Interesting that they refer to him by his real name. Doesn't he have a sumo name?

It's mentioned in the article, Osunaarashi, which means Great Sandstorm.

Are they going to make him halal chanko nabe, I wonder?

I admire him having worked with muslims, it is a tough month. Orthodox Jews are doing something similar. There are exceptions during ramadan for taking medicine, etc.
Traditionally Rikishi ate a lot of fish and chicken, not sure if he gets special meals though. Chanko is actually a term that refers to the food they eat and not just nabe but also fried food, meat, etc.

Following outdated and pointless religious dietary restrictions gets no admiration from me. I'd admire him more if he ignored ramadan and ate some sausages.
I have a friend from Pakistan who calls himself a muslim. He cheats on his wife, drinks, never prays or does anything remotely religious, but won't touch pork. It irritates me to no end.

It's not a real fast, just from sunrise to sunset, as they are allowed to eat and drink from sunset to sunrise. Minor adjustment to the daily routine....

@stranger.
It also depends on the muslim sect, some are stricter than others. Ditto for other judeo/christian religions. Do you fast the week before easter?
Really depends on how well you follow your faith, so far we don't know his sect.

I'm an atheist. Sometimes I eat fast, but that's about it.

Atheist or agnostic? Many people mix those terms up.
I am buddhist but got no dietary requirements, we even reject any diety as any from of worship causes strife.

A bigger problem than his fasting is the ritual appeasing of spirits by throwing salt. Under strict shariah, that would earn him the death penalty. Lets see how that goes down with the new Egyptian moslim brotherhood government, once they have taken full control.

WilliB.
Lets not forget that Friday is his resting day and he is supposed to attend Mosque. Lots of conflicts which won't matter till he returns home.

well, if you really understand Ramadan, Muslims eat sahur in the morning before sunrise and iftar in the evening just after subdown. These are BIG meals so I cant see why Ramadan would be detrimental to a sumo wrestler.........seriously......how many rikishi are eating big macs just before a bout????
