I will admit, I was wiping tears from my face when Naomi-chan held the famous US Open trophy. Now, fight for the Gold in Tokyo 2020, Naomi-chan!!!

Now that she has reached the age of twenty she will have to decide if she wants to be Japanese or not, but considering she only live here until she was three, I think that makes her more American than Japanese.

It is actually 22. By law she need to decide between Japan and US citizenship. However, many people in Japan do not do this and still hold on to their dual citizenship. However, she is famous now and I do not think she can avoid the hard decision.

its not difficult she was born Japanese citizen , she can choose J citizenship, J government has no jurisdiction over other countries nationalities and they know it, which is why they do nothing.

I’m a American and I’m so proud of Naomi Osaka’s accomplishment! She played an outstanding match and should hold her head high. Please note, the NYC fans boos were directed at the power grab umpire who stoled the true match from Naomi and Serena. Naomi is a very Beautiful Woman who reflects her background. From now on I’m fan of Naomi and will only wish her best in her future tennis career.

Its a shame people tend to focus on her being Japanese or not, rather than her achievement.

Just such a shame that Williams tried to turn the whole thing into the Serena show. Disgraceful behaviour from both her and the home crowd who were obviously hoping for a an American victory. She was fined last time she did this lets hope this time its bigger and that it reminds her that sport is all about fair play and not tantrums when you don't have it go your way ! 

Naomi deserved this in all its glory yet has had that once in a lifetime moment snatched form her by a petulant sore looser who knows her carer is on the wane!

True, tennis is one of the world's most individualistic and cosmopolitan sports, if not THE most. A player's passport has nothing to do with their success. Although in Osaka's case, it should be pointed out her residency in America was key, since that is where she learned and developed her craft.

NY crowds are notorious for unruly behaviour as well as famous for their passion. I recall many years ago when an Australian player exited mid-match with a torn rotator cuff and they booed the shyte out of him. That's NY.

And their most favourite daughter in sporting history - born & bred NYorker Serena Williams - at the age of 36 came back from giving birth 1 year to the day to her first child with life threatening complications, to arrive once again on the hallowed ground of Arthur Ashe stadium for possibly the last US final of her career. In such a scenario emotions run high, very high.

Naomi was a great champion today, and she may even chase down the 24(?) grand slams of Serena, possibly the GOAT. I hope so.

But please spare the us the whines and cries of foul unfair play.

I saw Osaka's post match interview. She was very charming and gracious - shy, but with a glint of humor. A true champion. Serena...whatever... she lost it - but that's hardly a first in pro tennis. The crowd, however, was disgusting. Being a NY crowd doesn't excuse it. Nothing at all for them to be proud of - booing during this sweet and accomplished young woman's moment of glory - turning her to tears. New Yorkers should feel ashamed.

So maybe you should find some better people to spend time with. There are small minded people everywhere. They make up a majority, not just in Japan, but in Canada and just about everywhere else. That's why it's great that Naomi has won. She helps these small minded people improve, and helps other mixed race kids in Japan get closer to real acceptance.

Lol. Serena's coach admitted to cheating. The umpire didn't steal anything - why should he back down and let Serena's team try to steal victory from a superior opponent?

Naomi won in every way. Her services were excellent. The speed was like 115-118 mph in comparison to Serena's 100 mph. Her strong returns forced Serena trying too much to cause lots of service errors. And most surprisingly Naomi was calm and composed. Serena was not. Naomi dominated the game. We have a genuine champion.

How would she be treated if she lived in Japan? Any thought?

Serena Williams is going home with her pride, her perseverance, and her no-apologies attitude.

But thanks to her lack of self control, she WON'T be going home with $3.8 million dollars.

Kudos to Naomi Osaka, an inspired perfomance, showed the temperament and strength of character to achieve victory against a partisan crowd and an opponent who claimed to be a victim of sexism. Ho humm.

From a business standpoint, she is about to be the face of many Japanese companies after this.

Serena needs to be locked up

I think that is going a bit far, but it us sad to see the greatest ever female tennis player, in the autumn of her career, respond like this. A pathetic display.

The audience were even worse. You do expect a bit of from tennis fans, although maybe not in New York.

Congratulations to Naomi on a well-deserved victory. She showed grace and class even though many fans booed her and her idol Serena was less than classy. In retrospect, Naomi's father made a wise decision in choosing Japanese citizenship over Haitian or American citizenship for her, as she was able to get more publicity and sponserships from Japan.

Not only some Japanese, but many Americans and other fans and observers in other countries have been whining about this. Reading the comments on blogs after Naomi's win, I've found many whining and complaining that she shouldn't be considered Japanese, but American, since she lives in America. Suddenly, Americans want to claim her as their own it seems.

Brilliant, classy performance by Naomi; shameful performance by Serena and the NYC (my hometown) crowd. Yes there's racism, yes there's sexism, they need to be addressed; throwing hissy fits at the expense of your opponent is not the way. I don't remember Arthur Ashe acting this way, or Althea Gibson, or James Blake or Chanda Rubin or Zena Garrison or Martina Navratilova or any other minority player and I'm sure they had plenty of reasons to. This is just low class narcissism, Serena makes everything about her. Well, at least this time she didn't threaten to shove a ball down someone's throat.

Congratulations Naomi. Only 20 years old too. Lots of good tennis for Japan and the world to look forward to. When passions cool and detachment sets it, her title won’t be overshadowed by the final’s circus. It will be fortified by it. She didn’t just outplay Serena. She out-poised her and adapted to an unforeseeable scenario, as champions do.
