If it's so great, make IOC pay for it.

Olympics wayyyy past their use-by date… an obscenity now…

Of course, every city that has hosted the games, with the expectation of LA,1984 has come away substantially out of pocket. Our political elite adorned with a peculiar, financially unhinged pair of rose tinted glasses never seem to fully comprehend past economic indicators. The fact that the costs involved never stack up to promises for tourism, publicity and the so called jobs and investment factor for the local economy....... inevitably, Tokyo's hard pressed tax payers will have to pick up a substantial proportion of what amounts to an eye watering huge bill.

Abe san cabinet and government, like so many governments before failed to weigh up or quantify the economic advantages to disadvantages of such a costly sporting event. Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike has a mandate and yes a duty to substantially rail in the costs. If it means using existing sporting infrastructure, and scaling back on the wow factor, the IOC must except this flexible approach. The language and tone that implies unwavering commitment has to be consigned to a past era that failed to call a halt to sporting events of this nature that encouraged a carte blanche attitude to reckless monetary mismanagement.

Who cares what these corrupt officials say

No one forced Tokyo to host the games. Tokyo wanted them, and in the process underbid and over promised. That is not the IOC's problem.

If the citizens are unhappy, their recourse is with the decision makers in Tokyo.

Tokyo agreed to hold the Olympics and should complete them as promised.

“We want to introduce the spirit of ‘what a waste,’ to organising the Games,” Koike said.

Too late: already introduced and achieved by the 2020 JOC.

I'll bet 10,000 yen that Tokyo will get a bailout from the national government (all Japanese taxpayers) to cover the huge loss.

Sounds like this was the IOC giving Japan an opportunity to back out.

No European country has the amount of citizens like Asean countries have. Still after being on your own as is Africa what do you develop? Infra?

domyoidi - If Tokyo people vote to hold the Olympics, then they alone should have to pay an extra tax to pay for it all with no bailout from using money from everyone else in Japan.

The funds are coming from Tokyo. That(s why they don't have enough money to complete the BS aspirations of the great leader Abe in his Olympic bid.

Dear Thomas Bach, I understand what is at stake here. Please look at the link and your enormous compensation. Thank You

IOC chief Thomas Bach

I think the headline should be:

IOC Urges Unwavering Committment by Olympic Games' Hosts to Give Them Money.

In Europe , Hamburg citizens voted no , then who wants spectacle......about some billion.. is it fast enough to be enough

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It's time for Japanese and people from all countries and cities to resist this theft. If Tokyo people vote to hold the Olympics, then they alone should have to pay an extra tax to pay for it all with no bailout from using money from everyone else in Japan.

There should be a referendum voted on by the people of a city bidding for the Olympics to approve it first.

Cities around the world look at any Olympic spending fiasco and only see that they want nothing to do with it in the future. Only dictators, vain leaders, or vain cities even think they need such a colossal waste that had nothing to do with the people they are supposed to be serving. Instead they serve themselves. Ugh

Happy my city said No Way. I'm happy yours did too

“We want to introduce the spirit of ‘what a waste,’ to organising the Games,” Koike said.

Hahaha, I love the way this translated.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

“Organising the Olympic Games is an intensive process that requires creativity, discipline and collaboration with many people and stakeholders,” he said. “Most importantly, it requires unwavering commitment.”

So, I guess Japan's campaign of lies, deceit, outright BS and backpeddling was not really the correct approach.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Billions that's why some cities don't want the Olympics.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Yeah, undying devotion to spending other peoples money!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

30 billion? My goodness screw the Olympics and help the people. What a waste.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

So corruption, lies, massive earthquakes and radiation aren't factors?

Tokyo and other upcoming Olympic host cities must make an “unwavering commitment” to achieving a successful Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) urged on Monday, as cost overruns plague the runup to Tokyo’s 2020 event.

Or what? The IOC better start to realize that fewer and fewer countries will be able to host the games without cutting overall costs.

IOC urges unwavering commitment by Olympic Games' hosts.......NO! absolutely not, Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike answers to people, the electorate, ultimately through the Tokyo metropolitan government. Certainly not the conceited self important, arrogant IOC.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Haha... Urges huh. Well pay up then

3 ( +4 / -1 )

IOC wants their coffers filled. Tokyo wants the notoriety. The losers? tax-paying citizens. I honestly think that Olympics games should be held in a neutral location, every--single---time. Perhaps build an Island in the middle of the ocean somewhere.. I hear the Chinese are experts at it. But this would take away from the IOC reaping ridiculous profits, at the expense of the middle class, and governments strutting their stuff to the rest of the world. Bummer.

I urge a marvelous boycott.
