It was an exceptional match. As in they made exceptions to the border control rules (the exceptions that they cannot make for families reuniting, workers, students who would all happily quarantine). By role in the squad, country they returned from, and corresponding quarantine they skipped:

Itakura (Germany, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Endo (Germany, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Ito (Belgium, 10 days home quarantine)

Tanaka (Germany, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Morita (Portugal, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Minamino (UK, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Maeda (UK, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Kubo (Spain, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Haraguchi (Germany, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Nakayama (Netherlands, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Doan (Netherlands, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Didn’t play:

Schmidt (Belgium, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Shibasaki (Spain, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Ueda (France, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

Kawashima (France, 6 days at government designated facility + 4 days home quarantine)

And of course, the full China national team.

Really good, business-like performance from Samurai Blue. Moriyasu-san is doing fine, and sure seems to have quietened those boo boys calling for his head just last year. Samurai defense is incredibly mean.

With Kyogo returning from injury hopefully soon, he will be a great addition to the Samurai strike force. They should have some highly fancied Euro and Sth Americans eyeing them nervously in Qatar!

Still don't understand why that arm hit was a penalty. Seems overly harsh.

But no question about Ito's head shot.

Uh, what about the most successful national team, Nadeshiko, currently wending their way thru the Asian Cup? Not a word. A tournament they won twice in a row and are defending champions.

One rule for the footballers regarding quarantine, one rule for anyone else trying to enter Japan. Disgusting.

Congratulations to gaffer Hajime Moriyasu and his Samurai Blue. Well played Japan.

Did they play yesterday?

I was told (right here) Japan was already eliminated when they lost the first match.

"Experts" where are ya?

The Moriyasu Out! banners unfurled in Saitama and Yokohama just months ago seem to have been put away. For now.

Hopefully the hateful English mentality of calling for a managers head every time a team loses a few never takes root in Japan.

hateful English mentality

I don't think this is unique to the English, @fighto! , but I get your point.
