Good! Japan has so many other things it SHOULD be dealing with that hosting the Olympics should be the farthest thing from their mind!

Nice to see the people standing up against it too!

Every city offering to host any Olympic events should require the IOC to cover any losses incurred. Further thee should be no new build white elephant sports facilities. If the IOC want to gold plate the facilities they pay for it. The host country should be in control not an unelected corrupt cabal.

That banner is scandalous and a vile attack on the IOC. Tom Bach makes sure everything is above board he has no control over what happens in each country.

The scum that commuted crimes in Tokyo now mean Sapporo’s chances are scuppered. Makes me so angry, my partners cousin was likely going to get a good contract if they won and we would have gone and had a great time with a few freebies of course.

Have you see any politician or J gov talking about winter Olympics 2030? After many scandal from Olympics 2020 the only they interested is to distance themselves from any Olympics.

The prefectural capital of Hokkaido in northern Japan is now exploring the possibility of instead bidding for 2034 or later, after the scandals that surfaced last summer forced the city and the Japanese Olympic Committee to halt promoting a 2030 bid in December.

How about just not bothering at all.

Japan's bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in Sapporo has looked less and less likely to progress with public support cratering amid court hearings and guilty verdicts over bribery and bid-rigging scandals related to the Tokyo Summer Games.

Jibun no sei - it's your own fault!

Japan getting greedy they want another Olympic 7 years later

Los Angeles is the only host city that realized a profit from the games, mostly because the required infrastructure already existed, according to “The Economics of Hosting the Olympic Games” by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Tokyo has all that new infrastructure created for the 2020/2021 games. Since the city did not get much benefit from those games, perhaps it should launch a “low-cost, for-profit bid.”

If we can virtually guarantee a profit, I would support a bid. But only if a profit would be nearly certain.

Many people knew as soon as Tokyo was awarded the Olympics it would be conducted with under the table deals and mate’s rates. It is how Japan works. There were many smaller companies who went bankrupt because of the covid delay, but that didn’t affect the fat cats who had their bid rigging and bribes already in play. The unscrupulously obtained funds from these scammers should be distributed to the little guys who went bankrupt. No doubt that if Hokkaido is awarded the games it will be a repeat of the same bid rigging and bribes from the same companies.

Mori was in charge of the entire Japanese Olympic bid. Why didn't he get arrested?

Not just Japan, I think this is virtually guaranteed with any Olympics, sadly.

I actually enjoyed the Olympics up until Tokyo, but watching how the IOC pretty much forced Tokyo into holding it during the pandemic has soured me on the whole thing. The sports can be nice to watch, but I think the organization itself is rotten to the core.

The Winter Olympics are a sort after event and a proven money earner. Sapporo is the perfect city. The crowds that follow often are often repeat visitors. The Winter Olympics made the Nagano Perfecture an international snow destination to this day. I hope the objectors came around because Sapporo will benefit well into the future.

... The host country should be in control not an unelected corrupt cabal.

The national Olympic committees are "unelected corrupt cabals" too. I don't recall ever electing any national Olympic committee members.

Contd:

Should the city council/assembly directly be in control of Olympics?

Although Sapporo has not ruled out a bid for 2034 or later

Once a terrible idea takes hold in local government, its hard to get rid of it completely.

They should just completely walk away, the worst thing to do would be to keep the threat of future bids hanging in the air over its citizens.

Fully agree with the demonstrators: No Olympics anywhere.

The Olympics breeds corruption in every country it touches, and the IOC is as corrupt an organization as they come. It will gladly hand the games to brutal regimes with zero human rights (China, Russia, etc.) as long as there are pieces of silver in it for Bach and co.

The IOC should be disbanded and the Olympics completely reset to become a sporting competition that is 100% about sport, not corporate sponsors and money.

There was no corruption in the London Olympics or any of those in European nations and North America.

LOL,

The 2002 Olympic Winter Games bid scandal was a scandal involving allegations of bribery used to win the rights to host the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Prior to its successful bid in 1995, the city had attempted four times to secure the games, failing each time.

Sapporo's faltering 2030 Winter Olympic bid victim of Tokyo Games scandals

As it should be.

Just as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics should have also been a victim of the '98 Nagano Games scandals, where the same kinds of collusion and bribery were committed and thousands of incriminating documents "disappeared" into thin air upon investigation.

The Winter Olympics made the Nagano Perfecture an international snow destination to this day

No it didn't. International skiers only started coming to Nagano in numbers after Niseko in Hokkaido became popular. Hosting the Olympics was irrelevant.

All early promotion of Hakuba etc. was about "powder snow", not "Olympic host".

"Victim" are general citizen who daily life or health and the lives are threatened.

Sapporo 2030 is also just accomplices of wasting tax or corruption.

Present Japan politics reduce social security per person on the pretext of finance, on the other hand, repeating to waste vast taxes for self-satisfaction of politicians or benefiting handful corporations.

Only a few arrested about Tokyo Games scandal. Responsible person of related organization such as Japan Olympics Committee don't yet take responsible at all.

Most "criminals" preyed taxes have been not even arrested.

Koha: To get to Hakuba prior to the the 1998 Winter Olympics you had to go through Matsumoto and still would if not for the Olympic way from Nagano to Goryu. There be no Happo One and No Gondolas because crowds would prefer Shiga Kogan ski area. Hakuba Valley prior had only a few ski joes for the locals. It was mostly a summer destination for nature enthusiasts. It received little crowds due difficult travel prior to the Olympic way going through. So yes the Hakuba Valley benefited greatly from the Olympics or it would be another old Onsen town

underrated take!

I say, the Loot's hoovered up outta tax payers pockets. Long gone safe, outta reach.

Private offshore stash and so on. So no more noises.

All thats left now, is Dust on the round stadiums and all the other bid rigs and projects that went 1000x over any so called budget.

Other than ex-pinstripe ex-partners and ex-suit recruit execs taking the "phantom" fall for all the partners, pinstripes and execs that dont, its just a plus minus 2-3 outta 4 suspended, or -1 year in jail free card.

Sory not Sorry and gang sittin back now, just enjoying the fireworks, Silent nights…

No camera, no investigation, no questions… just quiet as church mice sittin on millions in swiss cheese.

Wonder if some gag order got around. Literally, No tv No radio no newspaper = what scandal

> Mori was in charge of the entire Japanese Olympic bid. Why didn't he get arrested?

The simple answer is that Mori, being an ex politician is part of the cabal and therefore protected.

Grifting and thievery are part and parcel of life in Japan and it is expected by the elite that a place at the overfilling trough is a birthright!

Well Hokkaido not to far from Russia and based on all the tensions I think ww3 and the Taiwan invasion would had sparked leading to devastation. Focus on world peace first before 2030 arrives.

John-san

If you look at customer numbers from the ski bubble (1990), far more people went to Hakuba to ski than before the Olympics, and way more (probably five times) than now. Hakuba has four? five? old ski resorts that existed during the 1980s and 1990s but have since closed. Happo One went from something like one million winter visitors to now under 400,000. The peak was before the Nagano to Hakuba road was widened to become the Olympic road and before the Nagano Shinkansen was built. Access has nothing to do with customer numbers, the crucial factor is people's willingness to go. There will have been massive traffic jams every day during the ski bubble, on top of long lift lines to ride the lift every time. It will have been nighmarish on weekends. People wanted to ski, so neither put them off.

Hakuba became popular with foreign skiers before Shiga Kogen because it had cheap old pensions that foreigners could buy cheaply and start promoting independently to other foreigners via the Internet. Such places also exist in Nozawa and Myoko, which is why they were next to see foreign interest. Shiga Kogen is mostly large hotels that are harder for ordinary folks to buy. With few foreign businesses doing promotion, the area has been slower to attract foreign skiers.

I'd love to hear your proposal on how to do such.
