Do they have to take part?! No funding if they don't? I hope xenophobic Ishihara loses yet again. Tokyo/Japan can't afford this and the majority don't support it.

And if it makes no measurable difference, there is still a good five years to work on the 2024 bid.

I think, I hope Tokyo will get it. We know we can do it, Nagano was a success. Makes no sense if it goes Madrid gets it because of proximity to London. Istanbul .... chance, but I see it coming back to Asia esp after Rio.
tmarie
Why? Seoul had it in 88. When has it ever been around turkey?
sfjp330
Istanbul, Turkey will be a great site for 2020. Also, maybe Los Angeles or San Francisco would be a ideal choice. These two cities have facilities in place and do not have to build anything. Tokyo would not be ideal destination for people from abroad. It's crowded, expensive, and not fun.

If it flops, then i'll forget in resquesting permanent residency, for no ways necessary

But for Barcelona, site of the 1992 olympics, a true magnet for the bid of the 2042 Youth Olympic Games

LA had it in our lifetime so nope. I think there should be a rule about. It having it within 500km for 50 years.

sfjp330 - No chance of the US getting the games again, they hosted it in the 80s and 90s. Turkey is a good shout - Spain probably have no chance considering they probably don't have anywhere near the money required to improve infrastructure, etc to host the Olympics.

While Tokyo is indeed crowded and may not be the ideal choice, so are other cities which have hosted or will host the games. I guess you have not visited the city, otherwise you would know that Tokyo has plenty of facilities in place and many people find it fun and a great place to visit. Also, it has improved its connectivity with Asian and western countries recently, its public transport system is considered one of the best in the world and though many Tokyotes at present may not want to host the Olympics, they will do their best for the organization if Tokyo happens to win the bid.

A 2020 Tokyo Olympics would be AWESOME...I don't understand why there isn't more support enthusiasm over this!

I'm up for anything that may increase the chances for declaring finally that all smoking is banished indoors. Good air to breath again in restaurants and izakayas, etc! That would be the very best long lasting effect of bringing on the Olympics to Tokyo. Except for the smoking, Tokyo (and Japan) is a great place to be.

Tokyo may not get the Olympics because of Tokyo's right wing mayor. What is his name?
bruinfan
But that won't stop Japan from spending billions in tax money to build all new facilities for everything.
YankeeX
Tokyo has previously hosted the Olympics and I doubt that they will again. But it would be interesting if they did though!

It still hasn't been paid for. How do you judge a debt as a success?

Rooting for Istanbul. Japan's latest rash of racism towards its Asian neighbours proves it is not a place where the games should be held. Its neighbours may be just as bad in that regard, but they aren't vying for the games at the same time. What's more, the JOC said matter-of-factly that Japan would win more than 15 golds and this would help secure the games. Media here also called foreign Judo athletes "animals". And of course, Ishihara, who wants the games in Tokyo, is probably the biggest bigot you could ever find.

Mirai: "A 2020 Tokyo Olympics would be AWESOME...I don't understand why there isn't more support enthusiasm over this!"
Maybe because people are tired of Tokyo using the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an excuse one season, and the disasters of last year the next to try and get the games. That, and, oh! perhaps because instead of saying it would help the people of Tohoku they could actually help the people of Tohoku by donating the money that the bid requires -- 27 billion yen, is it? -- to Tohoku instead of using them as an excuse for the bid. Many of those people are still in shelters, or committing suicide over their losses. I'm sure they'd rather see some security than hear about some right-winger's promise that they'll be entertained in 8 years at their own expense now.
smithinjapan
Bottom line, Mirai, is that maybe if Japan stopped proclaiming itself the victim of anything and everything and tried getting the games on this they deserved, they might get them. As it is, claiming they are the victims of everything while they fight with nations they have victimized in the past just doesn't fly, does it? Especially when those nations they raped have given so much to Japan after the disasters of last year. Noting shows less deserving of the Olympic spirit than Japan's recent slaps in the face to its neigbours, who helped them out after the disasters of 3/11.

Just because a country can afford to host an Olympics and the city may be capable of it and so on, that does not always mean it should. And not only because it keeps antagonising a neighbour - or two (if that was the case, few countries - including those who have already hosted one - would ever be allowed to host an Olympics), or plunges a country or a specific city into debt. I agree with SmithinJapan about Japan using its money for more essential matters like the people of Tohoku who desperately need that bid money to rebuild their towns and cities. Japan needs to think about its priorities big time. They say it will take decades for Tohoku to recover. If that is so, then Japan will just have to support Tohoku (and other parts of Japan like flood-hit regions) for as long as it takes instead of spending money on something just to show off. Hosting the Olympics is of course an honour if you can afford it (and Japan can and has done before) but if youre hosting it just because youcanthats not the same honour.
