China did put on a good show.

Very beautiful closing ceremony!!..

Despite opposition and sentiment against China, its winter games could not be stopped and were a great success for China..

Completing the cycle begun in the Beijing Games in 2008, launching China to the top of world pre-eminence with its unstoppable and inevitable rise as a world economic power. China had a remarkable performance and continues to increase its sporting power in the world, (China 9 golds - US 8, LOL..)..

Like it or not, Chinese games were a big success!!..

Thanks IOC, Thanks Mister Bach, Thanks Lord Xi Jinping and Thankyou so much to the Great country and people from China..

The Great Dragon from the east continues its unstoppable track to the first place on Earth..

Thanks Japan, you did it great, Keep going!!..

GO JAPAN!!.. GO CHINA!!..

The article forgot to mention that many athletes, like Takanashi Sara(from Japan) were disqualified from the Ski team event, by the allegation of the unfitted skiing suit size. That was outraging. They should have been informed beforehand that their suits were not fitted so that they could fix them in time for their events.

Once again, China put on a good show.

Seems someone here may have overlooked mentioning their “Lord” Putin again. Perhaps the lesson was learned: “One can only serve one master.”

LOL! Exactly!

the state-controlled media loved this.

Do the anti-free press, anti-democracy herds love the fact that China has a state controlled media, so there are no alternatives sources of information beyond big brother.

Are there online forums in China where Chinese residents and citizens can post anti state controlled media messages and/or messages that criticize their government without fear of reprisal.

It's no surprise to me to read that the nation with a state controlled media has hired online thugs to push anti-free press, anti-democracy, pro-CCP messages.

Norway, a country whose total population of 5 million is less than one half of one percent of the host country's, led the medal count, as it often does.

Norway is a winter sports powerhouse, great job!

Not true. Her jump was not counted but the team seamstress quickly amended it and she finished the event. Every team has a seamstress so these things happen. Rules are rules.

Bach’s speech was perfunctorily made. He came out on stage, waved the Olympic flag and thanked the hosts. This is one of the cushiest jobs ever.

13 ( +17 / -4 )

It wasn’t a good olympics because of China and the ROC. With the atheletes uncertain of their fate to compete!

The living conditions and mental state of the athletes. The lack of real snow. The poor 15 year old being drugged and the postponement of the award ceremonies for the deserving athletes that had done nothing wrong.

The attacks by China and the u.s on social media about which country the athlete was from and so on!

Not to mention it was on so late at night. Sorry guys it was one of the worst Olympics. Just because some journalist described it as the best!

As they said in the Matrix….. “open your eyes, I’m only offering you the truth nothing more”

3 ( +15 / -12 )

Thank god that’s over, hopefully the next Winter Olympics is actually fun

5 ( +13 / -8 )

Norway, a country whose total population of 5 million is less than one half of one percent of the host country's, led the medal count, as it often does. Russia was second, followed by Germany, Canada and the United States.

For those who accuse the US media of using whatever medal table is favorable to the US, this is how the US media still use for the medal table - the total medals, even when it puts the US 5th even behind Russia 2nd and Canada 4th! So no, the US media use the same total medals as they've always been, even if it puts the US lower

Meantime, the US figure skating team just want their medals and Olympic moment - they don't even mind if it's silver. But if it's any consolation, it'll most likely become gold

So Russia will lose a gold, the US will gain a gold, Japan will gain a silver, and Canada will gain a bronze

So the US will finish with 9 Golds but remain with 25 medals, while Canada will gain a medal and Russia lose a medal

China haters will always deny China did good.

Go China go, you did a great job.

Yes, Norway is the winter powerhouse. Contrary to what some people thought they could dethrone it just because they had a good Summer Olympics (no, it's not the US)

Japan won 18 medals - that's more than a lot of bigger winter countries!

Now the coming Olympics should be back to normal, when fans can celebrate again and access the internet freely for everyone to share the experiences

The 15-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for using a banned heart medication. The result wasn’t announced by anti-doping officials until after she’d won gold as part of the team competition, even though the sample was taken weeks earlier.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared her to compete in the individual discipline, ruling that as a minor she had protected status. But Valieva, although heavily favored to win, fell several times during her free skate routine, landing her fourth place and prompting a cold reception from her embattled coach, Eteri Tutberidze.

The Court of Arbitration and Russia set a kid up for embarrassment --one way or another-- by letting her compete. The Russian anti-doping officials (remember this was taken during the Russian national championship) should've been faster, and she shouldn't have been allowed to compete (TMZ is the same PED that Chinese star swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang is banned for)

The Russians are not even denying the positive test - they're just making the excuse that it got mixed up with her grandfather's medication. But it was later found out that she's also taking other related but not banned drugs, so that doesn't help her case. The adults around her whom she trusted have failed her

A very successful and enjoyable games, and a very stupidly written article.

This article talk more about Chinese and American athletes than the real starts of the games.

Congratulation to Norway that with just a population of five millions could overtake the giants.

Seems it went smooth for the most part. No baseless terrorist warnings like we’ve had in the past.

I thought it was a bad choice for a Winter Olympics with grass on the slopes and a nuclear cooling tower in the background of the snowboard events.

Pray for the Uyghurs.

1 ( +12 / -11 )

Great Olympics! I feel the opening ceremony was better than the Tokyo one but the Tokyo has a better ending with the mass athlete dancing.

Great performance from all teams, and congrats to the record medals of China and Japan, this is showing asian countries steadily advance in Winter Sports.

Greatly enjoy curling the most, strategic and fun to watch.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

The Norwegians have the best skiers and ski waxing team in their cross-country skiing team in the yearly european competitions. No doubt they took the Olympics too!

I thought it was a bad choice for a Winter Olympics with grass on the slopes and a nuclear cooling tower in the background of the snowboard events.

Nuclear? Every credible source confirms the site was an old steelworks.

The venue was constructed at the site of a 100-year-old former steelworks of Shougang Group, which had another connection to the Olympic Games: It was shut down before the 2008 Summer Olympics, because it was a source of the air pollution that once choked the city.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Go China go, you did a great job.

Uncle Xi is smiling.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Thanks for the correction but the point was the bad winter conditions for an Olympics and ugly area.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Agreed. I'm a big fan of winter sport, but had zero interest in watching this soulless propaganda stunt.

nice olympics are over.

lets wait next ones in Italy.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

What a biased article

2 ( +8 / -6 )

I am not exactly a proponent of the Olympics normally, and I think holding them during a worldwide pandemic is an unnecessary risk at best.

That said, China did about as good a job as could be expected. I actually stand totally corrected over their ability to hold a major sporting event in the middle of a pandemic; I didn't think anyone could possibly do it, and I was wrong.

Also, it is hard to not cheer for a country holding a successful event in spite of coordinated propaganda campaigns against them and in fact overcoming that very propaganda. As far as I am aware, no country actually engaged in a full boycott. Despite posters here assuming that the government would detain or kidnap athletes, that obviously did not happen. Every account we hear from athletes there had a wonderful experience, and I feel that this only helped people realize that China is not the dystopia they've been told by the media. The damage is going to take a long time to undo, but maybe it can start a little bit now.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

I think China did a great job of holding the games under such difficult circumstances and should be commended for its efforts. My only fear is now that it is over and the spotlight is off them the CCP will return to bullying its neighbors and persecuting dissidents / minorities with increased nationalistic fervor. I hope the games weren't just an exercise in propaganda for China

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Olympics? I thought this was more X games.

Boycotted every single minute. Don't feel like I've missed anything at all, other than supporting a disgustingly authoritarian regime patting itself on the back as "host". The coverage (headlines) I've seen have been rather ho-hum as well, so no regrets so far!

Instead of sitting on the couch, wasting a life vicariously watching others live theirs, I went out and played some sport with friends. It was fun! No medals, no records...but no cruel Covid Bubble, fake snow or supportting a soul-crushing regime like China, either. So again, don't feel like I missed anything that matched in excitement what I actually did in my own life. Not bad!

But I heard that some Russian athlete was caught with drugs in her system...and they let her compete for a medal anyway? That's...pathetic.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

I agree with Hito Bito

xi is probably plotting with Putin as we speak.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Now that it's over, we can now forget about what happened in Wuhan in 2019 and go about our daily lives.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

@Addfwyn

Japan did it first with Tokyo Olympics 2020 game under the pandemic, and China learned a lot of experiences from it.

That's why there are a lot of similarities between them.

Congratulations to both countries!

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

I honor the athletes only. Thank you for years of practice and putting on a great athletic event.

Beijing's Olympics close, ending safe but odd global moment

I'm not sure if the games were "safe," and I can cite 3 examples, for openers.

The number of infected athletes.

A case of food poisoning.

A case where an athlete's body part was frozen during a ski event.

And, would the writer consider safe, the number of doping cases with the cheating of allowing a banned team to compete. Pretty odd in my opinion.

Yes, you can say there were some "odd global moments." I will give the writer that much credit.

One Family - Man, the blatant hypocrisy.

Eileen Gu and Su Yiming were some of the sporting highlights.

Ah, Eileen Guh. That would be the one who quickly got Chinese citizenship in spite of China having a one-nationality law? And the one that invited her Chinese fans to follow her on Twitter, not realizing that Twitter is blocked in CCP China? And then, when having that pointed out, bragged about how easy it is to get a VPN.... not realizing that Chinese people go to jail for that (not her of course)?

Yep, enough weirdness for all around. I also loved the dystopian background for the ski jump. First Olympic event in anbandoned steel mill.....

Meanwhile, any bets on the health of Peng Shuah? Bach thinks she is A OK...

Ive been off work for a few weeks now, and I watched the games which ive never done before, I really enjoyed it, i watched most days to see if England might win a blinking medal, and they won a gold medal on the last day! ( silver the previous day) I do feel that this new article was a bit bias in the way it was written, I do feel sorry for the competitors that crashed out in spectacular manor, but that is part of competative sports, youl have winners and youl have losers, there was highs and there was lows, all followed by tiers of joy and sadness, I hope that it has inspired lots of adults and children to take up a sport after watching the games.

The japanese ladies curling team were beaten into second place by the English ladies curling team quite convincingly, but the Japanese ladies were full of good spirit and showed that they were gallant losers, so well done to them.

WilliB:

One you've dealt with Osaka Naomi, then we'll talk.

Plenty of other American athletes who have gone on to represent other countries. How many have been called traitors and received abuse since the age of 15?

Everyone in the know in China uses VPN. You're a bit behind the times. Have you only just discovered that?

Meanwhile, any bets on the health of Peng Shuah? Bach thinks she is A OK...

Peng Shuah (sic) is fine, sipping champagne and enjoying herself.

Brian:

England doesn't participate in the Olympics.

Chico3:

I hope you're not blaming China for his frozen penis.

Japan and the US do allow double nationality.

Everyone in the know in China uses VPN.

A lot of people do. It is still completely illegal, Which is why people do not brag about it, and her Weibo post was quickly removed.

Together with her CCP guards? Why do you think she only appears with one of these goons nearby, and has now announced her retirement.

There may be a price for this. After the Tokyo Olympics last year, CoVid cases rose up in Japan. And it's still not over yet. And everyone crowding airports this week isn't going to make it better.
