I love baseball but these salaries are insane.

The union and league are likely headed for a protracted labor dispute after the average major league salary fell on opening day in 2021 for the fourth consecutive season.

Contracts have actually been decreasing. Spring training is still a ways away, so no need to be too concerned about the lockout for now

Essentially, one of the big points of contention is that the players want to be paid their worth earlier in their career. For example, Shohei Ohtani is already a MVP, but he's only paid $3M this season and $5.5M next season

While the owners don't care if the players get their big paycheck earlier in their career, so long as the total amount of pay throughout their career is the same. Usually by the time the players get their biggest contract, it's when they start to go down from their peak, so by the tail-end of the contract, they're getting paid high for diminished returns

So both sides have to resolve that if they want to avoid a 1994-95 washout without a World Series. The Sammy Sosa - Mark McGwire homerun record chase of 1998 helped save the league back to the good graces of the fans then. Who knows what it would take, if any, to save it if there's another washout
