Besides, no convenient nearby tracks in other countries in this region are holding one.

There were many races run with no crowds from 2020 to 2021, and some recently with huge crowds.

Perhaps Suzuka really needed the gate money, and looking at the Olympics they were not ready to print tickets that might end up being cancelled.

European football, F1 in other countries, everywere else competitions are going on even with public!

Only in Japan no F1, Olimpics and sports without audience, etc.

Just facts.

J League, Baseball and Sumo all have audiences. Even Fuji Rock is selling tickets!

There is no clear strategy. It's just which ones please the "anti" crowd,

Spreading the virus leads to collateral damage like this

By continuing to spread the virus, there'll be others

It's because foreign racers would be coming in and face a risk from the mostly unvaccinated population. It is for their protection. It's certainly not about sports or proximity because baseball and more are still on.

Like many others I wonder why one is cancelled but the other wasn't. Neither the main Olympics nor the Paralympics were cancelled. If this can be cancelled, is it too late to cancel the Paralympics?

@gaijintraveller - The F1 was cancelled because of logistics, not because of the virus and the increased threat to the population. Because of the F1 calendar, they couldn't get all the teams, (engineers, mechanics, staff etc.) into Japan and through quarantine in time for the race.

All those participating in the olympics and paralympics aren't on the same tight schedule and have plenty of time to arrive in Japan and go through the quarantine process.

I agree with you that they all should be cancelled based on the current COVID situation, but that is my understanding of why the F1 has been cancelled but the olympics hasn't.

Why?

I agree with those who say it shouldbe cancelled. I ask why because I cannot understand why it is so much more dangerous for the populations than the Olympics. Like many others I wonder why one is cancelled but the other wasn't. Neither the main Olympics nor the Paralympics were cancelled. If this can be cancelled, is it too late to cancel the Paralympics?

My understanding is that this wasn't cancelled because of the rising infection rates per se, but because there wasn't enough time to get all team crews through immigration and quarantine and into the country in time for the race weekend.

Don’t worry… Disneyland is still open…. Life is good.

It is good and very understandable.

Change the name to

the motoring Olympics and it will be fine….

This year's Japanese Grand Prix has been canceled following discussions between the government and race promoters, Formula One organizers said Wednesday.

I suppose some events are more equal than others.
