Wow. He is walking away from $16 million! Not sure many people would do that.

Well praised for his poor performance.

“After lots of very deep thought and deliberation, I have decided to return home to resume my career in Japan,”

I don't follow baseball so I don't know how he's doing but is the above expression a euphemism for 'I ain't doing so well here, so I'll go back home'?

pukey: yep he can set up a nice career after baseball by playing a few more seasons in Japan. Never really did a lot for the Mariners except merchandising.

The opening paragraph of the Seattle Times article on this says a lot -

The Mariners were freed from one of their most burdensome contracts Monday when catcher Kenji Johjima opted to return to Japan to resume his career.

Joh will get more playing and enjoy the game more in Japan, that alone will make him twice as productive. He might not make anywhere near rthe same money, but there's a lot to be said for being at home.

So he's surrendering. What a competitor.

His performance has been awful to put it mildly. I think the Mariners would be willing to pay him not to play...

good for everyone involved.

He's a crybaby, in my opinion, ever since he threw his bat down in the WBC, and stalked off after a called third strike, then got tossed out of the game. This is just further proof that the man has some issues. He can't seem to handle the fact that a rookie is getting more PT, so, rather than man up, get better, get healed, and get rested here in Japan, and go back and try to do better and be better, he's "taking his ball and going home." Good riddance, I say. I was happy to see him go four years ago, but his little tantrum during the WBC made me lose all respect for him. Whichever team he goes to, just be mindful that the man is a primadonna....
