Who've you been talking to? All the English people I know are all too aware of what a hopeless shower of misfits and losers we produce tournament after tournament. We're really not very good, and we know we're not, as the chant (more or less) goes. And I speak as a Coventry City fan, so I've plenty of experience in the football misery market.
But hey, it's the cricket season, right? :)

Italy dominated the game, hit the woodwork 2 or 3 times, scored (albeit offside). England's best chance to score was the penalty shootout. Even if we had of won, the Germans would have turned us over easily in the semis. I do like Roy Hodgson though and think he should be judged after the world cup.

I take it that 'his side' were Italy..?
Exactly what planet is Hodgson on?? Gone out without being beaten? That's funny, England will be back home when Italy line up in the semi-final. And we've got him until the next world cup..!

Apart from a decent first half, England were absolutely shocking. If somehow they had won the penalty shootout it would have been the greatest robbery in history. Hodgson brought off two of the better players (especially Welbeck) and Carroll was a disgrace. Rooney was no better. Germany would have wiped the floor with England with a performance like that.

It's just the natural order of things...England send a team into a tournament and they come home having lost on penalties. cough cough...am I choking on something?

Not sure what all the fervor is about. England has been a middle of the pack team for decades. If by some chance they would have won on PKs the semi-final would have really hurt them. Deutschland would have spanked them so bad that they probably wouldn't allow their Olympic team into the UK. Not sure what game a lot of you watched, but Italy controlled that game and were quite unlucky.

Reminds me of that story about the little boy who used to get beaten by his parents, and when the judge asked the boy who he'd like to care of him, he said the england team, the judge asked why's that little boy, and he replied because the england team dont beat anyone.

when Jordan Henderson is brought on for Scott Parker.. you have to ask yourself "Is this the best that England can offer?"
England definitely lack creativity in the midfield and why on earth were they giving Pirlo so much time on the ball???
TigersTokyoDome
Exactly. Forget English prima donna overpaid footballers earning 100,000 pounds a week. Support British athletes at the Olympics who do actually beat the rest of the world at something.

Football or Soccer was an English invention. Sadly England national team was an embrassment for nation. Rooney, Beckham, Gerrad are overpaid and under performers. They have never performed well for international level. Newer and fresher generation need to be replaced. The old, unfit and under achievers needed to be retired from representing the birth place of football.
. Back in 1966, players were paid many times smaller than now. However they performed well and gained respect. Money can not buy goals.

Beckham was a world class player who put England into the World Cup Finals in Japan. When you say he made a hash of things I take it you mean the straight red card after the Argentinian went down like he had been shot after a little flick of the foot and after standing on Beckham (which the refereee just so happened to miss even though he didn't miss Beckham's little flick).
That's funny, as the game finished 4-2 which by my calculations means that the Germans are still a goal down even if the on-the-line goal was disallowed.....

It should be no surprise whatsoever to anyone that England hardly ever progress past the QFs of any tournament when the development of young players is based more on physical athleticism than technique. It should be more of a surprise that we even get to the quarters in the first place.

LOVE that JT runs a huge article on this but has ignored so many of the other games.
England losing on PK. Surprise, surprise....

i want spain to win!!! xD

@Probie England were hardly scintillating under Capello. Give Hodgson a chance. One month preparation and he organised the team well - although they lacked the quality to hurt a quality side like Italy ( who couldn't break then down in 120 mins ). Let's judge him after the next world cup.

Our readers live all over the world and are interested in the Euro 2012 tournament.

Yeah, and so he will be. Like all the others. Lose a few games, then out. The FA will be looking for the the next ex England manager right after the world cup. The only way he'd stay, would be if England won the world cup. Which won't happen.
If you didn't want to know the score, you shouldn't have even gone online at all.

Tough luck England - tough luck Woy Hodgson. I reckon them poms had better start practising penalties one of these days - they always seem to come undone in them! Germany for the Cup IMO.

Wayne Rooney was clearly unfit and should have either started on the bench or got subbed after 60 min. Andy Carrol put in a typical showing in that he lumberred after the ball, committed a number of fouls and offered little in the way of a threat.
And as for Ashley Young - I didn't even realise he was playing until he missed the penalty.
calm down
Blame it all on the hand of God..but I'd be very surprised if they aren't hugely successful in the coming Olympics

Its no fun bashing the English national team any longer. Years of that poof Beckham making a hash of the team has drained it of any respect at all. Gerrard was once the only English player of merit but he is over the hill now.
Regarding 1966, those of you that know your WC history know that England won on a non-goal. Without a linesmans gift England would have nothing at all to speak of at the international level. Nothing. Germany of course has gone on to win the WC twice since then.

England havent won anything in football since 1966 but they still think they are champions, get over yourselves you never were any good and never will be, biggest underachievers on the world of sports the english.
Jimizo
@Exportexpert Hang on - 'you never were any good'. You just mentioned 1966. Were they any good then? Roy did a decent job given his preparation time. We need to change style and finally understand that we need to retain possession better. Carroll should not play for England - he is everything that is wrong with our approach.

If the FA thought that Hodgeson would be the man to get some silverware for the first time in a long time, I'd love some of whatever they were smoking. Redknapp would have been just as bad, if not worse. Both are second-rate managers. They should have kept Capello. Thank you to the idiots who kept saying "The England team should have an English manager!" for ending any chances the team might have had. Because under Hodgeson, they'll win nothing and play boring. Same old England.
Overall a typical England performance. Play like you can't be bothered, then lose on penalties.
Nice to see the mediocrity level is back to normal.
TigersTokyoDome
Because the English football association blundered yet again by selecting Hodgson as manager after they let Capello go just before this tournament, they now have a 'brand new' manager already tainted with a poor tournament performance and only a month into his new job. They should have offered a temporary summer contract to Redknapp or Hodgson and then made a decision on the full time role after this tournament. And they shouldn't have let Capello go so easily until after the Euros, seeing as he got us there in the first place.

DEAR JT
If I wanted to know the football scores, I'd check the BBC or such website which has some connection to the competition in EUROPE....Japan Today - Japan news and discussion.....why the sudden interest in reporting the football scores? Avoided the BBC all day for the reason of waiting to watch the game tonight after work. Thanks for spoiling that. Gurrrrrrrr!!!!
