Hopefully, the IOC will add human rights, freedom of expression and a free press to their list of criteria for all host nations going forward. Or do we want Myanmar or a country run by warlords to be hosting future Olympics?

“These acts are in violation of the Olympic spirit.

So is the internment of the Uighurs

Ideally yes. But that slime ball Bach was in China recently and praising their prep, so I'm not so hopeful.

Or do we want Myanmar or a country run by warlords to be hosting future Olympics?

If wined, dined, and the price is right, Bach will do it. The man has no moral compass

they are getting scared in China. A boycott is likely.

And we have to stop feeling sorry for athletes. Like any other individual they most make a choice between moral values and selfishness.

For the professional sports the Olympics are of less and less value, just a nice extra, with limited added value to an athletes career.

And I should know, sports management and marketing is my business.

i feel much more sorry for example for the womens rugby athletes over the postponement of the worldcup. That is affecting there careers significantly

"China says calls for 2022 Winter Olympics boycott doomed to fail..."

When a sentence start with: China says...

The laughter begins.

I don't feel sorry for professional athletes. I do feel sorry for amateur Olympic athletes who have been training for 15+ yrs in their sport 6 hours a day with ZERO compensation. IMHO, anyone who is paid to be an athlete should be barred from Olympic participation. That would wreck China's team, since they are all state supported - i.e. PAID athletes. I'd happily watch college players over pampered professionals making $4M-$100M+/ yr. Federer makes about $5M in direct sports earning, but $100M+ in endorsements. LeBron James makes about $28M/yr for basketball and $60M for other stuff. The 2 Olympic Gold medals paid him $50K each in 2008 and 2012. Yawn.

If an amateur athlete does well in the Olympics, they can have a career, speaking engagements, books, paid public appearances - you know that half since a sports management company would be part of it.

If they don't get to the Olympics over political crap, they might become a club coach for minimal pay. David Boudia has four Olympic medals in platform diving, 1 is gold. He sells real estate now and authored 1 book. Hardly a selfish person.

Tom Daley is probably more famous. He's never won Gold, but has 2 Bronze medals.

There are lots of Olympians who will never be able to "go pro."

Not only Olympics should be boycotted, but also doing any business with them should be boycotted.

A real boycott is a television rights boycott

Most countries depend so much on China, if China should stop trading with them, zap!

and those who refute this that no one needs China would be typing to you stark naked because most of the clothes they are wearing at the moment are from China.

Nomination

I ,nor my wife, have single piece of “ made in China” clothing or shoes. And we both have extensive wardrobes. We even check as much as possible fabrics origin.

I don’t eat anything from the place, no products at all from China. It is possible. Difficult but possible

Calls for a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on human rights grounds are “doomed to failure,” a Chinese government spokesperson said Wednesday

Hate to say it, but that sounds about right.

How often do we see comments saying "leave politics out of it" etc...

Some people are just too lethargic or not informed. Or, they are more concerned about their business ties/investments with the country.

Which is why places like China continue to get away with human rights abuses.

I'm all in favour of a boycott (even if the far right has hijacked this Irish term and now call it "cancel culture").

Every little bit helps, every gesture, every moment we stop and say "enough is enough".

For the first time, I couldn’t agree more with the Chinese government and that never happens!

When China speaks, the world leaders listen.

Well, there are ten months left. A boycott effort could pick up steam between now and then, especially if more Uighur genocide stories come out in the press.
