A worthy champion. Kei's legs were gone. Next time Nishi-kun!

What a champion despite the loss. First player from an Asian country to reach a mens grand slam singles final (of course Michael Chang represented the USA), and his spectacular run to the final suggests he will win a few grand slam titles in his time. Such humility in his interview too, won me over after never having seen him before.

Don't let how he lost the final diminish how he got to the final. He gave everything he had and that's all we could ask of Nishikori! Congrats!

Not to be a downer, but remember that last year Cilic was banned for drug use. So I wonder.

It was a nail biting well fought game. Next time, Nishikori kun. You can do it!!

That was a beatdown. Kudos to Nishikori for the remarkable effort he put in throughout the tournament. The last hurdle proved just one too many. Congrats to Cilic for the win.

Cilic a worthy champion. Well done to both.

@gokai, the official story on Cilic's ban was that the illegal substance was in a glucose pill his mother gave him, so most likely an accident.

Well done, Nishikori! A personal best ATP ranking of 8, a first Grand Slam final under the belt, plus some big scalps along the way.
These giant guys like Cilic and Del Petro aren't his favourite types of opponents but with more experience against their likes I'm sure he'll figure out a way to counter their big power games.
Still, Nishikori is fulfilling his potential, and predictions of the likes of Nadal who forsaw he would be a top 10 player, and now that he very much is.
And well done to Cilic, too. Good for Croatia, a truly beautiful country.

Well, at least we won't have to watch replay after replay on the TV for a week now!

Mmmm sounds like the Japanese soccer team announcing that they couldn't play their soccer style....

Nishikori is a player on the rise. Hoping for more from him in the future.

Pity. He was exhausted friom his previous 2 marathon games.

"He was off, whether because of the wind, the accumulated fatigue from a pair of four-hour-plus victories over No. 3 Wawrinka and No. 5 Milos Raonic, or perhaps knowing what was at stake for him, his country and his continent."
Or perhaps he was just outplayed. They make it sound like only one player went into this after some other games and Cilic was coming in fresh, as though he hadn't played up until now -- there was no wind or no heat affecting him, etc. etc. And while I'm not entirely surprised, it's sad to hear people claiming as such (that Nishikori was exhausted but Cilic, who also played just the other day, was not), or suggesting he might have been doping, etc.
Nishikori did amazingly well to get this far, and while I was hoping for a little more of a match between these two and less of a pouncing, he's still the first Asian player to get to the final, and he still has plenty of chances to win in the future. Lest we forget this was until the end a series of 'upsets', with Nadal not being able to compete, the 10th seed beating the first seed and the 14th seed beating Federer. Good on both Cilic and Nishikori, and here's hoping for more from both in the future.

so close but so far, in some ways im thankful that he didnt win otherwise wed see it on TV/News for the next 3 month. It was the main story on the news yesterday, pushed down the order today. please lets stop hearing the excuses, no ifs or buts, he got beaten by a better player today, that simple.

Congratulations to both Cilic and Nishikori. They both really have come a long way and have shown that the young guns in tennis are a force to be reckoned with. No longer are there the days when only the so-called "big 4" (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, and Murray) would win these events. Also, after listening to their post-game interviews, I was pleased to see that they both are very humble and gracious people, thanking both their fans and coaches.

Congratulations to both players. In the end it came down to ace serves mostly. Great effort on the part of both players.

Kei had a great and historic run. He should be proud as should we.
