Congrats to the guy, but for people here to pat themselves on the back for it as though they had a part or personal investment in Iwakuma's success smacks of deeply rooted insecurity. The second Japanese to pitch a no-hitter... big deal! Let's put it into context and list how many people out of all major league pitchers in history. Not trying to diminish the man's accomplishment, but again, making a huge deal when a Japanese athlete does well is silly; especially when, how many now? are on the DL?

Actually, the only one that is insecure is you. There has been only 290 pitchers since 1876 (or 291 since 1875...don't understand why the graph doesn't start as Joe Borden as the first) that pitched a no-hitter. (Note that he pitched through all 9 innings, too). That's quite remarkable considering how many games have been played since the beginning of the recordings. So even if you put it into context, it is an amazing feat. Just because no Korean mlb pitcher has ever pitched one, doesn't mean it's not a big deal.

Congratulations, Iwakuma! It just caps off a historic day in which all home teams won their games! Great job!

Congratulation. When Iwakuma pitches against Angels, we gripe why Angels did not try to sign him, We did not think rhat when Tanaka was signed to Yankees. AL West champ race is far from over. Mainers still has chance when A's is down and Angels losing every day. Rangers is not doing well either.
DaDude
I am not worried. Angels will be back but need to pick up things offensively. Houston is playing over their heads. Angels are still in the wild card lead and I believe they will win the west. I went to 2 games last week, 1 was terrible and 1 was great.

Toshiko if you think the Mariners will win their division keep dreaming they always fold!

I'd be happy for him if I'd know what a no hitter is :) . Yeah it's obvious: I'm from Europe;) .

Smith, pitching a no hitter in the American League (which uses the DH - designated hitter) actually is a big deal. Do you know how many no-hitters there were in the AL in the last 3 years? One.

For the last 17 no-hitters in MLB:
14 - no-hitters performed by NL teams
3 - no-hitters performed by Seattle Mariners (AL)
0 - no-hitters performed by other AL teams
