This is unsurprising. China uses as much coal as the rest of the world combined.

"The Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games coincide with the end of winter and the start of spring in northern China, when weather conditions are extremely unfavorable," China's environment ministry spokesman Liu Youbin said at a press conference Monday.

This is not something unforeseeable that just now surfaced, which makes very difficult to understand how the games were approved to be held in China.

It's not difficult at all: corruption.

There's one way to lower the air pollution in China. Make other countries manufacture their own goods instead of making China the world's factory. But then you're going to up the pollution in your own country as well as pay more for your goods. Can't have your cake and eat it. So, I guess we'll just continue to bash China and keep paying less for goods.

another negative news...i wait another 3 to come in your average.

All the poor people who live on the outskirts of urban areas burn coal stoves to keep warm in the winter. You can bet Beijing will order them to freeze for a couple weeks during the Olympics and forbid the use of coal. All for Xi's image.

Atrocious. How can anyone survive in that? I would've thought clearing up that mess would've taken precedence over harassing its regional neighbors and extorting poor countries.

Think you mean ‘website’ as “app”s only function on certain platforms & devices while websites are accessible to all @zichi 1:40pm. - Back on-topic, the ‘website’ you provided depicts Saitama and Hokkaido as more “unhealthy for sensitive groups” than Beijing, … today. - Thanks for the link:

@zichi 1:40 pm: “Check out this app for looking at air quality.”

iPhones and IOS 15 have the “Weather” app and/or widget that provide continually updated AQI data. According to Apple:

“Air quality information is provided by BreezoMeter for Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, UK, and U.S. Air quality information for China mainland is provided by QWeather and reflects data from air monitoring stations.” -

If you think this is bad, you should see Indian cities. But India isn't enemy number one, so we don't need to talk about that,

I wasn't aware that India was also holding an Olympics this year. Oh, they're not? Then, maybe that's why it wasn't mentioned in an article about air quality at the Olympics.

No kidding……it’s china.

When’s the actual last time they had clean air?

To the athletes: Breathe deep the gathering gloom. Then get a lung transplant.

When did I say India was holding the Olympics? Stop putting words in my mouth. All I meant is that, despite the amount of anti-Chinese articles non-stop, you could do a lot worse than Beijing in terms of air pollution.

Remember when we talked about the sewage water quality back in 2016 Rio Olympics

This is like that

Air pollution in India was relevant when they had the delta strain boom. Apparently polluted air increases respiratory aerosol exhalation at least 10 times

Warns, that's daily!! Doesn't surprise me at all!

Definitely something China needs to get under control. I understand why it is the way it is, it was a necessary result of industrializing so quickly, but if they want to be the global leader they absolutely need better environmental policies.

I do think they'll get there, but maybe holding major international sporting events in the interim is not the best way to do that.

Quite a way to welcome these foreign athletes. Under these conditions none of the players, not even the Chinese will be competing at their best.

And with this omicron raging, we shouldn't be having this at all.

If the CCP really gave a damn about anything, they'd call this whole deal off. It ain't even gonna benefit them in the long run.
