opinion, otherwise he is a great soccer player but known mostly for his looks. A man who cares about his skin and hair more than about anything else, I think does not have great personality.

Isnt he in the USA? This means he will retire soon. Soccer players go either to the USA or Japan when their career reaches the sunset.

Sorry to hear it, but I doubt he would be playing full time even though he was not injured. He made a big mistake of going to USA as he certainly does not enjoy his stay there. Could have been his wife who talked him into it.

—After a stellar career at Manchester United, he was dumped by manager Alex Ferguson in 2003, but went on to win a Spanish league title with Real Madrid.

That's SIR Alex Ferguson to you AP...

LoveUSA

Have you ever watched Beckham play in even one match? Judging from your posts I'd say no. I even doubt you've ever seen any football match in its entirety...

It's a pity. So many dramatic matches this World Cup: England vs Argentina, England (on behald of Ireland) vs France.

He's on loan at AC Milan. The next World Cup is being held in 2014 in Brazil.

Not on the football pitch.

A huge blow for England and sad for the world not to see a true hero of the game at the world cup.

From what I understand, he will be missing a little more than the World Cup.

No it isn't. DB is now no more than a substitute.

The English F.A. have been trying to build him up into something of a world ambassidor for football - which explains why he is always played by the England coach, regardless of whther he can make a difference to a match or not.

Having DB in the squad - just so that he can claim to be the only player to have appeared in 4 successive world cups, just deprives younger, more useful players of making their mark on the game

So long as Rooney, $tevie G and Lampard stay fit and Cole's missus doesn't kill him between now and June we're in with a chance.

I will watch Serbia Japan game

I agree with spider. Time to give oustanding Palace ace Darren Armbrose his chance to put on an England shirt again. His 36 years strike against Aston Villa in the FA Cup was world class. Beckham has a quality strike, but he doesn`t go in for tackles and go past players much anymore.

LoveUSA, Serbia vs Japan will not be agreat example of good football.

stevie, are you a football player to critisize the national teams of two countries?

Moderator: Stay on topic please.

LoveUSA, i know rather a lot about football and i criticise my team and any team i think is justified.

No it isn't. DB is now no more than a substitute.

He deserves to be in the starting 11 in SA, more than most of the other players on that team. He always gives 110% and his work-rate is and always will be phenomenal.

earth to chotto, beckham has been a scrub for a decade now.

The injury to Beckham hurts England a bit but it isn't devastating by any means. The group will still come down to the USA and England with the key match-up being their head-to-head. A game Beckham would have loved to dig down a little deeper to send a little message to Donovan and the rest of his Galaxy teammates that England is still a team to be reckoned with- sadly that confrontation will not happen, as in turn Landon Donovan and company would love to be the ones to send Becks a message of their own, that the Americans have arrived with or without the help of David Beckham.

Branded, Beckham is on;y a sub these days. The Americans while improved these days will have their work cut out to trouble the current England squad.

Now on the dark side of Beckham's game, dependent as it is on vision and timing, has seen some slippage. Forget putting up hat tricks between his deteriorating skills and merely getting onto the score sheet might prove a challenge. But even if Beckham does play well after coming back from injury, his presence will likely do more harm than good.

This has done Capello a massive favour. Becks is past it, and always bottled it in the big tournaments anyway. Far more important to England's potential success are Lennon and Cole's return to fitness.

Well, nobody can "Bench It Like Beckham"
