China accuses U.S. of politicizing Winter Olympics as boycott talk mounts

China on Tuesday accused the U.S. of "politicizing sports", after Washington's top diplomat said he was seeking consensus among allies before any possible call to boycott next year's Beijing Winter Olympics.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a congressional hearing in Washington that the U.S. was "consulting very closely with allies and partners to look at the common concerns that we have, and ideally to establish a common approach" on the Games, scheduled for February.

There will be "more on that in the weeks to come", Blinken warned, as the Olympic showpiece becomes a flashpoint between the West and China, which is accused of widespread rights violations.

His comments were met with anger in Beijing, which denies any rights abuses, whether in Hong Kong or the Uighur-Muslim homeland of Xinjiang.

"Politicizing sports is against the spirit of the Olympic Charter, and harms the interests of athletes... as well as the international Olympic cause," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters Tuesday. "Relevant parties should immediately stop their use of the Olympic Games to engage in political manipulation."

President Joe Biden's administration has declined for months to present its position on a possible boycott of the Games, a showpiece which China hopes will crown the centenary year of its Communist Party, as well as underscoring its rebound from the coronavirus.

Blinken said a united front with allied nations would be "much more effective than doing something on our own".

Republicans have called for an outright boycott of the Beijing Games over alleged human rights violations by the Chinese government, in particular its repression of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region -- treatment that has been described by Washington as a "genocide" despite Beijing's protests.

Members of Biden's Democratic Party have also started to speak out against China's actions.

Last month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a "diplomatic boycott" of the Winter Olympics.

"Let's not honor the Chinese government by having heads of state go to China," she said.

Another bipartisan measure introduced Monday called for the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Winter Games "unless the Chinese government ends its ongoing crimes against the Uighur people".

Good. China's atrocities against the Uighurs cannot be ignored. If countries do not boycott Beijing, individual athletes should consider doing so.

i hope they get boycotted and even as far as embargoed

Says the country that politicizes everything. And lies to boot.

Beijing got the 2008 Olympics on the promise that they would liberalize and move closer towards democracy.

Guess what?

I am an American siding with China on this one. The Olympic Games should be apolitical.

You cannot be serious. Since when have totalitarian regimes NOT used Olympics as political propoganda? Germany, Russia and Communist China. Every single time.

Boycott the Genocide Games 2022.

Hitler tried to show the world that Aryan athletes were the best in the world. Jesse Owens, among others, proved the Nazis were wrong. If the games had been boycotted, he never would have had a chance to shine.

From a practical view, winter olympics are much more difficult to move to another location. Bob slee tracks are few and between. I guess only the Us could do it or Pyeonchang( not sure the bob track is still there). Japan will have a bellyfull of the Olympics. There ars always solutions though, but must be decided latest September.

I agree to take away the Games from China for humanitarian and political reasons. The Tokyo Games must be postponed to 2022. It is a lie numbers are down in Tokyo, they are manipulated. We are currently( only even with official numbers ) at a yearly mortality rate of 36500 ( 100 per day) or about 5x what it was last year in Japan.

asking the athletes to stay away from either Olympic is useless, they have shown their selfishness , sufficiently on Tokyo

I hope a lot of countries will boycott L.A. 2028, people cannot ignore atrocities made by unites states of america in Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia of forget all the people died due to bombs in Serbia

and from now to 2028 I'm sure the great US Army will keep going in killing people.

If Biden won’t hold the CCP responsible for COVID, why would he hold them responsible for Uighers?

Train for 6 hrs a day for 5-15 yrs and don't get to compete? The year of the Olympics is the only time those athletes get to be selfish. They've earned it. All the other years, they don't have time to be selfish any more than a single-income family can afford for the only person with a job to stay home. These are not wealthy people - except those few sports where someone can be both a professional player AND still be allowed in the Olympics - golf, baseball, basketball and tennis. It isn't like Olympic Judo pays well.

When people say boycott, I ask what did the 1980 and 1984 boycotts accomplish?

I'm no fan of Nancy, but this has got to be one of the best things she's ever said. LOL

I hope Winter Olympics doesn't go ahead in China as they're purging the Uyghurs minority. I don't want Olympics to be a political statement but if it can be leveraged to pressure a country to clean up their act, then I'm all for it!

Mr The Fu,

i have been and still am managing top athletes. The majority of athletes do not only train for olympics, actually almost none of them. The Olympics is one event, and we can hold it safely with no problems in 2022. The importance of the olympics are fading. One can not build a career on the olympics. It can give an extra boost in normal times but these olympics bring no joy and it remains to be seen if they will not taint athletes reputations depending on the outcome of things. Among my athletes over a hundred were olympic medalists and currently i work indirectly with maybe 30 to 40 potential medalists. I am against their participation in Tokyo and they know that. I am against to an important degree because as a professional i think it will harm their image and mainly because the games in 2021 are a health risk to high to take.

The 80 boycott denied a totalitarian dictatorship the attention and legitimacy it desperately craved. "See? We are not a bunch to drunken brutes! We are holding the Olympics!" China is the same.

The 84 boycott allowed the overwhelming majority of clean athletes to actually compete against other clean athletes (Ben Johnson excepted) and not against doped up Warsaw pact human/horse hybrids.

That is what they accomplished.

Boycott the dictator games.

If the US want to or are gonna boycott the games they should say so now.

They can't decide for themselves?

I'm a Hoof care specialist (Bovine) and I say boycott the winter olympics just because.

Robert said: i have been and still am managing top athletes.

I only asked a question. What long-lasting good came from any Olympic boycott?

How many shot-put experts do you manage? Or javelin experts? Bet those people are rolling in the cash! Er ... perhaps not.

Sport being hijacked by silly diaper politicians, Uighur Genocide is a hoax, it's the lies of the century, according to China Foreign Ministry......the IOC and world knew the dirty trick of the west, as they did the same in 2008 Beijing Olympic on Tibet issues.

Did Uighur refugees come running in boatload to Europe?? did anyone get killed in Xinjiang except those die hards jihadists, terrorists, separatists, Those that live on the fallacy are ETIM sympathizer spewing disinformation on genocide. The western world/US generated 90% of the world’s refugees, due to their relentless bombing and killing that cost the lives of 11 million innocent civilians and their children in 9 middle eastern countries. These are not genocide?? not crime against humanity?? how buffoonish of those hijack and distort the version of genocide over a sport event. Your ancestors should be proud of you!!

Well good for them to boycott, who cares, 5-Lies Alliance + chihuahua who else?? there are 200 countries last count.
