Another one who play the AUKUS circus, but none has the courage not to send their athletes. They know that China will have much more economic power and being against China will have the consequences.

The irony is who started the whole drama is US, that proclaims itself as the "champion" of freedom and human rights, but in that country the human rights and liberties of all minorities (Blacks, Latins, Asians, Muslims, LGBTIQ) are violated in the whole country every day, the good old US double standards..

South Korea announce they won't boycott. Knew they would cave considering this is the Moon administration. Now let see if Kishida has the balls to boycott. Let's see how true democracy truly is and that ain't just all talk. I am also looking at Germany response.

Not a bad idea... this way the athletes who trained for this for years and years still get to do their thing. A total boycott isn't going to change anything China does internally or externally. China does not care much about what others think.

If my government didn't do it, I'd emigrate.

But I expect my country's athletes to show some balls, and ignore the games.

(from one Canadian to the rest of the world)

Yes, what about the sponsors.

Good read, this is where it can truly make a difference and focus minds.

Time to get serious.

It's all downhill from here,it seems.

How will Japan prime minister decide for it.

I hope he take an necessary action as a Asian leader.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And Japan? It should be an easy decision with all the tough talking right?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The EU member states will make an collective move, are most likely to follow suit of the US & allies.

I bet Japan will also boycott it diplomatically.

Covid resurgence may allow for an excuse of absence.

A fundamental question, having long being overlooked, better now be addressed; How come political/state officials should attend the Olympics? Let's let athletes run for themselves.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

All the athletes who get on the podium should protest China's genocide one way or another (a hand symbol or a banner). Would China lock every one of them up? Or disqualify everyone?!

When you have diplomats and heads of state from all over the world coming to meet in Beijing things will be talked about, deals will be done and money will be made. Some of you know what I’m talking about. Geopolitical influence and trade alliances may shift and countries without delegates will miss out on that.

You should know the answer to this question: money.

Oops!! Spoke to soon. Back to cheering “The Great Red Dragon” against “the West” so soon ??

I say a full boycott is the only way. Yet, if athletes want to go and compete, they are free to do so under the generic Olympic flag.

This is yet another reason why the Olympics shouldnt be passed about from year to year like a hot potato. Have a permanent site for the Summer Games in Greece. Winter Games in Switzerland. This would cut down on the corruption of the IOC and the politicking that accompany every set of Games.

Sounds ideal @Attilathehungry 11:33am (especially for the boost to the Greek economy) but the IOC would lose so many opportunities for aiding in graft and corruption abroad.

Agreed.:

Canada UK Well done!!!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Rights groups have called for a full-blown boycott of the Beijing Winter Games,

I support that 100%

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

If the athletes are going, then it is not really a boycott. China has come a long way that the US is afraid of upsetting China with a full boycott.

Agree again, only I would say just keep them in Greece forever. After all, isn't that where they were always held every year in Antiquity?

SIGH...If only....

Seems that the LDP are like Tigers within the confines of their borders. Once outside they morph into house kittens, albeit not as cute or lovable.

Attn. Hiro

Germany will not take part in a diplomatic boycott. Bundeskanzler Scholz made this already clear. There will be no major changes in the China policy by the Federal Government of Germany

Hiro: "South Korea announce they won't boycott. Knew they would cave considering this is the Moon administration. Now let see if Kishida has the balls to boycott."

Kishida has almost more or less said they will not. They would have already jumped up and said they are boycotting once the US did if that was the intent. Instead you got the, "We are looking into it. We want to make the decisions based on Japanese interests", which means they want to go. So, are you going to say you "knew it considering the Abe -- I mean Kishida -- cabinet? Both South Korea and Japan are obviously a lot closer proximity-wise to China, and a lot more dependent on it for trade. It is, ergo, not quite as easy for either of them to jump up and boycott, especially when Japan wants it's Sapporo claim to be realized. If China says "No" to that, that's the end of it. I suspect Japan will try to both "boycott it in spirit" but still send a delegate team to the games, and ask both parties to understand. Plus, you KNOW how they love to win even if that means it was only because of a lack of competition (just look at baseball in Tokyo). So, the more nations that boycott, the more medal potential.

Hope Japan doesn't follow suit.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The NHL should follow suit and refuse to send Hockey's top stars to Beijing.

The entirety aka Olympics is simply a scheme by the IOC to fatten its coffers with the pretense of good.

It's a corrupt organization wedded to marketeers and China, so what? Human Rights? Start at home and put your own house in order. As for genuine pressure on China: the hundreds of Fortune 500 corporations that ave relocated large portions of their industries in China need to take heed - as do consumers who purchase those goods. Example: your iPhone, just to begin with - a diplomatic boycott is meaningless. Fact is, all those under the banner 'diplomats' should remain home as there is a pandemic. Read the memo.

Why not separate politics and sport same as separating church and government.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

25psot, spot on. China could then take the wind out of everyone’s sails by announcing a blanket ban on any diplomatic presence. Problem solved, for the CCP. “You weren’t invited anyway.”

(Especially during the WURS epidemic.)
