Her tennis ability is incredible and I look forward to her dominating women’s tennis for years to come.

Williams and the crowd were a disgrace. The poor girl had to accept victory in tears :-(

24 ( +28 / -4 )

Well done Naomi, but that New York crowd was absolutely disgraceful. what has the world come to?

Total class from Osaka, who apologized for winning, just to appease to philistines in the crowd. I hope a few them actually were humbled by that.

That picture of her holding her well-deserved trophy is so sad. I don't think I have ever seen a more depressed champion.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Dear's deeply my hearty congratulations to sister NAOMI OSAKA and also will get more grand slam tournament i am prayer to god.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Well deserved. Said long. Score when the media was focused on others that she is the one to watch for Japan. Now, of course, they are. Hope she continues to make the nation proud.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

“Said long ago when media...”

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Oh, she's Japanese now?

She is always Japanese.

I will admit, I was wiping tears from my face when Naomi-chan held the famous US Open trophy. Now, fight for the Gold in Tokyo 2020, Naomi-chan!!!

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

Now that she has reached the age of twenty she will have to decide if she wants to be Japanese or not, but considering she only live here until she was three, I think that makes her more American than Japanese.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

She is always Japanese

shes always Haitian also and an AMerican citizen. The more halfu Japanese kids represent Japan the more Japan will come to realize that being Japanese isnt being a race its being a culture. As it stands now Naomi seems far more like an average AMerican teenger than a Japanese one and shes accepted as that regardless of her complexion and looks.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

Now that she has reached the age of twenty she will have to decide if she wants to be Japanese or not,

It is actually 22. By law she need to decide between Japan and US citizenship. However, many people in Japan do not do this and still hold on to their dual citizenship. However, she is famous now and I do not think she can avoid the hard decision.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

However, she is famous now and I do not think she can avoid the hard decision.

its not difficult she was born Japanese citizen , she can choose J citizenship, J government has no jurisdiction over other countries nationalities and they know it, which is why they do nothing.

I’m a American and I’m so proud of Naomi Osaka’s accomplishment! She played an outstanding match and should hold her head high. Please note, the NYC fans boos were directed at the power grab umpire who stoled the true match from Naomi and Serena. Naomi is a very Beautiful Woman who reflects her background. From now on I’m fan of Naomi and will only wish her best in her future tennis career.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Its a shame people tend to focus on her being Japanese or not, rather than her achievement.

Well done Naomi, you deserved this every bit.

Shame on Williams and her supporters.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Congratulations to HER, not her ethnicity, not her nationality, none of that BS. Congrats to the athlete that won the US Open. She dominated just about all her opponents and deserved this victory! Congratulations Naomi!

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Just such a shame that Williams tried to turn the whole thing into the Serena show. Disgraceful behaviour from both her and the home crowd who were obviously hoping for a an American victory. She was fined last time she did this lets hope this time its bigger and that it reminds her that sport is all about fair play and not tantrums when you don't have it go your way !

Naomi deserved this in all its glory yet has had that once in a lifetime moment snatched form her by a petulant sore looser who knows her carer is on the wane!

Full credit to the umpire as well of not giving into such a hostile and biased atmosphere!  I hope that he continues to umpire and wont give into the haters!

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Disgraceful behaviour from both her and the home crowd who were obviously hoping for a an American victory.

The most disgraceful crowd of the major tournaments blinded by their flag and on flow with their Leader ..

Congratulations to HER, not her ethnicity, not her nationality

True, tennis is one of the world's most individualistic and cosmopolitan sports, if not THE most. A player's passport has nothing to do with their success. Although in Osaka's case, it should be pointed out her residency in America was key, since that is where she learned and developed her craft.

From Wiki:

"As Ōsaka has dual Japanese and American citizenship, her father made the decision to register her with the Japan Tennis Association when she began her career.

Really pleased to see the first Japanese woman win a grand slam - hopefully it will inspire more to take up tennis.

Regarding whether or not she retains her Japanese nationality, it's entirely possible that after the horrible way she was treated by the US crowd - which had nothing to do with her behaviour - she may decide she'll just stick with the people who actually support her (the Japanese).

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Osaka's win "will be an inspiration to not only Japanese female tennis players, but all kids of mixed race people in Japan who strive to show pride in their heritage."

Well said. Hopefully this will happen. However, the Japanese people may not be as supportive as you think.

I've never saw a more disgusting final, horrible sportsmanship from Williams, pulling out the mother card, the feminism card, the race card, everything she's got, the moment she felt starting to lose... Poor Osaka, she deserves much more, well played, strong and constant.

Oh, the public was just as disgusting as Williams...

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Osaka's interview. She's really gracious:

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Congratulations to her. Of course, many Japanese people do not really see her as genuinely Japanese, either racially, ethnically or culturally. But this may be forgotten now that she is a winner.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

You are ‘haafu’ to the half wits. You are double fullu to me.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Those surprised by the crowd are obviously not Tennis followers esp of grand slams and esp of the US open.

NY crowds are notorious for unruly behaviour as well as famous for their passion. I recall many years ago when an Australian player exited mid-match with a torn rotator cuff and they booed the shyte out of him. That's NY.

And their most favourite daughter in sporting history - born & bred NYorker Serena Williams - at the age of 36 came back from giving birth 1 year to the day to her first child with life threatening complications, to arrive once again on the hallowed ground of Arthur Ashe stadium for possibly the last US final of her career. In such a scenario emotions run high, very high.

Naomi was a great champion today, and she may even chase down the 24(?) grand slams of Serena, possibly the GOAT. I hope so.

But please spare the us the whines and cries of foul unfair play.

Serena is where she is because of who she is, and it is her effervescence that has delighted millions for 2 decades. She has lifted womens tennis like no one else has.

And she can very tempremental. Good on her.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

I saw Osaka's post match interview. She was very charming and gracious - shy, but with a glint of humor. A true champion. Serena...whatever... she lost it - but that's hardly a first in pro tennis. The crowd, however, was disgusting. Being a NY crowd doesn't excuse it. Nothing at all for them to be proud of - booing during this sweet and accomplished young woman's moment of glory - turning her to tears. New Yorkers should feel ashamed.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Of course the liberal media is in full support of classless Serena Williams. It’s surely sexism and racism, no doubt about it, they claim.

because men who played in the 1970s and 80s got away with it, she says. Media Gotta protect their Nike commercial darling at all costs.

She ruined the entire ceremony and the first important win of another lady’s career with her nonsense. An actual heartfelt apology is in order. Probably won’t get it.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Ah-so: "Congratulations to her. Of course, many Japanese people do not really see her as genuinely Japanese, either racially, ethnically or culturally. But this may be forgotten now that she is a winner."

Exactly! I know some people who LITERALLY said "She is not Japanese" a couple of years ago, who were speaking praises of "their Japanese champion" today. Same people who told me Kazuo Ishiguro is not British, but Japanese 15 years ago, but last year bragged about how Japanese he is when he won the Nobel Prize.

My point is, you cheer for and respect the person, or you don't. You don't disrespect them because you believe they are not "pure Japanese" one day and then use them to bolster your nation the next when they have overcome the very criticism you unload on them.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

It seems some of you have reading comprehension issues and blame it on the liberal media:

the Arthur Ashe crowd, who had booed chair umpire Carlos Ramos and U.S. Open officials, for having beaten the American star.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/naomi-osaka-made-history-became-star-u-s-open-012201060.html

Nobody booed Osaka.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Black: Is the BBC part of the liberal media?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Don’t know don’t care. But they also went out of their way to support Serena Williams and make excuses for her.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/45463752

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The crowd was not booing Naomi - they love her over there (if you've seen her after-match interviews)

But the booing was affecting her happy award ceremony

The crowd was booing the situation - how poorly it was handled. Serena and the chair umpire handled it poorly

They don't want a grand slam finals match end like that, no matter who wins

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I know some people who LITERALLY said "She is not Japanese" a couple of years ago, who were speaking praises of "their Japanese champion" today.

So maybe you should find some better people to spend time with. There are small minded people everywhere. They make up a majority, not just in Japan, but in Canada and just about everywhere else. That's why it's great that Naomi has won. She helps these small minded people improve, and helps other mixed race kids in Japan get closer to real acceptance.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Please note, the NYC fans boos were directed at the power grab umpire who stoled the true match from Naomi and Serena.

Lol. Serena's coach admitted to cheating. The umpire didn't steal anything - why should he back down and let Serena's team try to steal victory from a superior opponent?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Naomi won in every way. Her services were excellent. The speed was like 115-118 mph in comparison to Serena's 100 mph. Her strong returns forced Serena trying too much to cause lots of service errors. And most surprisingly Naomi was calm and composed. Serena was not. Naomi dominated the game. We have a genuine champion.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

How would she be treated if she lived in Japan? Any thought?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Serena Williams is going home with her pride, her perseverance, and her no-apologies attitude.

But thanks to her lack of self control, she WON'T be going home with $3.8 million dollars.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Disgusting show by the NY crowd:

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Disgusting, wasn't it? Typical boorish Yanks.

Don't wrap up all Americans into one category. Us West Coast folks never do or condone how fans are on the East Coast particularly NY fans.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Good for Her but it ain't a total win for Japan. It is a win for Naomi Osaka and Congrats!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

So the 20 year old beat the 36 year old who is almost 37. Congratulations, Naomi!

And whether she decides on U.S. citizenship or Japanese citizenship within the next 2 years is totally up to her. Though born in Japan, she grew up in the U.S. since the age of three. If she decides on Japanese citizenship, she'll be Nah-omi. If she decides on U.S.citizenship, she'll be Nay-omi.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Kudos to Naomi Osaka, an inspired perfomance, showed the temperament and strength of character to achieve victory against a partisan crowd and an opponent who claimed to be a victim of sexism. Ho humm.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

And whether she decides on U.S. citizenship or Japanese citizenship within the next 2 years is totally up to her.

From a business standpoint, she is about to be the face of many Japanese companies after this.

Nippon!!! Serena Williams why is she complaining? Both are females, why shout sexism??

You just know that Trump is going to tweet about this horrible display of sportsmanship. Then the blame will shift to “the culture that Trump has created” and “trump is a racist for criticizing a black athlete”

Why do you have to drag everything back to Trump? If he tweets we can discuss it. But let's not have debates about imaginary tweets.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Serena needs to be locked up

I think that is going a bit far, but it us sad to see the greatest ever female tennis player, in the autumn of her career, respond like this. A pathetic display.

The audience were even worse. You do expect a bit of from tennis fans, although maybe not in New York.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Congratulations to Naomi on a well-deserved victory. She showed grace and class even though many fans booed her and her idol Serena was less than classy. In retrospect, Naomi's father made a wise decision in choosing Japanese citizenship over Haitian or American citizenship for her, as she was able to get more publicity and sponserships from Japan.

Of course, many Japanese people do not really see her as genuinely Japanese, either racially, ethnically or culturally. But this may be forgotten now that she is a winner.

Not only some Japanese, but many Americans and other fans and observers in other countries have been whining about this. Reading the comments on blogs after Naomi's win, I've found many whining and complaining that she shouldn't be considered Japanese, but American, since she lives in America. Suddenly, Americans want to claim her as their own it seems.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Brilliant, classy performance by Naomi; shameful performance by Serena and the NYC (my hometown) crowd. Yes there's racism, yes there's sexism, they need to be addressed; throwing hissy fits at the expense of your opponent is not the way. I don't remember Arthur Ashe acting this way, or Althea Gibson, or James Blake or Chanda Rubin or Zena Garrison or Martina Navratilova or any other minority player and I'm sure they had plenty of reasons to. This is just low class narcissism, Serena makes everything about her. Well, at least this time she didn't threaten to shove a ball down someone's throat.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Congratulations Naomi. Only 20 years old too. Lots of good tennis for Japan and the world to look forward to. When passions cool and detachment sets it, her title won’t be overshadowed by the final’s circus. It will be fortified by it. She didn’t just outplay Serena. She out-poised her and adapted to an unforeseeable scenario, as champions do.
