Critics speak out on Tokyo Olympic costs, pandemic, fairness

They are a waste of money and should be cancelled. Japan has more pressing needs for this insane amount of money.

The money is spent, it’s not coming back.i didn’t see the $3.5m bribe for the Olympics come back. It all pocketed. Now it’s milking time. The longer, the more milk.

The problem here is that once the visitors flow, and the covid19 spikes, it will be just a slew of anti-foreign rhetoric and endless blaming and smearing. STUPID. Move on. Save it for the next one, in three years.

The Olympic committee should be paying for all of it! Let the member countries foot the bill!

This dumb face dude should really keep his mouth shut at this point given how outrageous the cost for the tax payers is so far. He should be ashamed to even show up in public for trying to justify even further what is an awful waste of the nation financial ressources by the Japanese gouvernent which does not care at all about the future of the young generations and children of this country.

Okay you pay for it .And the sundry unintended effects that will arise from it (infection, ballooning debt, wasted infrastructure)

It feels like the games are being done for the sake of the athletes, a few companies and not the people of Japan that are paying for them. Perhaps holding the games throughout the year, instead of within 2 weeks would work better.

The Japanese mindset of focusing on their domestic situation to the extent of not considering the international perspectives, just shows how out of touch they are with the real situation...

A government group a very short time ago stated that Japanese society cannot be protected from Covid-19's spread because of differences in foreign cultures and tourists/residents here, and the fact that due to such differences legislation on safety cannot adequately be explained to them and/or enforced. Which is to say, "We are at risk because of them". You can find screen shots of them saying as much on Twitter.

This is what they are saying as foreigners were only last month allowed back in, and they are pushing to lift all limits on foreign travel before the Olympics. Take it away from them, and not just for safety reasons. It's quite clear they are not even remotely interested in the spirit of internationalism, nor in safety of anyone. If the ballooning rates, here and abroad, were not enough, this should be.

Well, that doesn’t mesh with what I see in Japan. When I work and commute, I see 30-40 year businessmen with their masks stuck under their chins, coughing and sneezing.

No other groups seem to be so cavalier except for the younger generation that just can’t seem to be able afford masks in the first place which they can’t be blamed for...

The Olympics. What exactly is the purpose? It is a one time amateur games enlivened by a genuine spirit of competition and cooperation, now completely professionalized and along with that turned into entertainment and leavened with corruption. Athletes are sponsored or 'owned' by large corporate interests such as Nike (the most obvious example). Large numbers of athletes use PEDs, especially the sponsored and top rung individuals. It is obvious bribes are involved in acquiring The Games. Recovering the investment required for infrastructure has become increasingly difficult and often befalls taxpayers in the host country.

Add to all that a worldwide pandemic. Which impacts training routines, pre-Olympic international competitions, for example, in women's soccer and alongside those concerns, the impossibility of travel for advance teams and trainers, among other difficulties. The Games are covered by a slew of international journalists and broadcast worldwide which requires large numbers of foreigners from across the globe to descend on Tokyo, well prior to the event.

The Olympics were plugged by Abe and his cronies, Abe even slid from a tube, dressed as Mario, in Brazil, a stunt which would be embarrassing to almost any world leader, perhaps proof Abe has no shame. His egomania, along with a push from Suga, determined that industrial tourism, centering on The Games would perk-up the economy. A failed policy and in fact, resulted in an adverse impact, which has destroyed certain aspects of culture and business.

There is absolutely no reason to have the Olympics, other than the vain intent to recover monies invested by corporate interests - taxpayer money is already lost and cannot be recovered. Even a billion dollar contract with NBC will not come close to offsetting costs which are fifteen times or more that amount.

Preparations were started 6 or so years ago. To not have it happen, if it is at all possible, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Even if the world was to begin to see an end to this pandemic by the coming summer (and let's hope that it does), isn't it kind of much to ask other countries that were struck far worse than Japan, and may be dealing with a grim aftermath from having thousands of deaths, to be in a festive mood and come to Japan for the sake of their economy and games? If your neighbour was in mourning after the loss of family member, would you go over and knock on their door inviting them to a party?

Lets get over this yes olympics, no olympics seesaw. So much energy & emotion. In the end who will be the satisfied winner? By default Japan is looking for a few extra golds. Can anyone hold their chin up & say it was a well-won medal? If that low standard satisfies the athletes, organizers and country at large then go for it. If you want golds with dignity wait 4 more years.

The Olympics probably need a dedicated venue that is used for all Olympic competitions, Trying to distribute the Olympics around the world so every nation has a short at it has become a huge bottomless money pit. It is supposed to be about the athletics and not nationalism and corporate profits. Pick a place, maybe even in Greece where the Olympics originated, where both winter and summer Olympics are possible, meaning most likely someplace a temperate summer climate and tall enough mountains to have reliably have sufficient snow for skiing, build the necessary facilities and hold them there each year. This describes many places and not all of them coastal. But chose a venue and make it the permanent home of the Olympics.
