"Players came back onto the ice more than half an hour after the 2-0 victory over the United States on Thursday. Still in their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, they drank from bottles of champagne and cans of beer and smoked cigars."

No class- 'nough said !

Oh no, they all dranked and smoked cigars! How HORRIFIC!

Yeah, it's totally unheard of around the world besides Canada. Nobody drinks or smokes cigars after a sporting triumph. Nope, no siree.

Soccer, baseball, basketball athletes stay sober after all championship wins. Nobody would dare to touch a champagne bottle. Formula 1 drivers? Nope, don't celebrate with champagne either, cause drinking and driving is wrong!

Honestly, IOC. Who bloody cares?

Conduct Gallup polls - people will find more faults with IOC than these Canadian Girls enjoying their youth !

HumbleCat: The difference is that these are the Olympics. Other sports are played by athletes who are paid for playing. There is a BIG difference.

Whoa, I bet a good 90% of the athletes in the Olympics are paid professionals. There is no professional womens hockey, but the figure skating, skiing, mens hockey, etc etc etc are all with professional competitors.

I don't see what the big issue is. These are young men and women who have trained their whole lives for this, and when they succeed they will celebrate. That's what people do. Let them have their fun! If other competitors don't like it then they should play better, shouldn't they?

It's part of the IOC ploy to rid Women's Hockey from the Winter Olympics. Earlier in the day Jack Rogge gave a strong hint that if Canada and the US keeps on dominating then he sees no competiveness in this sport for females.

Anyways, it's great to see the gals celebrate their victory. Next time keep the 18-year old kid away from the booze! And GM Place might have some issues with them smoking inside the facilities. But heck, they just won the gold~

at least there were no phatties being smoked! Or were those Philly Blunts not cigars...? :P

I totally agree. Victory cigars should be handed out to all medal winners along with their medals and bouquets. I would love to see that! It would also be nice to see champagne bottles being popped on the medals platform while the winners dance around celebrating likes it's 1999.

Soooo..... tell us again why Kim Yu-na has so much money? And let's suppose you're not completely forgetting about endorsements and donations and rewards... if these girls aren't getting diddly squat by way of payment for their hard work, all the more reason to let loose, no? Is there some rule where you cannot celebrate if you win if you are poor, but if you're a rich Formula One driver or Stanley Cup winner you can spray champagne all over each other while you get wasted?

This is a waste of time.

LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE - IT WAS AN IMPROMPTU CELEBRATION OF WINNING! As XPOMPEY8 states - another way to get rid of Women's Hockey in the Olympics - they have the same rights as men to keep competing - other teams will get better to have a more equal playing ground.

IOC director:

“If that’s the case, that is not good,” Felli said. “It is not what we want to see. I don’t think it’s a good promotion of sport values

And Mr., what about IOC world famous bribery politics? Any comments?

On the other hand, Canadians are working hard to embarass themselves in front of TV cameras. First that unfortunate luge accident, yesterday Holland giving up the bobsled competition due to fears of another fatal accident on the same course, then Canadian women behaving like, well, drunk bears. What's next Canada?

Exactly! They should be allowed to have fun. However, I wouldn't be feeling so good knowing that only one real good team was beaten (the U.S.). On the other hand, the men's gold medal winner will have good cause to celebrate wildly as they would have conquered some damn good competition. I hope to see them doing some wild partying.

Again, IMHO women's ice hockey shouldn't be an Olympic sport. There's just no competition. It has been given the same number of years to grow (women's ice hockey has been an Olympic sport for the fourth consecutive Olympics) as softball in the Summer Games, and yet not one bit of improvement in level of competition. Since they did away with softball and baseball, it only makes sense to do the same with women's hockey.

I'm just surprised it wasn't beer and whisky!

So wait... this celebration happened on the rink after the place had been cleared of the spectators?

Who cares? Zzzzzzzzzzzzz......

I can see it now, Canada disqualified, US gets the gold. Give them a break.

God FORBID we CELEBRATE a GOLD MEDAL WIN!!!!!! How disgraceful!

Isn't there, like, some drug test or something the IOC can do on some bobsledder or skier or soemthing? I mean, really? Let these ladies have their celebration.

Beer and hockey? First time I`ve heard those two in the same sentece...

A newly minted GOLD medalist? 18 and drinking a beer? Call the cops! The IOC has proven itself to be way out of touch with reality. Vancouver.. imagine my surprise at reaching the end of the article to find it wasn't bout a dope fest.

Shame on you Canadians.

The game was over.

They won the gold.

They partied.

So what?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

they drank from bottles of champagne and cans of beer and smoked cigars.

They may be Hockey players, but are Canadians first. Every day in Canada is National Hockey Night though.
