In particular the massacre of Koreans, Chinese, Okinawans, and even Japanese of southern provinces during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. And that was just because of rumors. What China really fears is the huge loss of face because their athletes in Japan will be welcomed and treated with respect, which shows Japanese have sang froid and poise, whereas Chinese don't seem to be able to communicate their displeasure by any means except throwing childish tantrums. I never heard of Japanese peoples hurt Chinese sport persons in Japan because of Japan - China tension. It's ridiculous reason of Communist Chinese Government’s propaganda or Communist Chinese Government is preparing to invade Senkaku Islands soon. Sometime many messages you can get from Communist propaganda. You can't ignore it. For example, Communist China has built new City on one of disputed Islands with Philippine and other South East Asia coutries. Communists are always sorting out problem by force in history. Japanese peoples don't need to hurt physically to Chinese peoples but only need to stop buying Made in China goods.

Vigilante groups were formed and a shibboleth was establish to distinguish other yellow race citizens from Japanese, (juu go en and juu go sen). Even Okinawans and some Japanese citizens of regional dialects suffered the same fate. In many cases the police and the army colluded with vigilante groups. And in some cases where they sought refuge at police stations, the mob overan them.

But here is the big kicker: among the civil unrest, police and the imperial army used it a a pretext to liquidate political dissidents. And these were Japanese citizens. You can not cover the sky with your hand.
