go Canadia....

Yes, indeed, ole Crosby had to make up for flubbing that breakaway near the end of the 3rd. Looking at the playback slo-mo reels reveal both Crosby and Miller were equally surprised the winning goal went in in that mad OT scramble, but such are the fortunes of hockey. Anyway, well played by the US, it was anybody's game to win or lose.

Awesome victory!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah baby!!! GOLD for Team Canada!!! GOLD Canada GOLD (^o^)/

0 ( +0 / -0 )

gotta love it! Glad I was able to find a site to watch this!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Awesome, can't wait to see how many folks don't make it into work tomorrow owing to massive hangovers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congrats Canada!! A real heart-wreching victory.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That will be me, UnagiDon

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congrats to Canada! An awesome gold to cap off the most gold medals won by any country in Winter Olympic history.

Oh, and I also expect a lot of sour grapes over this one, much like CapnSinbad's.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Awesome Olympics - all the athletes were fantastic to watch. And, I loved watching the crowds across Canada enjoying these games as never before!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Up at 4:45 to shower, walk my dogs and make a quick breaky... Thank you BS1 for showing the game... Sorry to my doggies for making them think I was yelling at them from time to time during the game!! :D Yeah Canada! Woo Hoo!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

smithinjapan -- even as a Yank, I agree with your post. Great game and Canada is a worthy champion. No sour grapes on my part. The U.S. team is young, and vastly exceeded pre-tournament expectations. Also, Canada's gold-medal haul is very impressive, as was The U.S.'s total medal count. All-in-all, I very enjoyable game and games.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Cheers jianadaren!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, I'm bitter!!

I can't stand Canada and I can't stand Canadians!!

Canada won and they can go to hell!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

To quote Branded sometime last week after the fluke US victory;

Personally I have no qualms about an all North American final- like in the women's tournement- Go USA !

How sweet it is! Any qualms now, my friend??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Here's my excuse!!

Without American fans, NHL would fold since NHL can't survive on Canadian fans alone.

Now Canada can go to hell!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

MadokaKato! Thats not very sporting of you!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, it was a bit much to ask to beat Canada twice on their own soil...still silver is very good considering the level of competition..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wouldn't this make a better picture of the day?????

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LostinNagoya, he is already doing those things, except that he is that drunk salariman fighting with himself on PS3, alone in his mother's house

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Big thanks Team Canada for the 14th. GOLD Medal!!! going now to join the mayhem in downtown Vancouver:)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm speechless, what an incredible hockey game.

Enjoy the case of Yuengling, Obama! :-p

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is a great day for Canada and their hometown goalie, Luongo, #1 guy, who plays for Canucks. Congradulations to Crosby, Marleau, Thorton, Healy, Boyle and rest of the team. I've been to Vancouver four times last year and this is a great city with nice people.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great game. Both teams deserved it. Took an overtime to finally beat a US team nobody even expected to do anything. Congrats Canada! This is like the US winning Olympic basketball.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

HumbledCat,

Actually, Obama has to buy Canadian PM Stephen Harper a case of Molson Canadian beer. (Yuengling is Pennsylvanian beer.)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Molson?? I could go for that...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Lucky you, designboy! Have a great time, and a beer for me!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At least, buy Sleeman~ Molson is owned by Coors

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yay! Party on Canada!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Jeez guys, get it right. Obama has to buy the Yuenling for Harper. Had the impossible happened, Obama would have recieved a case of Molson Canadian.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

oops, I stand corrected. Obama has to buy Molson. Makes sense. On top of being the best sporting nation on earth, (quite frankly I would be happy to stop at hockey) we also produce the best beer! Why drink watery American beer when u can have a Canadian!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is like the US winning Olympic basketball.

Nah, they don't have to work as hard and it is expected in the US. Glad they made it this far and Canada worked hard to get their gold. Good job on them.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

in the spirit of sport and friendship to the world, we won the most gold, record win of the most medals from a host country, kicked Americans in the rubber match, and about to force Obama to drink Molsons. Really, it's been a good day.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@jianadaren,

Sleemans is owned by Sapporo!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Madokakato - "Without American fans, NHL would fold since NHL can't survive on Canadian fans alone."

You couldn't be more wrong. Canadian teams make up for 20% of the teams but bring in 40% of the revenue. Canada would do quite fine if the NHL only played in Canada and only had Canadian fans.

And the league would be much better off if the American Gary Bettman were not the Commissioner.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great Job Canada!! If I ever run into any one of you, the first 3 beers are on me!! I am one American/Yank who is not bitter. NowI can go back to rooting for Toews and my Blackhawks!! :-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Samuraisteve, In the last summer Olympics Britain on more medals than all the countries you mentioned.

Well done Canada, don`t kno why some Americans are so bitter.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

neighbours setting off fireworks.. this is a party that is not going to end for a while...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well done! Our (Pittsburgh Penguins!) Sidney Crosby had the game winning goal!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

CANADA CANADA CANADA!!!.. Let's all celebrate and not hate!..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't be bitter. What a game. Worthy of Olympic. Worthy of a friendship and a games where we are at our best. Take a graceful end, and show the calibre of sportsmanship in joy, regret, and a moment of endeavour, but never bitterness my friend.

From another article pre-game....

MrUSA at 03:46 PM JST - 27th February

wow are Canada and USA different countries?

They sure are. Canada is the red team that will win silver, and USA is the blue team that will win gold. Finally the championship will be coming back to America, the home of hockey.

RomeoRamenII at 08:34 PM JST - 27th February

Canada to face U.S. for gold in men's ice hockey

Translation: It's U.S. vs. U.S., Jr.

MadokaKato at 11:12 PM JST - 27th February

I hope Canada lose in their own national sport in their own territory

Hee hee...want to rephrase that folks???

Seriously though, it was one heluva game! Both teams were amazing and many people have much shorter fingernails (if any) today because of it. The U.S. and Canada were well matched, but we had Crosby and that sealed it up for us in the end.

I think the U.S. should be bloody proud of their silver medal!! They were worthy adversaries and made us work HARD for that gold.

Well, except for one player who doesn't deserve his silver medal.

"It is devastating," said US defenceman Jack Johnson. "We were one goal shy of a gold medal. It is the biggest game any of us have ever played in. Nothing we did before compares to this. You lose the silver you don't win it."

He is an Olympic medalist. Not exactly something to sneeze at. Cripes. You don't like it, give it back.

Great game, guys!!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well done to all Canadians! You guys had your knockers - in particular, the BBC and British press were savage (they were possibly trying to take away the spotlight on their team of 54(!) under-achievers LOL) - but you all stood up and truly OWNED that PODIUM! You guys have shocked the entire world and made history - 14 Golds - everyone said it couldn't be done!

And look, as for the criticism, I can't think of any other nation that has hosted an Olympics and not tried to whip up a bit of a patriotic frenzy. It just seems that canadians - and their sportsmen/women were able to respond to the immense pressure better than other nations in the past. (Of course, us Aussies did a similar thing in 2000 Summer Games, 16 Golds....just had to get that in!)

WELL DONE CANADA - BEST (WINTER) GAMES EVER. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THEM!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What an awesome game! Little too exciting for this guy that early in the morning! The US team certainly did well, better than many thought so can surely head home with heads high!

May there be many more games like that in the future as well!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That was an awesome game, totally worth getting up at 5am and having a crappy Monday to watch it. Definately can't talk smack about the American players either, they really worked hard and made that an exciting game, but very happy to see the gold where it belongs.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, good hockey game, but best winter games ever? I think not. There were all sorts of mistakes and moments where one had to say "oops." The luge accident, the openning ceremony, the zamboni problem, the many ski crashes, not starting the music from the beginning during the women's figure skating competition ...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Woohoo! Well done Canada and USA! Both teams should be really proud. Sounded like a really great game. I wish I could have seen it, but I only have the free channels...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Twas a good game. Even had Canada on the edge of their seats.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm glad the American goalie got the tournament MVP. Truly deserved it. I wouldn't talk smack about the U.S. team but there are definitely a few on this board who deserve an earful. Yeah you Mr.USA, and my personal favourite Branded, who I guessed correctly wouldn't show up on the board today.

Overall it was an amazing game and the American team, as heartbreaking as it is, should not feel at all discouraged about their accomplishments.

Here's to another exciting and eventful hockey tournament in 2014 in Russia!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wouldn't talk smack about the U.S. team but there are definitely a few on this board who deserve an earful. Yeah you Mr.USA

What did I do?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Too bad for the US. Was a better team, and should have won.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

YAY CANADA!!

Madoka: As my wise Canadian mom always told me: If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Darn good game ! Congrats Canada BUT Team USA in 2014!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Although the final overall score was USA-7, Canada-6 hahahhahhahhahaaha U betcha baby!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The better TEAM won. Irrespective of individual talent there is no denying that team Canada moved and controlled the puck better than any other team. In fact, I haven't seen that kind of puck handling and control since the Soviets back in the 70's...or the famous Canada Cup '87 series. Team USA has spectacular talent but they had to rely heavily on their speed and youth for dump, chase and dig style hockey. Give them a few years to mature and you'll see more cohesive, settled tic-tac-toe passing. Four years from now they are going to be huge.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am glad for Canadians, but for 99% of the world this is a no-news.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Good comment BP, BUT Hopefully Team USA will maintain the run and gun shoot that puck knock ther teeth out style of play, what hockey does not need is Euro style futbol nonsense

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Although the final overall score was USA-7, Canada-6 hahahhahhahhahaaha U betcha baby!

Midnightpromise - Canada-1 gold medal, USA-1 silver medal hahahahaha! seriously, I don't get how some of you Americans refuse to acknowledge you've lost.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Agreed with BPoint. USA will be a dominant force in 2014. Just look at the Chicago Blackhawks right now - an amazing group of young talented players who will bring them the Stanley Cup in due time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Larguero...Russia, Canada, America, scandinavia, is certainly more than 1%. wink,,

Midnight..I agree. North American style hockey is the norm these days. Run and gun is still the essence of our game.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Add....Canada just did with a bit of grace.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congratulations Canada for a well-played game. Also congrats to the U.S. for providing some great action. Although it was an exciting game to watch and it was a good game, it kind of didn't seem any different than watching an good NHL game. Yes, each were playing for their country, but it lacked the drama that the 1980 "miracle on ice" had where the U.S team made of amateur and collegiate players took on the heavily favored Soviet Union team. Oh, how I long for the good ole days. By the same token, I guess watching basketball in the Summer Games is like watching a typical NBA game.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ah, missed this one. Must've been a really close game.

Congratulations, Canada!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It must have been hard if you were both an American and a Pittsburgh Penquins fan, trying to root for Crosby to lose. Or maybe a Candian and Canucks fan rooting for Ryan Kesler to lose. LOL

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hotbox08....Those days are all but gone. There will never be another miracle on ice. It was a fluke...a wonder fluke. Also, we will never see anything like the '72 Summit Series where team Canada got lucky to beat the Red Army. That drama was rare and magical....once in a lifetime. You (and I) should just accept it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BPoint: True, it was a fluke albeit a very thrilling one. Sorry to say, I was a little to young to experience the '72 Summit Series you mention, but I'm sure it must have been great as well. Bet the Soviets were as stunned as they were in the 1980 game. Those were the days of the old "Jason Voorhees" type of goalie mask.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

MadokaKato: "So are you going to beat me up roomtemperature?"

You're doing a fine enough job of beating yourself up, my friend, and it's amusing to watch. The funniest part in watching you is how good a name you're giving Canadians through your inane attempts to trash them. We're all getting a good kick out of watching you make a fool of yourself.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I do not often agree with you, Smith. But this time I'm completely on your side. Anyway, well done Canada! The US can give it another try in Russia, because that young team will be 4 years older, more experienced and smarter by then.

Besides, on certain parts I have to agree with northlondon. The Canadians only allowed their own speed skaters to practice on the Oval Rink for the world cup last year. After many protests they gave in. But it's not really fair and far from good sportsmanship.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I have to agree that Canadian fans alone cannot support the NFL. Canadians are simply not fat enough as Americans to eat the necessary amount of hotdogs to produce such profits.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

sf2k, I knew that ;-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

roomtemperature: "The US can give it another try in Russia, because that young team will be 4 years older, more experienced and smarter by then."

And with it being on Russian soil next time around you can bet they're going to do their best to field a good team, too. That means it's going to be fun!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't know what the big deal is here. Canadian guy going in on the rush, flying through the air and having the puck bounce into the corner to the goalie's right, then having his teammate win the puck along the boards, and pass it back out to him. Then having the defenders all go MIA and on some kind of walkabout, and the guy shooting the puck in the net, all of that is very old hat. Been there, done that, long ago.

The big deal to me is that it looked much the same as 38 years ago. Could see the goal going in before long before it did. That is a brain trick I know, and I didn't really know, but nice to know my brain still works the same as it did 38 years ago.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't know what the big deal is here.

The big deal is that a fine bunch of NHLers won against another fine bunch of NHLers. It was the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby vs. the Vancouver Canucks' Ryan Kesler; both of which scored goals in this game. Having these Olympics gave a lot of other NHL players some much needed time off.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought Team USA had already beaten the Canadians once -so I'm unsure what this game is really about. -However those Canadian skaters/fans seem really happy.

NHL restarts tonight it seems, but last night was "National Hockey Night"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Fine NHLers all around. It was a good game. But it's over and the olympics are too. Now it's just a wait to see who get's the Wheaties cover. But then I don't eat Wheaties so, now that it's over, none of it matters. If your real life sucks so bad that you are this wrapped up in who won the most medals or whatever I think you should make some changes!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am satisfied.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LoveUSA - me too. I've been feeling that aftersex glow on a continuous basis since 8am this morning. It should last at least another 4 years..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great game, of course I was pulling for team USA but the Canadians deserved to win their "national" sport. Thanks Canada for a great winter olympics. As an aside a friend of mine was in Whistler for the first week of competition and had nothing but nice things to say about the people of BC.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

When a gold medal winner runs through the downtown of Whistler and grabs a pitcher of beer on the way, you know we had fun. Any word on what beer it was?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's a pity that hockey, like rugby and baseball, is so local.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Canada deserves much praise for winning 14 gold medals.

The U.S. deserves a big pat on the back with its 37 overall medals.

Congratulations to both countries on a great hockey game to finish off a successful Winter Olympics.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Damn fine game. I love my hockey no matter what country is playing. That said, I was really rooting for the U.S team. Great build up in the third period. The U.S team was young and played hard. Good game Canada.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The big deal comment was a joke Hotbox. Harper was right when he claimed that no other country had such a strong connection between a sport and national identity. Sounds corny to outsiders I know, and you could argue that soccer is the same in England or Brazil or Germany, but the connection is not unique to each country. We will of course get to test the theory this summer when England wins the World Cup (assuming John Terry can stay out of his teammates' girlfriends' beds so they don't quit the team because they refuse to play with him).

So I am happy for all the kids who will always remember where they were and who they were with when the goal went in, same as my generation does. And when the next generation comes along and is tired of hearing about the long ago Crosby goal in 2010, I hope they get their goal too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ice Hockey is only popular in North America and Europe.

Not actually an Asian sport.

Japan tried to establish a professional Ice Hockey League, but that failed.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thanks for the insight arjon...the league is still going though.

Still feel like I am dreaming here today! What a game. Defending olympic hockey champs....like the sounds of that for the next 4 years.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Having pros play in the Olympics worked this time since it was held in Vancouver. However, I worry about Sochi in 2014. How will the travel time and amount of minutes played affect NHLers coming back to play an NHL game the very next day? Even now, teams vying for a playoff spot will be questioning themselves if they should play those Olympic stars right away, or have them slowly get back into the rigors of an NHL playoff push.

Between now and then, something will have to be worked out between the Olympic Committee and the NHL. Will the NHL have to shorten the season even more to take into account the two weeks of playing time the Olympics demands? Should they shift the NHL season? Of course fans may not mind since they still get to see their stars in the Olympics play (or maybe they do care since they are the ones paying season tickets for games).

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sid the Kid(Penguins) and Ryan Miller(Sabers) will face again pretty soon in Buffalo when NHL regular season resumes today. Miller will sit out for extra rest, I guess.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sid the Kid(Penguins) and Ryan Miller(Sabers) will face again pretty soon in Buffalo when NHL regular season resumes today

Whoops, I meant Pittsburgh.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well at least Olympic hockey is competitive since NHL players are allowed to compete in the Olympics.

If it was still the old way, and the Cold War still existed. It would be Soviet dominance, and that's no fun. Not even the Soviet players seemed excited whenever they score a goal.

I doubt you will see US-Canada gold medal match in Soichi, because they usually underachieve outside of North America. It's probably be more like Russia-Czech or Sweden in the gold medal match for 2014. It seems to be that way.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Too bad for the US. Was a better team, and should have won"

Nope- they were faster, and were determined on the forecheck, and played the way they wanted to to win, but they couldn't match the Canadian's skill-set (their coach and manager even admitted this), who shrugged off their hits and made the plays up ice. The Canadians outshot the Americans in both games and although the Americans played much better in the second game, it was fairly clear they weren't on the same level as the Canadians. But, as a avid Canadian hockey player and fan for almost 40 years I salute the American's effort. I, for one, was not surprised that the Yanks went as far as they did; so many people making predictions failed to take a team with Miller- the best goalie in the world, seriously, which is a mistake at a short 1 and done tournament like the Olympics.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A little late, but just wanted to give a big "Hell yeah!!!" to the boys in red and white. I got up at 5 to watch the game, and had to get to work by 8:30, so I was dreading the game going to overtime because of time constraints, and was dreading a penalty shootout even more, because there would have been no way I could've watched it and made it to work on time. Thank goodness for Sidney Crosby for not only winning it for Canada, but also for allowing me to get out the door just in the nick of time.

And congrats to the U.S. as well for a hard-fought game and tournament. Your speed was scary, and Patrick Kane had me sweating bullets every time he touched the puck. What a great game, and what a great tournament overall for hockey!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Once again, time for cooler heads to prevail. Congratulations to the US mens Hockey team for an outstanding Olympic performance ! This team full of kids was an outside shot at a medal coming into the tournement ranked #5. They not only beat Canada in the prelims, but also outscored the Canadian team 7-6 overall and forced the gold medal game into OT- all this on hostile turf ! What an excellent performance and one all Americans can be proud of ! I like their chances in Sochi Russia where they should once again make it to the medal round- hopefully once again against Canada- on nuetral ground- should be fun !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded;

Where ya been, buddy? We've missed you!

So when will these "cooler heads" you mention show up and prevail? Certainly not in your comment, which lacked even a single note of congratulations to the worlds greatest hockey nation and undisputed kicker of American butt, aka Canada.

It's not like you have to agree that the beaver rolled all over the supine eagle and had its way, true though that may be, but is it really too much to ask for a sportsman-like thanks to your mighty neighbour to the north?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded! Good to see you, buddy! How about that amazing Canadian team completely dominating the flustered US? It was providence that Canada would win, but it was kinda cute that the Americans kept plugging away even in overtime. Still, I felt just a little bad for the absolutely shattered losers. By the way Branded, you mentioned early last week that you were very confident of an all-North American final for both men's and women's hockey. Any comment?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And Branded, I agree with UnagiDon that after all your chirping last week, that some congratulations to the Gold Medal winning team are in order. Having won a RECORD 14 gold medals, Canada certainly did OWN THE PODIUM!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Horsefella- I'm confused, could you clarify just a bit;

"How about that amazing Canadian team completely dominating the flustered US?"

"Completely dominating" you say ? Well then, how do you explain this ?

"the Americans kept plugging away even in overtime."

What ? "Overtime" you say ??? You mean that young group of American kids- the ones ranked #5 coming into the tourney- worked the home squad into an overtime game in the gold medal final ? Surely you jest ! Too bad Miller failed, for such a brief second, to complete one of hockey's most basic plays- "cover yer near" ! Crosby got lucky. Still, over the two games the US outscored Canada 7-6 ! I love that.

Oh and Horsefella-

"By the way Branded, you mentioned early last week that you were very confident of an all-North American final for both men's and women's hockey. Any comment?"

Ummm- I was dead on ! Congrats to me ?

Finally-

"Canada certainly did OWN THE PODIUM!!"

Really ? I thought the Canadian delegation conceded the podium to the USA 5 days before the closing ceremonies- should I bring up the quote for you ? USA-USA-USA ! New Olympic record for medals won- thanks mostly to the silver in Hockey ! Imagine- they were placed as the fifth seed coming in too !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow, sour grapes don't again begin to describe that. More like a complete and utter denial of reality...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ice Hockey is one of the few sport Canada can be proud of.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - you were dead "on"? Or did u mean to write "dead wrong"? Canadian Hockey medals; 2 GOLD, American Hockey medals; 0 GOLD! Also, I've been playing and watching hockey since I was 6 years old, yet have never heard the adage; "Cover yer near". What's that mean? HoooBoy! It's gonna be a looooong 4 years for you, buddy!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded- Looks like you've bought NBC's propagand... err, I mean promotion of the U.S. hockey team as being the plucky underdog pups who nobody thought had a chance- Americans love that crap. In truth, your "bunch of kids" weren't the only youngsters out there- Canada's Drew Doughty is younger than anyone on the American team and he's a defenceman (not a postion you want to risk youth at). In fact, Canada's Johnathon Toews (8 points and a plus9 in 7 games!) is the same age as your young superstar- Patrick Kane (but without the felony record).

But let's get away from numbers- did you actually watch the 2 games!?! If you did, and you know hockey at all, you wouldn't be blowing your horn about the U.S.A. outscoring Canada 7-6 (petty empty-netter). Brian Burke and Ron Wilson admitted that Canada dominated the first game and in the Gold medal game America took it to the Canadians and used their speed but Canada still controlled the flow (we outshot you in both).

And enough with the "ranked 5th in the world" nonsense- Russia is ranked #1 and look at that mess! In truth, world rankings mean very little in the Olympics (Slovakia!). Jaromir Jagr had a good quote before the tournament that went something like- "If we played Canada 10 times, I don't think we can beat them even 3 times, but if we play them once I think we can beat them once".

Very American of you to attempt to spin Canada's win into a triumph of the underdog/victory in loss thing that's all about you guys.

I congratulated the U.S. on playing above their heads and bringing it in the final. Folks like you make me regret I had. Stay classy America!

B.T.W. If you want to harp on about how the U.S. was the better team than Canada then you should hit YouTube and watch this year's World Juniors- where, as a Canadian I'm not too proud to admit that the U.S. kids did kick our butts and deserved the victory they got!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unagidon; "Wow, sour grapes don't again begin to describe that."

Folks please, if you are going to bust out fairy tales and decades old adages, at least know how to use them. "Sour grapes" is a term used when someone is unable to attain or "reach" something that they want- and since they can't, well those grapes must be sour anyway. For me ? Nothing further from the truth. As a typical American I have been raised to believe in a couple of realities- the first is "you can't win them all". The second, finishing in the top three is a great accomplishment. Explains why you won't hear the US team talking trash about "winning" the Silver- leave that for the prima dona figure skaters like Asada or Plushenko ! Nothing wrong with acknowledging one of the biggest stories at these Olympics- and no it wasn't team Canada's run at the Gold- they were the top ranked team coming in. The US on the other hand- what a surprise ! Great team effort and some serious skill on display for the tournements youngest team- I like their chances in Sochi.

Horsefella seems to have gold fever- "Canadian Hockey medals; 2 GOLD, American Hockey medals;"

2 wonderful Silvers ! No pouting here !

"have never heard the adage; "Cover yer near". What's that mean?"

Common phrase that every goalie understands 100%- Cover your near post ! Hug the pipe !

"HoooBoy! It's gonna be a looooong 4 years for you, buddy!"

ha- hardly Buddy ! We got NBA playoffs, The Final Four, The Masters, The WC soccer tournement, ML baseball, and of course the NFL ! See why Americans have no time for this "Own the podium" BS ? The Olympics is just another opportunity for US athletes to showcase their talents in the international arena. Putting all your eggs into one hockey basket seems shallow to this sports fan.

mokgohan- steps up to the plate;

"your "bunch of kids" weren't the only youngsters out there- "

Didn't say that. I said team USA was one of the youngest- and that is a fact. Strike one !

"If you did, and you know hockey at all, you wouldn't be blowing your horn about the U.S.A. outscoring Canada 7-6 (petty empty-netter)."

That empty netter came from an American player outhuslting the opponent to literally dive and slap the puck in- demonstrating how lazy and non-challant Canada had become. Strike two.

"America took it to the Canadians and used their speed but Canada still controlled the flow (we outshot you in both)."

"WE" ? You were on the ice ? "You" actually played for team Canada ? Nah, I didn't think so- Strike three ! Grab some bench !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congratulations to Canada.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

4 looooong years, Branded! How sweet it is!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

CANADA GOOOOOOOLLLLLLLDDDDDD! Great effort from both sides. I was on the edge of my seat the whole game.Gotta give credit to the Americans though. You guys gave us a run for our money! All in all, it was an awesome game! And to think, all of this excitement happened in my own hometown!!

On another tip, Canada may not have owned the 'whole' podium but we certainly owned the top of the podium! http://winterolympics.external.bbc.co.uk/medals/2010-standings/index.html

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Uhhm...Branded. If I may, your forgot strike 4 that will nullify your sour 3 strikes.........GOLD FOR CANADA!!! And indeed..........for 4 loooooooooong years!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, Canada won their gold at the only sport they are good at.

Yeah Canada

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congrats to Canada! I'm a Canadian hanging out in East Africa and I'm really impressed with the country's Olympic performance in Vancouver. However, I do feel that we should diversify our sporting options a bit. Why can't we compete with the Americans in basketball and football? I know we pride scholastic academics a lot higher than our American counterparts. But we really need to move to the next level. Ditto for soccer.

I'm from Ottawa and it's amazing the hockey network we have in Ontario: midget, peewee, Juniors, high school, etc. Why can't we do the same for basketball?? Physically, we're the same size as Americans. I don't get it. Thank goodness for Steve Nash though. But he played College ball in the US. Why don't we have great college sports??

Just my 2 cents.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sorry arjon, but you leave me no other choise.

"Yeah, Canada won their gold at the only sport they are good at."

Probably you "forgot" that Canada won 13 more gold medals in other disciplines.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well done Canadian people! US needs to learns lessons in hockey.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - "Cover yer near"???? What are you on about? The puck went five-hole.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well done Canadian people! US needs to learns lessons in hockey.

Not really, the Americans played a darn good tournament. They got some excellent young talent and experienced coaches/managers. They will be force to be reckon with in Sochi. I say Congrats to the Americans on a job well done.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

xpompey8 - "USA will be a dominant force in 2014. Just look at the Chicago Blackhawks right now - an amazing group of young talented players who will bring them the Stanley Cup in due time."

What do the Blackhawks have to do with anything? They're a great team, but they have about two American players on the entire team, and only one of them was on the Team USA roster. Patrick Kane is great, but Team Canada had 3 members of the Blackhawks (Toews, Seabrook and Keith) on their team.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

xpompey8 seems to know his stuff;

"the Americans played a darn good tournament. They got some excellent young talent and experienced coaches/managers. They will be force to be reckon with in Sochi. I say Congrats to the Americans on a job well done."

And so did those in attendance who voted on the games "All Star" and "MVP" awards- which is sorely missing from this article. THere were 10 awards open- and the US team took 6 ! Yep, including a second place finish in a tournement they came in ranked out of the medals- they took 60% of the awards- and the Silver ! So if I may,

Media All-Star Team:

G – Ryan Miller (USA)

D – Brian Rafalski (USA)

D – Shea Weber (CAN)

F – Jonathan Toews (CAN)

F – Zach Parise (USA)

F – Pavol Demitra (SVK)

MVP – Ryan Miller (USA)

The Directorate Awards were also announced:

Best Goalie: Ryan Miller (USA)

Best Defenceman: Brian Rafalski (USA)

Best Forward: Jonathan Toews (CAN)

Again, too bad Miller, the tourney MVP, was caught out of position- not hugging the pipe with his stick on the ice- to prevent the "5 hole" Kreza23- this could have very easily been a US victory. But hey, second place is a great accomplishment. And the World Championships are just 64 days away in Germany! Lets see how Canada does away from it's home ice. They'll have to play much better than they did in the Olympics if they want to take the "World Championship" away from the Russians.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

hee hee, this is fun! Gold medal - CANADA! losing team - USA oh, 4 loooooog years, baby!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - I'm no goalie, but you're supposed to hug the post when the puck is behind or at the side of your net. Miller was positioned well for that goal, he was square to the shooter and was covering a lot of net. Crosby just shot it sooner than he expected and he wasn't completely set.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

By the way, Branded, did it occur to you that the reason why Miller got the MVP was because his team was so badly outshot by the vastly superior Canadians? I guess you also knew that it was Rafalski who got absolutelty undressed by Crosby on the GOLD MEDAL WINNING GOAL!! 4 looooong years, baby!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Canada won an Olympic gold in Ice Hockey! Yeah Canada!

Without American fans, NHL will declare for bankruptcy and Canadian players would play in Europe professionally.

Lucky that Canadians have American NHL fans

0 ( +0 / -0 )

kreza23- "Branded - I'm no goalie"

Obviously not !

"Miller was positioned well for that goal"

Yes, if you're a Canadian fan !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BTW Horsefella- just exactly how long is a "log" year ? Look at you two- just falling all over yourselves. Can't wait for Germany ! 64 days and counting.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh dear, dear. Its gonna be a loooong 4 years for a couple of sour-pusses on this thread! 14 Gold medals!! An Olympic record!! I'm soooo proud of my country!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded- Canadians, too are looking forward to the World Championships. Despite not having our best players available, we've still won it 3 times in the past 7 years (including 3 silvers - but hey, only the US cares about 2nd place). The US? not. one. single. medal.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded- "You mean that young group of American kids" Also branded- "This team full of kids was an outside shot"

Me- your "bunch of kids" weren't the only youngsters out there- "

Branded- Didn't say that. I said team USA was one of the youngest- and that is a fact. Strike one !

Yeah, I was waaaaaaaaaay off base on that one. (Richards strips your MVP Rafalski of the puck and Toews puts in the rebound. 1-0)

Branded- That empty netter came from an American player outhuslting the opponent to literally dive and slap the puck in- demonstrating how lazy and non-challant Canada had become. Strike two.

... yet they still outshot the U.S. by a wide margin. If we were lazy, what were they? (Perry left wide open and alone in front puts it by Miller. 2-0)

Branded- WE" ? You were on the ice ? "You" actually played for team Canada ? Nah, I didn't think so- Strike three ! Grab some bench !

...see, this just seems childish. Also desperate and pathetic. I'd already admitted I was Canadian and expected you to understand the "we" as being Canada and the "you" as being the U.S. I guess I expected too much. Of course I didn't play in the frikin' game! Are you actually throwing pitches to me!!!

(Crosby is left all alone as MVP Rafalski goes M.I.A. from his defense position. Goal, game and gold for C A N A D A!)

Dude- you should stick to baseball. And don't forget to "cover your near" whatever the hell that means.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Horsefella- A true Canadian !

"4 loooooog years, baby!!"

Niiice !

On the World Championships-

"The US? not. one. single. medal."

Huh ? Try 16 my..."I'm soooo proud of my country!!" friend.

Is it my imagination or has this game brought out the true nature of the Canadian public ? Lets hope not.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And so did those in attendance who voted on the games "All Star" and "MVP" awards- which is sorely missing from this article. THere were 10 awards open- and the US team took 6 ! You may. And if I may: Canada... Olympic Gold Medalists

Is it my imagination or has this game brought out the true nature of the Canadian public?

It is your imagination.

Yep, including a second place finish in a tournement

Or as was so eloquently displayed in Atlanta '96 the first loser.

Dude- you should stick to baseball

Actually judging by the U.S.' accomplishments in the WBC maybe not.

Keep clinging to these meaningless awards and accomplishments. We Canadians will hold on to the one that matters. But Branded good on ya for finally showing up on the board. Couldn't have been an easy decision.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How did this turn into a IIHF World Championships discussion? People outside of Europe actually give a crap about that tournament? For one thing, it plays second fiddle to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so you hardly see any great players because they are still in the playoffs or home resting. Most NHLers would rather go for the Cup then play in the World Championships, anyways.

Olympics, Canada/World Cup, and World Juniors are the tournaments that matter in hockey. It's best of the best hockey at its finest.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - Please, you've already said previously that you're a hockey newbie, and now you're claiming to know how a goalie is supposed to play? Miller had good position, he had his angles well covered, but Crosby just snuck it five-hole.

And these World Championships you speak of? Are you serious? This tournament goes on every year, and it's right in the middle of the playoffs, so only players from NHL teams that didn't make the playoffs, or have been eliminated early can participate. Nobody brags about winning that tournament.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - once again, you failed to read my statement correctly. In the last 7 years, the US has ZERO medals. Canada 6, including 3 Golds! In fact, going all the way back to 1997, the US has a paltry 1 bronze medal in the world championships. 1 BRONZE! OUCH! But really, who cares about the world championships when the big prize is an OLYMPIC GOLD, Baby!!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Nobody brags about winning that tournament."

But Branded does. He/She says the WBC baseball is not important, because America didn't win. Now he/she is bragging about the World Cup Hockey, because America didn't become Olympic champion. America got silver. In Olympics silver means losing!!! Well done Canada.......you totally deserved to win......THE GOLD MEDAL!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hockey is such a beautiful game and the victory is so sweet. Canadians should be proud! USA should not be disappointed. After 4 years they can try again, it is not such a long period, just be patient and train hard.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yabusama- "Keep clinging to these meaningless awards and accomplishments."

Odd, I haven't heard of one Canadian player willing to return any of the silver medals Canada won at the last two World Championships. Odd indeed !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Horsefella- "But really, who cares about the world championships..."

Canda obviously does ! The world Champion used to be decided at the Olympics, again "used to be". Now the tournement has it's own structure and format and the winner is termed "The Worlds Best". It is from this tourney that the Canada/Soviet/Russia rivalry blossomed and grew- make no mistake, it wasn't from the Olympics... Baby !!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Roomtemperature- "Nobody brags about winning that tournament." "But Branded does. He/She says the WBC baseball is not important, because America didn't win."

I, "Branded", have made no statement whatsoever. You have me confused with another poster. I'll cut you some slack this time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LoveUSA says it best-

"USA should not be disappointed."

I dare say they are not ! And that seems to rub the Canadians, that mill about here, the wrong way. Many of you, horsefella, kreza23,roomtemperature, etc seem to think Americans are in agony over "winning" the Silver. How funny is that ? Remember, hockey is barely a top 5 sport in the US- as soccer is now easily winning over Americas youth. Hockey is regional at best, not Amerixas game- that would be baseball for attendance and football for television viewing. Hockey is fun- but it's not the life and blood of the average American- no single sport is- that's what makes America great. We have so many sports to enjoy and our athletes remain within the top tiers in everyone of them ! Yes Canada enjoy your hockey- but don't disrespect those Americans who now turn their attention to the NBA, the Masters, The Final Four, Spring Training, the upcoming WC Soccer tournement ! Americans will just have to take their record haul of Olympic medals and be happy with that- I am.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It was a great game and Canada my hat is off, you deserve it. The USA should not feel bad as a silver is very good showing coming from a land where hockey ranks a distant fourth in terms of popularity. It was a great Olympics and I now have a very strong desire to go to BC to check things out.

I only hope that the NHL allows their players to take part in the next Olympics.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And that seems to rub the Canadians, that mill about here, the wrong way.

No. What rubs us the wrong way is your feeble attempts to hide your angst at losing the gold medal with comments such as these:

Remember, hockey is barely a top 5 sport in the US

You never would have said this had the U.S. won gold. Then we have such jewels as this:

Hockey is fun- but it's not the life and blood of the average American- no single sport is- that's what makes America great.

While we hold hockey more dear to our hearts than other sports the same can be said for baseball in the U.S. Yet another veiled attempt to disrespect Canada and Canadians.

Yes Canada enjoy your hockey- but don't disrespect those Americans who now turn their attention to the NBA, the Masters, The Final Four, Spring Training, the upcoming WC Soccer tournement !

We will enjoy our hockey and while we're at it we'll enjoy all these upcoming sporting events also. Because you see Branded just because we don't have the population, resources, and money to throw at big business sports does not mean we Canadians don't appreciate the entertainment value these events brings. Nor does it mean we deserve to be disrespected by people like you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

yabusama - don't fall into the trap of trying to reason with certain posters here. They are in a world of pain and are very very bitter. The only thing u need to point out is this week's U.S. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED COVER and that it's going to be a loooong and wonderful 4 years!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yabusama; "What rubs us the wrong way is your feeble attempts to hide your angst at losing the gold medal..."

Sorry- but you are wrong. First- no angst. Team USA had no pressure on them, no expectations. Unlike team Canada that boasted of "owning the podium" and wanting the Hockey Gold so bad that anything less would be a national disgrace... whew, glad that didn't happen- I'm afraid the whole nation might never recover !

And second, the USA didn't "lose the Gold"- they "won the Silver". It really is as simple as that.

"You never would have said this had the U.S. won gold."

Yabusama ! Please don't tell me what I "would have said". You have no idea what I "would have said", and pretending to know as much discredits your posts and opinions to no end. Trust me, I will never predict what you will say- I expect the same courtesy in return.

"you see Branded just because we don't have the population, resources, and money to throw at big business sports does not mean we Canadians don't appreciate the entertainment value these events brings."

You are right, you don't have much of a population- your socialist governments fault not mine. But money and resources seem to be in ample supply- after all Canada doled out 117 million dollars in specialized training just for these Olympics- to "Own the Podium" I think was the target! Who are you kidding yabusama- now that sounds like sour grapes to me. Go ahead enjoy your hockey, stretch it out over 4 years if you want too- but try not to insult we Americans that have so many other options. I see where Horsefella has offered some assistance.

Moderator: Readers, no more sniping at each other please. Focus your comments on the story, not at or about each other.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded, thanks for supplying my morning laugh! Anyone who has followed your posts over the past 2 weeks knows that had the impossible happended, you would be celebrating hockey as the best thing since sliced bread! And according to US DEFENCEMAN JACK JOHNSON; "You don't win a silver in hockey, you LOSE a gold" Your own countryman! 4 loooong years!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

hoserfella; Glad I could help you start your day right. "according to US DEFENCEMAN JACK JOHNSON; "You don't win a silver in hockey, you LOSE a gold"

To each his own I guess. BTW, did Jack Johnson refuse to accept his Silver ? Nah, I didn't think so- in fact I'm willing to bet I can find his smiley face on the podium at the medals ceremony ! Ha-ha. Enjoy your day hoser.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Enjoy my day!? Branded, I've been enjoying my whole week since 8am Monday morning! A little bit of advice; You reap what you sow!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This 'I'm better than you' banter is quite enjoyable to watch. bottom line is; CANADA beats US 3-2 in overtime to claim ice hockey GOLD!! This conversation probably wouldnt be going on so long if it wasnt Canada vs US. To be honest im glad it was our arch rivals, the Americans, in the Gold medal game.

As a CANADIAN, i couldnt be prouder. Especially because we won hockey GOLD TWICE in our home country (mens and womens)!

The signs are right, Hockey is OUR game.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"To be honest im glad it was our arch rivals, the Americans, in the Gold medal game."

Me too ! I mean who would have predicted the 5th ranked team in the tournement to make it all the way to the Gold medal game ? As an American I couldn't be prouder ! Ranks right up there with the 4 man bobsled Gold and the Nordic Combined Gold- Grand surprises indeed !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Congrats to the Great White North for being the better team in a great game. Enjoy the title for the next 4 years.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Go ahead enjoy your hockey, stretch it out over 4 years if you want too- but try not to insult we Americans that have so many other options. I see where Horsefella has offered some assistance.

Didn't realize you were so easily insulted. By the facts no less. Poor you. Be proud of your hockey team. No one has once stated you shouldn't be. For a team, you quite rightly pointed out, was not considered to be in medal contention, to reach the gold medal game and almost beat Canada, the favourites, on home ice is a great accomplishment. No one has stated any different. You talk about insulting you Americans. Where has anyone in this conversation insulted Americans?

Please don't tell me what I "would have said". You have no idea what I "would have said", and pretending to know as much discredits your posts and opinions to no end. Trust me, I will never predict what you will say- I expect the same courtesy in return.

I'm only going by your past remarks on this subject and since the game ended. I know damn well you wouldn't have made the remark. I stand by my statement. You have no idea what courtesy is to sit back and criticize my fellow countrymen and women. I suggest watching Tom Brokaw's piece on Canada and what our country means to yours.

Sincerely one proud Hoser!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yabusama; And if I may...

"we Canadians don't appreciate the entertainment value these events brings. Nor does it mean we deserve to be disrespected by people like you."

So to borrow a phrase; "Didn't realize you were so easily insulted. By the facts no less. Poor you."

Seems things in Canada haven't changed much; you all can dish it out but hey, can't take much of your own medicine.

"You have no idea what courtesy is to sit back and criticize my fellow countrymen and women."

No criticism whatsoever ! I have merely spent my time pointing out the wonderful performance by team America- I have since been ridiculed and shouted down by posters who think I should be wallowing in Canada's Gold medal- and heaven forbid I dare say that hockey simply isn't that big in the US- and the numbers support that statement ! I am amazed at how many Canadians have shown up here demanding that I acknowledge their dominance, that I should bow down in the prescence of such power, that I should relish in Canadas Gold medal- or face the consequences of public ridicule ! Whoa up ! Stop and listen to yourselves ! You're taking "cyberbullying" to a new degree ! "4 loooong years" ? What the hell is that ? Calm yourself people- it's over ! Time to move on, I got a Final Four bracket to complete !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - "Many of you, horsefella, kreza23,roomtemperature, etc seem to think Americans are in agony over "winning" the Silver."

When did I ever say anything about the US being in agony? I congratulated Team USA and haven't made a single negative comment towards them. Nor have I been here trying to rub it in anyone's face. All I've said is that you were wrong in blaming Miller for being out of position on the goal. I said that he had very good position, and that Crosby just shot it sooner than expected and snuck it between Miller's legs. That's just the way the game goes sometimes. You can have perfect positioning and still get beat.

And again, your comment about the World Championships determining anything is just plain ridiculous. A lot of the best players in the world can't play in that tournament because it goes on during the NHL playoffs. If you're looking for another tournament outside of the Olympics that means anything, the World Cup of Hockey is where it's at. The States won in 96, and Canada in 2004, and the next one will be held in 2011. This tournament is organized by the NHL, so all the best players are eligible for this one.

"ha- hardly Buddy ! We got NBA playoffs, The Final Four, The Masters, The WC soccer tournement, ML baseball, and of course the NFL ! See why Americans have no time for this "Own the podium" BS ?"

I don't know what kind of preconceived notions you have about Canada, but TV's DO exist there. There are plenty of Canadians (including myself) who have grown enjoying some, or all of those sporting events you've mentioned.

"Seems things in Canada haven't changed much; you all can dish it out but hey, can't take much of your own medicine."

Again, I haven't done any trash-talking, but judging by your comments, it looks like it goes both ways.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Many of you, horsefella, kreza23,roomtemperature, etc seem to think Americans are in agony over "winning" the Silver

Branded, not once did I say that. In fact, the overwhelming majority of Americans on this thread have been very cool about the game and Canada's success. Except you. You took every opportunity to slag Canada from day one and are now paying the price for some of us having a very good memory. Like I said before, you reap what you sow!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Horsefella- Again I ask;

"the overwhelming majority of Americans on this thread have been very cool about the game and Canada's success. Except you."

SO WHAT ? I simply prefer to spend my comment writing time on the obviously ignored story- how succesful team USA's run was ! Why do you insist that I bow down and wallow and grovel in Canada's good fortune- and really, that's all it was- fortunate. 5 holing the goalie from a sharp angle like Crosby did was, A) probably not his (Crosby's) intention, I'm sure he was just throwing the puck on net. And B) One of the few times that Miller was actually caught out of position- pure luck ! So "Mr. 4 looooggg years" you may bully others into accepting your version of the games- but not this poster. I stand by my viewpoints 100%- The USA played a helluva tournement for a buncha kids. And in winning the Silver they've showed nothing but class and integrity- no gloating from our side. Can Canada and the hoserfellas or Yabusamas say the same ? Sheesh.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

...and the denial continues.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"and the denial continues."

What do you want to say, that the cup is half empty ? Nonsense ! USA-USA-USA ! Great tournement ! Well done- enjoy the medal !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Branded - A) somehow Crosby has similarly "thrown the puck on net" 42 times this year so far. Well on his way to a 50 goal season. B) pure luck? I doubt the 22 year-old captain of a Stanley Cup (thats the big, silver trophy NHL champs get) team and GOLD MEDAL OLYMPIC team has luck - just uncanny skill. Oh, and by the way, it was 37 year-old Brian Rafalski who was caught out of position by Crosby on the OT (thats sports speak meaning Overtime) goal. So much for your "bunch of kids" excuse! Oh dear! 4 llloooooooooooog years!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

hoserfella- you seem pretty determined to have the last word- I mean even bringing in such an "off topic" post as Sid "the Squid" Crosby's NHL stats ? Gimme a break- nothing to do with his blind fling during the Olympics- not much skill really- just pure luck ! Nothing I'm sure he's proud of either. It's not like he deked a defensmen and slotted the winner- nope- just threw some trash goalside and lo and behold- it went in. More about MIller's mistake than Crosby's skill. In any case I'm sure the American "kids" will enjoy their Silver for their lifetime- a remarkable achievement- considering they weren't on "the quest"- to "Own the Podium" ! LOL ! Enjoy your record haul USA- You deserve it !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yabusama; "And Miller let that trash in. What does that say about his skill?"

Overall ? Nothing ! Remember he was the MVP of the tournement, but that doesn't mean he didn't make a few mistakes- all "great" players do.

Not sure what your on about here;

"No, you're NEVER disrespectful on these forums are you?"

The "Own the Podium" program was Canada's attempt to win the most medals at the Games. It was common knowledge with every news outlet having a go at the COC after they conceded the title to the US. The program was termed- "arrogant, unnecessary, very un-Canadian, and worst of all stress inducing to the athletes"... not my words, mind you, just a few adjectives preened from the various sports websites out there including SI/CNN, NBC Sports, The Chicago Tribune and the Washington Post. If you find Canada's "Own the Podium" program an embarrasment- welcome to the club. But disrespectful ? Never !

"When compared to your slagging and backhanded comments towards not just Canada's athletes but Canadians in general, absolutely."

Many Canadians, in their own words and actions, were polarized by these Olympics- and the Hockey team in particular. It seems that the whole "Own the Podium" and "Winning the Hockey Gold" rubbed many the wrong way- It's not how Canadians are they said. "Canadians are not material possesion oriented", "Canadians are not so competitive as to risk injury to other athletes", "Canadians are not defined by the nations hockey players" ! Now that last one I would agree with, but the rest ? I dunno. Seeing Canadians bust out the old bright red maple leaf flag and parade it around the streets and inside the stadiums simply reeked of a national pride just waiting to come out of mothballs. Canadians simply couldn't help themselves- they really are a nationalistic bunch. The Hockey final was just a sea of red and white- and when the Americans scored the tie goal- whew, you could have heard a pin drop ! The dire looks, the hair grabbing, the shocked looks of those in the crowd like- "how dare the Americans spoil OUR party" ! It was a classic sports moment ! Now here we are weeks after the games and Canadians are still demanding that everyone out their "acknowledge" their superiority on the hocey rink. Honestly, Yabusama- Americans would never sink as low as to do that ! It's only a game, time to move on, take those posters down off yer wall- make room for mammas photos again ! "4 looog years" is waaay to long to continue the obsession- it's not healthy. Besides the WC soccer tournement is just around the corner. Whazzat ? Canada's not playing ? Oops, my bad. Maybe you better keep them posters up till Fall !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I believe that many on these posting miss the point of the Olympics. It is to show unity with other nations, to demonstrate that mankind can meet peacefully and compete in sports in good will with each other. All the nationalist BS just cheapens what the game was all about.

I say as an individual American good one Canada, for the win in Hockey and for a great winger Olympics.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

JHansen, it's refreshing to see such class after reading a few previous comments by posters we shall not name. well said.

It's obvious you feel threatened and insecure about other people's achievements.

If i remember correctly the canadians weren't clamoring for 'gold only' like you claim. They said something to the effect of owning the podium which means ALL medals.

I think the usa and canada are the only two countries who rank performance based on TOTAL medals won and not simply gold only, which pretty much every other country does. Maybe you don't know this fact? Evidently not since you seem to be losing control of your better judgement by making more delusional posts.

It just so happens that canada pulled an impressive feat and breaking a winter olympic record, surprising themselves in the process.

Hats off to all my canadian friends and also to the americans who won the most total medals.
