One of the first great major league pitchers I learned about when growing up. A tremendous talent.

RIP.
A great life....well lived.

Not many people are directly responsible for such a major change in a professional sport, like lowering the mound height. It would be equivalent to changing the size of football (soccer) goals after Ronaldo scored so many in his career.
It's a shame that he played prior to the free-agency era. He and the players of their contract-slavery era were never compensated the way they should have been for their incredible accomplishments.

"He also starred in basketball at Creighton and spent a year with the Harlem Globetrotters before totally turning his attention to the diamond."
Totally turning [sic]? Who wrote this rubbish screed?

RIP. We love you.

My dad was a huge baseball fan and saw many of the greats, but this was the only guy he would talk about.

The best pitcher in baseball history- bar none. The most feared; he disliked being an all star as he was teamed with people he “hated” (not literally) but he prepared for games by visualizing the opponent as an enemy
The guy had a 1.12 ERA in 1968 and among the great hitters of his era Gibson was unaminously chosen as the pitcher no one wanted to face

Then those racist zeros weren't his 'fans', were they?
Hero.

RIP. We are losing legends all over the place.
