Welcome to the Tokyo Olympics!

Rule 1. No Cheering

Rule 2. No Drinking

Rule 3. No Eating

Rule 4. No Clapping

Rule 5. No Talking

And so on..

And no hooking up in the athletics’ village! Yeah, like that’s gonna fly....

Rule 1: Don't have the Olympics. Simple.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

Oh look, the IOC know how to beat the pandemic. Who needs vaccines and ventilators and oxygen, the IOC has the answers.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

No shame, me, no more words

When will the J-Gov come to realise there is nothing in these games for Japan anymore? There is nothing to gain and everything to lose. This is all about the IOCs greed now. Tell them to stick their "playbook" where the sun doesn't shine!

No plan B, but scenarios quadrupled. lol

February 4 in Switzerland is February 5 in Japan.

Athletes and those traveling to Japan - coaches, judges, media, broadcasters, VIPS - are likely to face some self-quarantine period before they leave home.

And they will also face quarantines and restrictions to return home.

Just today the EU announced that travelers from Japan will be removed from their "white list" of allowable countries to enter due to the continued prevalence of the virus in Japan.

Waste of time and paper ... given that they probably won't happen.

Need leaders to lead and make bold decisions - when doing down the wrong past be strong enough to stop turn around and take a new path. That simply doesn't seem to happen here much.

Unveil away. Bet it has a cutesy cool Japan sheen and brought to you by Dentsu via a no-bid subcontract.

If the Olympics get cancelled they still get paid too.

Dick Pound suggested last week the "most realistic way of going ahead" was prioritizing athletes. He received strong opposition.

He’s right. Olympics priority should be the athletes. Full stop.

Unfortunately it’s all about advertising spots and bums on seats.

All cafeterias closed at 8 PM and stay home for the athletes every evening, will of course be the centre point of the strategy based on the current success of the Japan SOE in reducing the number of cases in Tokyo to below 1000 now.

Playbook, now there's a word that provokes a 20-minute furniture kicking retort.

Playbook, the must-read, ladle-filled revelatory gibberish, designed for the media obsessed politically indulgent.

The IOC receives almost 75% of its income from selling broadcast rights. Tokyo could be worth $2 billion to $3 billion in rights income, making Japan's games a financial imperative - even if it becomes a primarily television-only event.

This is the playbook.

"we know that we are facing a huge challenge, this is to create a bubble for all athletes. One thing is to create a bubble for 200 athletes in just one sport, and a very different thing is to create a bubble for thousands of athletes of different sports."

This statement is truly non compos mentis in a city, an area, with a populous the size of Tokyo.

What if COVID-19 breaks the rules?

IOC, Tokyo Olympics to unveil rule book for beating pandemic

Rule 1: Don’t have the Olympics this year

There: the shortest and most effective rule book ever.

If the games go on, let's gird our collective loins for the infection rates and death figures two weeks later. Any rage storm then?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What utter nonsense this is.

get real

6 ( +6 / -0 )

ankle tracking, daily testing, security guards, 14 day quarantine in isolation locations.

all paid for them.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

My vote is cancel them. The only ones allowed to be at the Games are the elite, politicians and pretty much the talent with a very limited "other" ordinary fan base for show and tell only. Think about it just during the recent emergency due to covid it has been the same group enjoying themselves pretty much like free reign of the town.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Postpone it until 2024 then restart the olympic cycle from there , if you continue to press forward with this ridiculous agenda you are showing too much ignorance, stupidity and belligerence .

I wonder if Abe had started taking this pandemic on head first at the start instead of trying to paint a pretty picture so the olympics could go on as planned would things be how they are now?

I get it though... it was just too late.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The Olympics will not be able to be held in Japan in 2024 because I think the electorate would vote out the LDP if they tried to do that.

No, it’s because Paris are holding the Games in 2024.

If the rule book include social distancing, then forget it. Most people here can't think for themselves unless they're ordered to social distance. Having marks on the ground and signs everyone doesn't help.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Having marks on the ground and signs everyone doesn't help.

Everyone ignores them, I try to stay 2 metres from the person in front of me I the supermarket queue, but almost always get some idiot tutting and pushing their trolley right up behind me or pushing in front as they thought the space I left was for them.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So the IOC basically admitted they don't care about spectators, or local people, because they only want to sell the TV rights. Yeah, very good playbook. They also will not care much about what happens to the athletes and other persons involved after the Games have finished. Enough, just burry this farce already. Japan hasn't even started to vaccinate their citizens!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This is really a comedy movie being filmed now, right?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The virus is not spreading due to sporting events. It is spreading via bars and other social events where people are face to face for long periods of time.

U.S. football had fans this past year. People will be fine with limited attendance, masks, etc.

Throw in vaccines for many in attendance and negative tests for everyone else and the risks should be lowered greatly compared to where we are now.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Sounds good, except for the fact that almost everyone who catches it has no idea how or where they caught it, including people who don't go to restaurants, bars or events of any kind.

IOC, Tokyo Olympics to unveil rule book for beating pandemic ****Is this a new medal category?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Pure insanity!!

And I find it amazing that the idiots at the IOC seem to NOT realize that there will be 10s of thousands of locals(foreigners as well) that will be part of the games if they proceed!!!

HOW THE HELL is the IOC going to keep these people in some BUBBLE........News Flash!! There is NO WAY they can.......

Once upon a time there was a pandemic...

The end.

One word missing from this entire discussion: "volunteers"

One year ago, Tokyo began to realise that their generally excellent transportation system could not handle the Olympic logistics. Then, as one of the volunteers, on which the entire event depended, I started training, and after that I was offered a position as, basically, an unpaid taxi driver. They even asked me if I had my own car. I thought about the risks of an accident versus the rewards (zero), and declined.

This year they have not even asked the volunteers to schedule the training yet. Would I accept the added risk of infection? Sorry, I was really excited about the Olympics and Paralympics 2020, but in 2021 I would prefer just to stay alive.

A major unanswered questions involves fans. How many fans will be allowed into venues? Will fans from abroad be permitted?

.... or would fans even come? Think about it. In most countries (and most airlines) require you get tested first which means subjecting yourself to having a cotton swab jabbed up your nose to where it touches your brain (joy!) then spending lots of $$$ for the flight (for us it's a good 12-14 hour plane ride - fun!), then when you get there the entire country closes by 8p and you'll be treated to only seeing less than 10% of countries competing - if that many at all. Sounds like the ideal Summer Vacation! Sign me Expedia!

Oh, and good luck with enforcing foreigners to wear a mask the entire time! Have fun with that...

Seriously, I can't believe the IOC is still thinking that a 2021 Summer Olympic is going to happen! I think a better use of the venue would be to use it to help administer the vaccine. It's very spacious, outdoors, and can hold a lot of people comfortably rather than trying to jam them into clinics and hospitals. In an earlier article, they were looking for 10,000(?) Medical people for the Olympics? I say recruit these Medical people an repurpose them to assist with the vaccination. That to me would be a much better plan and use of their time.
