Coach should have put a pad lock around his skate blades.

titaniumdioxide: " Go back to my old comments when he won the Olympics gold. I was praising his artistry, style, talent and grace on ice especially in the short program where he broke the world record and reached more than the 100 point barrier. Why would I praise him for falling 5 times in the full skates?"

Because you were praising him for the result despite the injuries and suggesting he's a warrior for going on anyway, etc. You say it was sarcasm (or rather, "irony"), and if that's the case then my bad, but it didn't seem that way to me. It sounded like you were praising his 'gaman' spirit or something.

CraigHicks: "Hanyu can't be blamed - he had to do it once the doctors said he was OK."

No he did not, and hence Orser saying it was no time to be a hero. Pride put him out there, and that is all, and now the same pride may have contributed to him being out for at least three weeks.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Tough situation they were all in, this kid showed a lot a of heart. I will refrain to say anything negative about the rest.

Yeah - as i said on another post - in the enlightened world of 21c sports, head injuries are put to a concussion evaluation that will take time. Obviously he would have failed any real sports doctors analysis. (he fell 5 times in performance). Also he had a sprained ankle. Did they miss that one??? Good checking!

And it is not the athletes call.

Hanyu, also the world title holder, needed stitches in his jaw and staples to close wounds in his head, yet he was cleared by doctors to skate in the free routine

Hanyu was diagnosed with cranial bruising on Monday following a medical.

Hanyu can't be blamed - he had to do it once the doctors said he was OK.

And the doctor(s) had to give the green light since Hanyu said he was OK and wanted to skate .... NOT! Easy to see how the doctor(s) could make that mistake, though. (/hypothetical scenario)

Hanyu, also the world title holder, needed stitches in his jaw and staples to close wounds in his head, yet he was cleared by doctors to skate in the free routine despite coach Brian Orser warning him it was “no time to be a hero.”

Don't just lay the blame of stupidity on Hanyu. It was as much - if not more - Brian Orser's fault that he went back onto the ice.

Ehh... no. It was Hanyu's decision, not Orser's to make. Doctors medically cleared him to skate. This wasn't an uninformed coach deciding he should go back out and skate - it was the skater himself. In fact the article makes of point of the coach telling him there's no need to be a hero about it. HANYU decided to skate anyway and captured the Silver medal.

What sort of medical training do these "former Olympians" have to state that "he could have died"? Even trained medical doctors won't make such an irresponsible statement if they haven't personally examined the patient. Could he have died? Sure! We ALL can die at any minute for any reason. Some former sports athlete making a medical diagnosis over the internet has about as much validity as a 300 yen coin.

YubaruNOV. 10, 2014 - 08:48PM JST Congratulation on that silver. A true warrior. Show must go on. I sincerely hope that this was written with as much sarcasm that can be had in a forum such as this, however if you were being sincere, you really need to have a long discussion with people who participate in sports and are familiar with problems associated with head injuries. He fell 5 times in his routine, which says to me, that he wasn't in his right mind, and his coaches and the skating federation should either be heavily fined or fired for putting him at risk.

You guess it! It was irony. His coach told Mr. Hanyu, "no time to be a hero" but he went in the rink without hesitation, turning himself into some kind of a warrior. I'd say a Kamikazee warrior (suicidal one). He's an Olympic champion and the reigning world champ. It's not a worth gambling your life for something you've already gained. It was a little greed and selfishness in his part. Hope he recovers soon.

smithinjapanNOV. 10, 2014 - 11:04PM JST titaniumdioxide: "Congratulation on that silver. A true warrior. Show must go on." And it's that kind of attitude -- and it's always people who say this who put OTHERS in danger and with no danger to themselves -- that could literally have gotten him killed. But then, again with that attitude, you'd probably say he was a 'true samurai' if he died. Shame on you. TrevorPeace1: "Brian Orser's fault that he went back onto the ice." Orser urged him not to go on, actually. He was cleared by doctors, so Orser could not force him not to skate if Hanyu insisted. This is not Hanyu's fault, either, it's the doctors' and ultimately the JSF.

Chill and relax. You know me than any posters do. Go back to my old comments when he won the Olympics gold. I was praising his artistry, style, talent and grace on ice especially in the short program where he broke the world record and reached more than the 100 point barrier. Why would I praise him for falling 5 times in the full skates? It's such a heart-wrecking moment when you see someone injured keeps on falling. It's like a boxing death match.

I sincerely hope the officials responsible are punished. How stupid and selfish these officials are never ceases to amaze me. Hanyu should never have been allowed to skate again. Wait for the typical vile, insincere and meaningless apologies tomorrow.

The Mrs & I were talking about all this, it was certainly VERY risky behavior going ahead with his skate after that collision, heads need to roll, people need to be fired, canned, kicked outta dodge.

He should have been resting in hospital under 24hr care, cat scans & all that, he got his noodle HAMMERED good, watching him fall all over the ice during his routine......hopefully now he is getting the rest & attention he needs & that nothing happens, the brain is a delicate piece of organ!

I mean he received the equivalent of a sucker punch from Mohamed Ali! He should have been in bed!

He should not have been allowed to skate. Same goes for Yu Han. Those young men could have very seriously injured. They should have been put in a hospital, not the rink.
