Short Track Speed Skating is like Roller Derby. I love it when people collide.

I agree with kisekicaroline, but of course since the judge is canadian and they were on canadian soil, not to mention the winner of the gold medal was a canadian, what can you do? Same thing with what happened to J.R. Celski last week, he lost his balance, Francois Hamelin grabbed his hips, celski went down, and guess who got DQ'ed? The American, not the Canadian. Clearly the judge is biased in my opinion.

how often can you win short track when others crash into a pile?

Fairly frequently, from what I've seen...

By the way, I love short track skating.

My favorite is that Australian Short Track Skater Steven Bradbury. He won 2 gold medals, which is more than the whole country of Japan back in 2002. He won because he was so far behind the other skaters, while Ohno and the Koreans crashed into a pile, Bradbury was the one who skated for the gold.

Bradbury called himself the luckiest guy in the world, because how often can you win short track when others crash into a pile?

Koreans hating Ohno has nothing to do with him having Japanese ancestry.

They like Mao Asada, and she's Japanese.

South Koreans hate Apolo Anton Ohno because of his dirty shoving tactics and caused the Korean skater to be disqualified back in 2002. That is when the USOC server crashed, because 40,000 hate mails were sent from South Korea to Ohno.

Koreans hating Ohno has nothing to do with him having Japanese ancestry. They hate him, because they think he cheats and shoves a Korean skater into disqualification. I think Ohno should endorse himself to Korea. Koreans can use Ohno as a hate campaign ad. He might make more money in Korea than Yuna Kim.

Koreans hate Ohno more than they love Yuna Kim. So you get the idea how much they hate the guy.

Short-track speedskating would lose a lot of excitement without Ohno. He's like the Dale "The Intimidator" Earnhardt of speedskating. Daring audacious moves are a sight to see --sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't-- but always fun to watch.

Ohno's spin on his DQ was that it was a conspiracy by Canadian officials. Right. Even his American teammates say he's a teammate in name only and will be glad to see him retire.

Would hate to get on the wrong side of those Koreans!

paulinusa - "That said, love him or hate him, how many of you were aware of short track skating until he came along."

Oh gimme a break. Despite what you may think, the entire world doesn't revolve around America and it's athletes. I, as well as many others, were well aware of short-track speed skating long before he became enemy number one in South Korea. I'm sure he did a lot to make it more popular in the States, and I respect all of his achievements, but that comment is ignorance at it's worst.

it's funny how apolo got disqualified when the canadian hamelin did the same thing to the korean skater and still won the gold medal. oh well, at least the koreans are happy that apolo got DQed.

@MadokaKato: Your last sentence is spot on.

In this sport you win some and you lose some for others. What they need to do is to allow some pushing and shoving kinda like the old roller derby days. Overall, Ohno acheived a notorius status in this sport and he's walking away with 8 medals in total. Congrats and we'll see you on reality TV soon!

As an American, I have mixed feelings about Ohno. He's a great athlete but his particular ego rubs me wrong. That said, love him or hate him, how many of you were aware of short track skating until he came along.

As Junnama said, short track is always like this. It is a wild sport and skaters get DQ'd all the time. You cause it, and other skaters go down; others cause it, and you go down. It's the nature of the sport.

-It looks like Apollo Ohno #4 had his hand on #3 hip (but it is hard to tell from video). But the Korean #1 fell by himself and tried to (blantantly) hand-trip the Canadian behind him who eventually won.

-so I guess hand-tripping is legal in short track.

Apollo? Oh, No!

Short-track speedskating: too many collisions and DQs

thanks to Apolo Ohno.

Short-track speedskating: too many collisions and DQs. A marginal Olympic sport.

I like the sound of this Oh No guy - and how he winds up the South Koreans! Good luck to him! It is what international sports are all about - and the guy is the best speed skater in history. Fact. Is it true that most South koreans hate him because he is of Japanese ancestry (or, in the Japanese lanaguage : "haafu")?

Yuna Kim is the most loved athlete in Korea, while Apolo Anton Ohno is the most hated athlete in Korea.

During the 2002 Olympics when he got away with shoving Korean skaters, and had one Korean disqualified from getting the gold. The USOC server crashed, because there were about 40,000 hate mails sent to Ohno coming from Korea. When the World Cup was being played in Korea in 2002, Korea played USA, and there were nothing but hate signs of Ohno. The funny thing is, no one on the US soccer team really knew what the Koreans were talking about since they didn't know Ohno. After one Korean scored the tying goal, that player was doing a skating gesture.

Korean are very entertaining, when they hate you, they really let you know..

I don't know what short-track you're watching. With or without Ohno, races are always like this.

Without Ohno short track will return to a fair play sports.

The picture says it all -I would expect Apollo Ohno to make a South Korea publicity tour soon.

He is afraid to travel to South Korea.

Never really followed this sport or Ohno, but I will say that those races were very exciting.

Hamelin had a great night, Gold for Canada. yay

Good luck to Ohno in his post career endeavours, he was a legend of the sport. His feats are unprecedented and staggering, and along with Koss is the greatest skater in history. Sure, he may not be popular in Korea - probably hated actually - but medals are medals and you do what you have to do to win them. Losers can please themselves!

soon he will retire and we will enjoy clean short track sport

"Apolon" Ohno did very bad things in his sports career. He needs to apologize and return his medals because he won with the help of the judges. He and fair play live on different planets.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Smith why are you so mean to our Olympic champions?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

smithinjapan, brillian post, so funny I hope Ohno apologizes to all skaters he had disqualified.

"soon he will retire and we will enjoy clean short track sport"

No kidding. I wonder if he'll say to his kids, as he points to his medals: "This one I got when I knocked over a Korean and HE got DQ'd. THIS one I got when I nudged aside ANOTHER Korean and he took out his friend. This one was for the team, when I pushed aside yet another Korean, who was then disqualified...."

Anton Ohno, the most shameful name in the short track skating profession ever!

soon he will retire and we will enjoy clean short track sport

Ohno rules! USA! USA! USA!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Agreed. But unfortunately many American athletes act just like him."

Mods: This is very odd, since I did not write nor post the above comment. I posted a VERY different comment in reply to LoveUSA's comment on Ohno's ethnicity. How on earth did the above post get there?

LoveUSA: It's odd how the Japanese are so obsessed with someone being from Japanese ancestry when they're famous, but not permitting them the title of ancestry in most cases when they're NOT famous (or bring up the idea of dual-citizenship, etc.).

Not to get too nit-picky, but Ohno is BRAZILIAN-American, not Japanese-American.

Ohno has a bad habit of trying to slip inside when other players are ahead. More times than not it has resulted in disqualification of players, and even wipe-outs. When he finally got a DQ in the 500 I thought it was a moment of cosmic justice, and all the more sweet because the Korean's got a silver when he got the call. I WILL say this for him, though, he took it very gracefully.

Congrats to all, all the same, and especially Canada for a couple more golds today. Shame about the curling -- must be a pretty bitter pill to swallow to win all games but the last, and miss out on the gold medal by one point. Awesome win for the Swedes, though.
