In September, he made a plea on Twitter for either Manchester United or AC Milan to sign him, tagging the two clubs in a post saying "give me an offer".
Geez... how sad can this guy be?

Honda has never been short on confidence or arrogance, it's why even despite his hatful of fine World Cup goals many Japanese people find him unpleasant. Personally, I quite like the guy, Nippon footie needs a few more big charachters like him.

Good player. He’s had a good career. As ClippetyClop said, he’s a character.

No, what Japanese football needs is a few more big characters who can back it up.
People pay attention to Lebron James because he's the best player in the NBA.
People pay attention to Tiger Woods because he's got 82 PGA wins.
People paid attention to Muhammad Ali because he backed up his mouth with his performances.
People pay attention to Serena Williams because she's the GOAT female tennis player.
Meanwhile, people like Kyrgios or Bernie Tomic barely raise a blip and are forgotten a year or two, or only live on in YouTube infamy as laughing stocks.

Well, I certainly wasn't putting him in the same bracket as those names! Are you implying that sports people who aren't the absolute best aren't worth praise?
He hasn't done badly, scored big goals in three World Cups, played a hundred times for his country, played all over the world. In last years World Cup in Russia I remember him coming on from the bench and having an absolute stormer. He ain't no Cristiano Messi, but he is (was) a good player. Rumour had it that my club Liverpool were close to signing him a decade ago.

Yes, in some ways he's like Japan's David Beckham.

Ummm... only in that they both play(ed) soccer professionally. That's it, and that's all. Beckham could back up any arrogant talk (and he was not nearly as arrogant as Honda is) with years of outstanding performance. Honda cannot.

Honda is probably Japan’s best ever World Cup performer. He was absolutely superb in 2010 in particular and scored in the 2014 and 2018 tournaments too.
He does good work for the underprivileged as well.
Seems like a decent lad as well as a good player. Best of luck to him. He’s one of the best players to have come out of Asia.
