During the ceremony at a Tokyo hotel, a limited number of athletes and officials, including Chef de Mission Junichi Kawai, sat apart from each other as a precaution against the virus.

Though in the photo there are no measures in place. Agree with “Blue” - why even bother?

rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in Tokyo and other parts of the country.

That even won't help current rapid increase COVID-19 cases.

Another super spreader event for the country.

Another Gold Metal disaster when infection rates are already at 5000 per day in Tokyo.

theres no proof of that,

On the contrary, the Olympic turned out to be so popular that it encouraged people to STAY HOME to watch their TVs. As a result, for example, the usage of commuter trains dropped during the Olympic Events.

Yeah the country is sinking in disaster but the Paralympics must be a success.

Be interesting to see what happens, in terms of public support, if Japan isn't as successful with these games as it was in the main games.

The large number of medals won in the regular games seemed to have the effect the government wanted: the easily-distracted peasantry dutifully swooned over the nice shiny medals and temporarily forgot about the fact that their government was making a complete hash of their Covid strategy. It was probably more than enough to guarantee another LDP landslide later this year.

But if the paralympics don't work out the same way, wonder if there will be a backlash?

Watching the Tokyo olympics made me want to go back to Japan even more. And my friends who have never been to Japan are very interested in visiting Japan. So I'm pretty confident that in the long run the games will be beneficial, because of covid it might take longer to see the results. I know here in Vancouver we're still seeing the benefits from the 2010 Winter Olympics.

I ain't watching this one either.

It was not the fault of the Olympics, it is the people who are relaxing themselves because there are vaccinations, infections related to olympics was just a few hundreds, inform better..

Right. Classic argument and shifting the blame and blaming others. Citizens are not primarily responsible for this. You're right, neither is the Olympics. It is the fault of an incompetent government that does not know what to do, issues nonsensical and contradictory measures and only confuses the citizens. And, as we know, few people here think for themselves, they usually need to be told from above. A deus ex machina.

Or the popular, opposing argument pushed by a certain party is that the government can't demand anything, force anything, and that it's every man for himself.

Leave the drama, Japan is progressing well in the vaccination, this will improve soon..

We've been hearing this for a long time, that Japan is doing well in vaccinations, that it's going to get better soon. And when exactly is that soon? For the last year and a half, the classic argument has been "but wait, it will get better soon". But so far, nothing is getting better. Not even the promised acceleration of vaccinations a few months ago. Still just empty promises and a few individuals here repeating the same thing over and over again. It almost feels like one person is on multiple accounts. So, when is that "soon"? I guess more than year and half?

Japan, on the other hand, needs people who care about others, people who care about Japan. But people like you and people with these arguments don't care about Japan. Politicians certainly don't care about Japan and the welfare of our citizens. They only care about money and they don't even hide it. And such propaganda will not change the situation.

Excuse me while my mind is more focused on the pandemic.

You're liable to lose it like that.

I will first say I do not think the Olympics or Paralympics are directly connected to the spread of the virus.

But when the government on one hand tells the population to stay home don't have big gatherings but then hold 2 mass events like these it send a very mixed and difficult to believe message to the population.

It is like your parents feeding you kale, tofu, juice every meal and telling you fat, sugar, are not good for you but at the other end of the table they and their friends are eating T-bone steaks, butter mashed potatoes, washed down with sweet soda drinks, followed by a black Forest chocolate cake dessert every night.

Would you take them seriously?

You're wasting your time.

These guys decided months ago with no evidence and will never change their stance, regardless of the facts.

Even Sweden does not sponsor these sports events using public money. Why does Japan?

I know mate,

they’ve been repeating the same old rhetoric for 18 months now. It’s the highlight of their day.

Meanwhile, in the real world far away from a shiny Dentsu PR event : maskless kids and adults lumped together in close proximity at yet another pointless ceremony.

This is just pitiful. Poor kids, let's hope none of them catch the virus....

.... just like everywhere else.... most people are pretty good people, but innocents really..... baubles, fireworks, circuses (5-ringed variety in this case)....

People are going to stay home to watch disabled people in wheelchairs playing basketball or the blind playing soccer.... Sorry but the viewing figures from previous events would seem to suggest otherwise.

we have already known the fact that our govermnet is not so capable to hold a big event like Olympic without triggering added spread of the virus. but now we're opening an another big event again! i think that the government and the relative organizations are overconfident about it.

Transition of power was carried out so quickly without bloodsheds. President Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan safely. Some say there must have been some deal between them.

when you say ‘we’, you mean you, right ?

Do you have proof to back up your ‘fact’ ?

As if the Olympics weren't bad enough. This could be worse for some of these athletes.

"All of the athletes challenging their limits and overcoming barriers will move people around the world and encourage them." - Well said. Wishing all athletes, their mentors, and organizers happy and healthy times at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

No lesson learned from July 23 as cases rise. Challenging not only the games but health. There are new variants. I read news one from the Olympics. I wonder what name will they call it.
