So no mandatory 14-day self-isolation, then? No Polymerase Chain Reaction negative test result obtained within 72 hours of departure, printed on actual paper and signed by an actual physician, then? What about the rest of us whom may not be Olympic athletes, then...?

I think Japan just wants a few token athletes to show up and then they can claim all of the gold medals and the local propaganda machine can go full-on.

Please bring the virus to this island group. We still have empty hospital beds. Sarcasm.

BTW, sports usually hAve no social distancing and close physical contact.

Japan, stop kidding yourself. This is going to be a joke of an event, if it happens at all.

Yet another set of rules for another set of people. The rules are useless if they do not apply to everyone.

You think sport events have no special distancing? Are we forgetting the trains? Have you seen restaurants at lunch and dinner and Friday nights in Tokyo. Im supprise no one is infected which makes me believe this virus either is a lie or its extremely a weak exaggerated cold virus.

No way to social distancing can happen in Japan unless you live in the boondocks

Athletes and Chinese people with money. Shoes how much Japan cares

I own a bar which profits average of 500.000 everyday. No social distancing , no rigid face mask rules and have seen no infection since march. In the other hand 2 of my best friends infected , my local gym and a cafe next to my house in my home country quarantined because of COVID. I think there is something strange about this virus in Japan.

This sounds serious business.

Looks to be that Olimpics are really happening.

Don't forget, the rest of us plebs have to ask the clinics to print their results not on any old form, but on the form from the Japanese embassy or immigration. A foreign hospital or clinic's own certificate isn't good enough.

I think that the best idea is to cancel 2020 Olympics and just give Japan the 2028 Olympics. By 2028, there will be vaccines, cures, etc., and we won't resist or revolt against all those athletes coming from COVID hot spots like the USA coming into Japan and spreading the plague. We have one of the world's lowest rates of infection/death. So give Japan the 2028 Olympics!

Wow. What are you doing posting on Japan Today when you should be at your bar, maskless, on a Saturday night, your most profitable day, no doubt?

we open at 8 and do you think i stay at the bar when i have already 8 staff working ?

Not always.

If the rules applied to everyone, we could have no international trade during covid times. None. No one would be allowed from one country to another.

The reality is, we can't stop living life for 2 years. Things still have to happen. But rather than throwing up our hands and letting everyone in, or being ridiculous and letting no one in, they're minimizing the number of people who can come in.

provided they submit proof of having tested negative for the coronavirus

In the UK you can buy these certificates now! And many parts of SE Asia.

and take sufficient precautionary measures while in the country*

C'mon - reality check! Once they've passed Immigration and Customs, they'll be mixing and mingling until they leave!

The Chinese gymnasts just got to Narita, all full suited with antiradiation wear from top to bottom.

Long term resident? Have family? Own a business? Employ people? Pay your taxes? NO come in.

Athlete for our White Elephant? Got cash to splash? Welcome.

Sickening treatment of PEOPLE!

Proving once and for all that the current steps they have in place are arbitrary and utterly devoid of meaning. Great job, Japan!

very true. it's not a joke but reality. I read post about it on Debito.org website.

Japan now "fight" to be Business Hub in Asia after H.K. Very interesting. Once businesses establish here and then comes to something like covid19 again, then a few bosses or employees won't be allowed in while on business trip abroad. For example Singaporean Gov. during their lockdown wrote on their website that Citizens and Residents are welcome to return home. I point on those words again RETURN HOME. It gives very clear message to business world where the next hub is, not to mention language barrier that almost don't exist.

Seems to be a very realistic balance plan. And as usual, there’s a lot of people who are even against that.

Hey, there’s no guarantee that the Olympics will happen, but you got to start somewhere. Strangerland is right, if the rules applied to everyone we couldn’t have international trade, or live in a way that make our modern society as it is.

At those current exponentially rising numbers over the globe you first must still find some athletes in about 9 months and then in addition try convincing them to be transferred to the venues together with their intensive care beds and ECMOs after an exhausting many hours long flight. That’s a very bad scenario, admitted, but still a rather possible one.

Stupid.

The Games should be cancelled in the name of fairness.
