Nice to see Japan Today publishing a few sumo-related articles over the past week, obviously the impact of Hoshoryu’s promotion to yokozuna.

Japan Today used to upload stories/results during the six two-week tournaments held annually, but apparently shifted away from coverage a few years ago.

As the sport becomes more popular internationally, let’s hope it receives more attention in this Japan-themed media.

One omission here that was in all the Japanese-language coverage is that Hoshoryu adopted the "Unryu-gata" ceremonial style, which begins with one arm extended and the other held across the chest, as opposed to the "Shiranui-gata" style, which is performed with both arms extended. (The above photo is a bit deceptive in this regard.)

Several of the past Mongolian Yokozuna adopted the Shiranui-gata, but Hoshoryu chose to adopt the same style as his uncle, Yokozuna Asashoryu.

There are no set criteria for promotion from the second-highest rank of ozeki but he was recommended for promotion by the Yokozuna Deliberation Council on Monday.

What is the point here? He didnt just suddenly jump from sekiwake to yokozuna. And it takes the sumo association's approval for any wrestler to be promoted, at any rank.

The point, Yubaru, is that it is a discretionary promotion. It's not assured. There was a period of time where the record achieved by Hoshoryu would not have warranted a promotion based on the average score of tournament victories and the view that three loses to lower ranked rikishi was unbecoming. The nebulous concept of hinkaku also can be used to either promote or deny.
