pointing to the record 48.8 percent of women set to compete in the Games.

 48.8 percent of women

48.8% of women are not competing in the Games. The games are big enough for a quarter of the population to compete.

Surely the writer meant 48.8% of the competitors are women.

I would expect better of the AFP. Sheesh!

Tokyo Olympics is used as pretext to waste immense Tax.

If they do it, it will be on the backs of human labor trafficking and yakuza sub-contracted groups. Hope the IOC is just as worried about human rights abuses as they are meeting a timeline.

The new national stadium is set to be completed by November 2019 after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tore up the original blueprints over its eye-watering $2 billion price tag.

Subsequently stole the design, and the original designer died.

That olympic movement is such a waste of ressources and energy. Let's ban the olympics, please. At least, boycott them.

Well, I'm glad the IOC believes them. Let's hope they also acknowledge all the people who work themselves to death to accomplish it.

Are we supposed to be impressed that there will be buildings?

Mori shouldn't be in charge of 2020 yen, let alone the 2020 Olympics.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

why the hell is that guy on the right bowing like a supplicant tool?

Because most non-Japanese don't know how to bow to the "correct" level, so over-compensate, or they are given guidance but panic when doing it for the first time.

someone teach this gaijin how to bow properly

Isn't that something minimally expected? A canoeing course, say, opening after the flame has been extinguished is useless. This is not like some English homework assignment.

That man is bowing far too low, especially as that's Mori. For shame.

No more Mori will be certainly a successful Tokyo 2020 venues, Olympic Games of no politicians will bring the best world sport event, ever and ever!

The Koreans are doing that now with the Winter Olympics. No one cares about it. Might be he same here when 2020 rolls around.

And yes, Mori is to Olympics what Trump is decorum. Both failures.

Hey Coates, have you gotten the smoking ban in place yet??

If not GET to it! Don't roll over on this issue, lives DEPEND on it!

It is time the World Leaders got their heads together and came up with the idea of holding Winter and Summer Olympics in the same places to reduce the wasted expenditure of Money!

….as for "finished"….. I always wondered why the Haneda monorail (built for the '64 Olympics) terminates at Hamamatsuchō, seemed illogical and impractical… read somewhere that the reason was they ran out of time….

Well I’m excited about them coming and pretty sure Japan will do a fine job at hosting.

Though im not so sure about their tv coverage of sports that won’t include a local lad or lass.

(Ever watched the volleyball on tv? You’d never know there were two teams on the court. Lol)

anyways... here’s hoping I can get a ticket.

Go Japan!
