The father of three-time Olympic women's wrestling champion Saori Yoshida has been found dead in his car.

According to police, Eikatsu Yoshida was found slumped at the wheel of his car after it hit the guardrail on the Ise expressway in Tsu, Mie Prefecture at around 7:15 on Tuesday morning. Fuji TV quoted police as saying that Yoshida was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead of an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Police said it is likely that Yoshida suffered the hemorrhage while driving and then lost control of his vehicle. He was on his way to join a training camp for Japan's women wrestlers in Tokyo.

His funeral service will be held on Friday.
