"Nathan Chen's technique trumped Yuzuru Hanyu's superiority in program components to win the men's figure skating event at the Rostelecom Cup on Saturday."

I like how Hanyu's "superiority" has already been decided as fact, despite him coming in second and therefore being... ummm... inferior to the person in first.

Nathan Chen is a star in the ascendancy and an exemplary performer, but Yuzuru is still the King.

@smithinjapan

it says superiority in program components as you quoted yourself.

What it should say is what it alludes to later, in that Hanyu was superior in the free skate, but was bad in the short skate and couldn't make up the gap in points.

A lot of the fans of Hanyu are incredibly over the top and fanatical. What the heck is a grown man going to do with one single gigantic Winnie the Pooh bear, let alone a whole ice rink full of them? Even before Chen got his scores, some of them were crying because he didn't slip up. Absolutely embarrassing, immature, unsportsmanship-like and eye-rolling.

Frankly I'm surprised Hanyu got the higher score in the free - practically all his jumps looked Messy with a capital M. His knee looked inches away from the ground after his first jump, and his legs were all over the place in the second. People were always moaning that judges were favouring Chen's namesake from Canada, but I'm beginning to wonder whether he's the only one.

I just hope the winner of the next Olympic's mens wins without falling over three times, and the winner of the womens can win without having to bribe the judges.

OK, having watched Chen's FS again, he did make big mistakes. Perhaps that's why he didn't get one single Winnie the Pooh bear.

Nathan Chen is from the United States btw, not Canada. Congratulations on Chen, he is a rising star. But I'm more disappointed in lack of coverage by mainstream American media in celebrating our Asian-American athletes winning as figure skating no longer popular in the States compared to other type of sports such as baseball or basketball etc....

Well Michelle Kwan and Kristina Yamaguchi were huge stars in the U.S. First of all, regular competitions are not as popular as the Olympics in the U.S. Another thing is that female figure skating has always been more popular than the men's one.

Where did anyone say Chen came from Canada? If you're learning English, you might like to check the meaning of the word 'namesake'.

That is true. My daughter's pre-school teacher was a Hanyu fan and traveled around to go see him skate. She seemed a bit off, to be honest. I could imagine her crying after this...

I'm no skating expert, but my J-wife also always enjoys watching Hanyu skate. Something about how he skates so beautifully while others like Patrick Chan are so stiff. I wonder to myself, isn't that what ice dancing is for? But I guess the lines are kind of blurred there. That being said, even my wife was saying before this event started that Nathan Chen has very good form and could surpass Hanyu.

Pukey2,

Yes I'm fully aware about that, somebody's so cranky today, sheeesh....

the rouge: "What it should say is what it alludes to later,"

Key words being "should" and "allude", and while "superior" is quite literally said, not alluded to.

To be fair, I don't know of any Canadian skaters named "Chen", but I do know a "Chan". Can't say they are the same at all.
