It's coming, Rome!

Forza Azzuri!

Bloddy hell, another PK loss. Fair play to Italy, they probably deserved it on the day.

Absolutely gutted for all the folks back home. Great tournament though, hope we can recover and improve for the WC next year when it really will be coming home!

What a redemption!

From not even qualifying to the 2018 World Cup to the darkest days of Covid-19 to become champions of Europe again since 1968

(England once again still can't hit penalties if their life depended on it)

Glad to see it’s coming to Rome. Apparently a lot of poor losers booing an injured player.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Henderson who has scored a p.k in a champions league final was subbed out for sancho, who missed.

And a 19 year old taking the deciding p.k?

9 ( +9 / -0 )

A great game and the two sides were well matched.

Congrats to Italy

Where’s a laser pen when you need one, eh?

Oh well. On behalf of Denmark “ha ha” and on behalf of the UK Olympic diving team “now you don’t need Sterling for the time being, can we borrow him?”

And all those fans trying to force their way into the stadium without tickets…to lose on a penalty shootout. The irony is beautiful.

Italy the better side. Mancini’s done some job there.

Rashford’s pen training ground knockabout stuff. Practice blasting them in the corner. Sterling didn’t fancy one? He’s a more senior member of the squad than Sancho or Saka.

Anyway, great tournament. Enjoyed that.

I got a result on the full time score (draw).

Italy deserve the win. Not into penalties.

The second half England when shopping. They sat on the first half lead. I made a full English for 14 people, half time.

The best team won on the day. Great tournament.

Being raised a hockey fan, it seems to be pathetic to me that so many of soccer's greatest, most historic results come as a result of PKs, which aren't much better than a lottery draw.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

I was there.

Italy played better.

I woke up at 4:00AM many nights for a month to watch Italy, but now feels great!

I thought the penalties mirrored the game, England getting into a good position and then not capitalising on it. Though England led, Italy looked likely to score for about twenty minutes before it happened. With five subs allowed in regular time and a further one in extra time, I think England should have been more proactive sooner. Italy have an ageing defence, and some pace to threaten them on the counter would have helped stem the tide, some of which was from subs Italy had brought on themselves.

England's goal came from players running beyond Kane, but that didn't happen much afterward. Until Phillips in extra time, I don't think England had an attempt on or off goal from a forward or midfielder.

A disappointing end to a highly enjoyable tournament.

Roberto Mancini gave us the Premier League's greatest moment, and now he's taken Italy from their nadir to Champions of Europe. Congratulations to him and Italy. Let's hope England can lift themselves for the World Cup next year.

England still no where in sports Great to see !!!

1 ( +7 / -6 )

Someone explain to an American...how is 1-1 a win for either side?

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Oh dear. Contrary to what we've been told non-stop, it won't be coming home. Arrivederci.

God I hope those Italian fans at Wembley had their getaway cars ready.

Now, let's deal with the fall-out - an increase in infections.

England can keep on waiting for a big tournament victory. They really don't deserve to win when you look at the idiotic fans who are violent, arrogant, and rude. It may be a small percentage but they still do damage and destroy the atmosphere for so many people inside and outside the stadium. Well done Italy!

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Someone explain to an American...how is 1-1 a win for either side?

It was 1-1 after extra time (aka overtime). Then they went on to a shoot out, where it ended at 3-2.

...I think.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

And it just had to be because of a penalty shootout.

Why let Saka, one fo the youngest players ever, take a penalty kick so late is incredible.

And the UK hooligans showed their colors by booing Italy's national anthem. Disgraceful.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Ok Footy ....

Match 90 minutes. If both team fail to score, or are level. Extra time 30 minutes.

Then  penalty shoot-out...... 10.97 meters or 36 feet away from the goal. There are five shots per team.

Then sudden death........ohhhhhhhhh

If you want to go deep.....

Remember when inviting friends in around in double figures they could empty your fridge.

Also whilst hosting cooking this that and the other, you could end up missing the match

And the UK hooligans showed their colors by booing Italy's national anthem. Disgraceful.

It was predictable, lets be honest. At least no lasers this time which is a plus. It was a good match played fairly.

I'm just hoping and praying Italian fans and families are not being attacked in London in the aftermath. Hope they made it to their homes to safety.

Amazing scenes of partying on the streets of Roma and at the Collisseum just coming in now!

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Millions of non-English people thank Italy for winning that!

England has the worse fans and an awful playing style

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Someone explain to an American...how is 1-1 a win for either side?

It counts as a draw as far as official FIFA records go. But for a tournament, there has to be a winner.

When a push came to a shove, bums puckered.

What is that Queen track Under Pressure with David Bowie, me thinks.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Gutless and mentally weak, they lost their nerve and choked.

They were also very young though, and barely touched the ball before having to kick a PK in the final of a major tournament at home. Not complaining since I was cheering for Italy, but not sure if that was the best choice.

Now, let's deal with the fall-out - an increase in infections.

"The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all." - Richard Branson

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Apparently Turkish fans are to blame for the English fans being terrible losers.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

The best team won so there's no room for excuses, but just as a word to the wise: the English squad must try harder - spending a lot more time and effort fixing their amateur-hour shootouts, like aiming the ball past the goalie and putting it into the back of the net might be advisable strategic planning for future competitions.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

You say "very young", I say "fast and athletic". You say "barely touched the ball", I say "fresh legs yet to be depleted from 120 minutes of game play". The whole team was playing in their first final in an England shirt.

Yeh, that would be good if they came on to play, but they came on in the last minute just for the penalties, even replacing Henderson who was a sub himself. True they were all playing their first final but the veterans just looked on as the young boys took crucial PKs. I would like to think Southgate would have chosen them if they threw their name in the hat.

England lost because they surrendered the pitch to the Italian midfield from around the 30 minute mark. Southgate was desperately slow to make changes even though Stevie Wonder could see what was coming.

Yeh but even the last time they met in the Euros Italy dominated possession against England, when they were still regarded as a defensive team. So I could've seen that coming well before the match. Southgate definitely needed a plan B, especially with the offensive talent he had on the bench.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Gutless and mentally weak, they lost their nerve and choked.

I'm not sure they were gutless. They put their hands up when the managaer asked who wants to take a pen. That takes some courage for a young fellow and I admire them for wanting to do it.

When the moment came, they just weren't good enough, tough enough or lucky enough.

I'm afraid these three black players are going to get an awful lot of racist abuse on their instatwittertubes over the coming hours from the cro-magnon element of the English fans.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The way to choose penalty takers is to wait until the end of the game and ask the players.. who feels good about it. Having confidence after having a good game is way more important than how many you scored in training. Asking two players who barely played in the tournament if they wanna come on and take a pen with their first touch is stupid because they're never gonna say no as its their one chance to appear in the final, they will say yeah no matter how shaky they are about it. That was Southgate's second mistake. First mistake was telling them to defend it out if they got one nil up.

Sickening footage just coming in now on Twitter showing groups of furious England fans attacking, bashing and kicking random people on the ground (some Asians singled out) as they try to leave Wembley stadium.

There will be an investigation into this. UEFA will surely charge England. Where were the security or police?

Why are some people so violent and angry after losing? Unbelievable. Many "fans" deserve a long stint in prison.

While some of England's biggest names, including Southgate, Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire, were noticeable exceptions, most of England's stars immediately removed their medals and carried them in their hands in an act some have interpreted as disrespectful to their opposition.

In the eyes of some, the way the team conducted itself throughout the tournament doesn't excuse the surprising act of disrespect during the medal ceremony.

From other news on the match, but recall the same thing when the english rugby team got beaten in the rugby world cup by S.A. really the english are petulant brats and they show it every chance,. glad they failed once again in their chosen sport deserved too !

Not random people, Italian fans. Kicked in the head on the ground by middle aged Englishmen.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

The English manager was the most clueless football manager I've seen in my life. Italy should award him a medal

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Congratulations Italy!! This is a good lesson for English pride!

Mate, next to nobody around the world cares about rugby.

Someone was bleating on about ice-hockey before.

It was a special evening for Gli Azzurri footballers and fans. The Italians sang their song with great unction, fought tooth and nail to cancel the second minute strike by Luke Shaw, defended well, took their penalty kicks with better precision, and were rewarded for their efforts. Italian players, coaching staff, and fans showed they were on a special mission. It was a nice celebration of good football. Congrats to Italy and England. Well played.

There is a lot of rivalry and jealousy in football, not least here in Scotland, and it can sometimes get ugly. So it was nice to read this twitter post from a senior Scottish National Party politician, Humza Yousaf (below). It was mainly in response to the racist abuse, but he mentioned the football too. I'd like to think most people in Scotland share his view.

"If you're still wondering why English players felt the need to take the knee

Solidarity to the players facing racist abuse online, simply unacceptable

Squad can hold their heads up high, took a world class Italian team right to the wire, not a bad place to be before Qatar 2022"

Did't you watch the videos of the english beating and kicking the italian fans as they tried to leave the stadium? Typical english attitude to everything, they all think they are entitled to the throne, when in fact everyone else knows they should have been thrown centuries ago...........................

0 ( +3 / -3 )

@syzyguy ahah that must be the reason why football is the most popular sport in practically every country except a couple of them (where they consider things like golf and baseball, where competitors can have a big belly and actually use belts to hold their trousers, sports).

Penalties are anything but a chance game., rather a chess+boxing moment. They tried for a bit ‘golden goals’ ending the match when one of the teams would score during extra time and it sucked the life out of football.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Italy did a great job of shutting down England after the first goal.

Unfortunately, the game finished in penalty kicks, which kind of cheapens the victory. The teams should keep playing overtime until one team scores.

They play as a team, and then the result is determined by an individual achievement?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Politics and sport and the politics that suffocates the beautiful game.

Then smear with a rather vile form of racist toxic social media blame game.

Where is all of this heading?

Then kick in accusations of racism by fans?
