The coach should had chewed his player out immediately after the play - it was unquestionably very late hit; it's not even close

Then sit the player down for some time - several plays, a drive, a quarter, a half, maybe the whole game

Then after the game, take responsibility for the hit, that the player would be disciplined, and that it won't happen again

Then maybe there won't be calls for him to quit

The only reason I can think of that would cause him to take 2 weeks to make an apology is that he did indeed order his player to injure the opponent. Well I guess we'll find out now that it is officially a police matter. Also, the player that made the late tackles will be holding a press conference on his own, without going through his school which have been ridiculously silent on the matter.

expat, the coach is on the board of the university, so simply quitting as coach is no skin off his nose. The press are reporting that he snorted after the story originally broke and said his players should continue to do more of the same.

Also in his 'apology' he repeatedly mispronounced the name of the opponent Kwansei Gakuin, calling it 'Kansai' (a different university), which either deliberately or from ignorance seems to have got up people's noses.

Here's the video of the illegal hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6_yfY3jc-A

The QB has clearly released the football and is totally defenseless.

you probably haven’t seen the video, but you should. The QB releases the ball, puts his arms down, walks 3 steps in a totally relaxed state with the play already dead, and then is hit in the lower back with the full force of the diving defensive player.

Not even close to being a “late hit.” It’s an attempt to injure.

That hit was way beyond a late hit.

fwiw, I think it's probably appropriate for the coach to quit, but even if he told the players to "rough them up a bit", surely not that rare a request in the real world of sports, the hit in question goes way beyond any common sense understanding of that request that into willful assault territory. The player should be banned.

I believe the correct term is a "late hit." Tackling is a part of the game and players sometimes mistime their tackles and run into the QB after the ball has been released, BUT if this coach has been routinely ordering his players to intentionally take players out by doing this, then that is a whole 'nother ball game and pretty lame if you ask me.

Arrgh

You’re exactly right. It was a blatant attempt to injure.

Not only is the coach correct in quitting, the player and possibly the coach should be charged with assault.

Correction: there is a throwaway line in the article about the coach denying orders to "foul" opponents, but if you've seen the reply, "foul" is entirely too kind of a word. The player tackled the other team's quarterback from behind easily 5 steps after he'd released the ball. "Assault" would be more appropriate.

@ Belrick, @ Ricky

It's not mentioned in this article, but there was speculation on Japanese TV that the coach ordered the player to intentionally target the other team's player. Such scandals have happened before, even in the NFL, so it's not unheard of. In that kind of a case, I think that the coach's resignation would be appropriate.

Once again quitting seems too harsh. You make mistakes and learn from them. It’s called life.

He shouldn't be the one quitting! He did nothing wrong. Drop the player who made the illegal tackle. He's clearly unfit to be a team player!
