Others praised Nishikori for his Yamato damashii - Japanese spirit.

“It is great news,” said Nobukazu Yoshimizu, a financial institution employee. “He’s Japanese, he’s rather small physically, yet he is full of energy and spirit.”

Seriously? Just as I mentioned yesterday. Every significant accomplishment by any Japanese athlete or team becomes an excuse for Japanese self-congratulation on being "Japanese". And, of course, NHK and the media just feed this. Does anyone else remember the insane way they featured every single hit Ichiro got a few years back when he was chasing an MLB hitting record? Led the NHK news every night.

“This will have a huge impact on the sport here and I expect many young children will be inspired to emulate him.”

Now that would be great, and is a positive outcome from him being Japanese, rather than a bunch of salary-men taking false pride in his victory.

I am watching this on CBS in US. To my understanding, you may be able to watch this on Wow Wow, Japan.

Nishikori looks great. Hope he goes all the way to the final.
