Women envy the new wife as they can see the dollar signs. That's pretty much it. Most men who envy Ohtani do so for various reasons, I would think, but in terms of the marriage are probably just wondering if his wife is hot.

Leave the two alone and let them have their happiness.

Our city got three of his baseball gloves last month from his "give all the kids baseball gloves to play baseball" campaign. He's a good guy and has his head in the right place. Thank you, Ohtani.

A city with only 3 kids, interesting.

BTW, I noticed how direct and cold he is in brushing off pesky and annoying questions from the Japanese press. In contrast, he's a bit friendlier and relaxed when talking to the US media. He's smart and knows the J-press focuses so much on immature things and he doesn't really like them.

Decidedly less vague about the type of union and to whom when compared to, let's say, Hanyu.

And, many people distract their eyes from problematic government or innumerable social issues by such topics.

It's sad when ya can't even take your spouse (and in the future, your kids) to the ballpark

Is this even national news? honestly most people do not care if a wealthy talented boy got married.

Happy for him but really not relevant in the grand scale.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Really couldn't care a less tbh !!

So grotesque, so intellectually limited to even care who this dude being paid big money for doing a boring « sport » is getting married to. Japan is so intellectually limited this is sad

And in other countries, celebraty gossip isn't news?

@Quo Primum

And the fact that your comment is getting more 'down' votes than 'up' votes is evidence that many people slobber over the lives of celebrities and give them borderline 'cult worship.'

I disagree. Things aren't so black and white. It is possible for people to follow the lives of their favourite celebrities, and to feel emotional about big changes, without going to the point of obsessing over them or "worshiping" them.

Congratulations to the couple.

I hope Ohtani learns a thing from figure skater Hanyu-san who cited harassment by the media as cause for his divorce.

Japanese media can be unforgiving sometimes towards their celebrities.

Whoever she is, she's $700,000,000 richer!

It’s his own life! Congrats!

If I was that dude, I'd be playing the hell out of the field and I'd delay marriage for about 6 years.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Ohtani got married?

That's nice.

I have to get back to work.

You can’t help but pity all the empty existences of those who live vicariously through their idols and sports heroes.

Exactly -- well said.

@Yrrall.

Not everyone marry for money.

They are just happy being together.

@Asiaman.

Rumours say she's a basketball player.....

Just a “normal Japanese woman” he’s known for about three years. Just “a standard proposal.”

Congratulations Ohtani senshu!

Hope his wife is not much older so they could have children.

Ichiro's wife is 8 years older than him. No children.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

I hope this will not turn into another Hanyu Yuzuru case where the poor woman gets targeted by paparazzi and journalists with no moral values.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

What Ohtani does when not on a baseball field is his own business and people should leave him alone.

Since Ohtani is already the top baseball star, there is very little room for his wife to "lift him to new heights" , something folks tend to project onto others' relationships. The only way for him as a player is down, and therefore a good chance that the daggers will come out to blame his new wife. Japanese pitchers are notorious for breaking down in MLB after a few seasons, usually shoulder or elbow injuries attributed to overpitching for their schools when they were young. I hope it won't happen to him, but its a well trodden path.

I get the same comment from woman and that is they hope it isn't a joshi announcer like every other athlete. I just hope Ohtani is able to continue his success, he's a guy I can look up to despite being the same age.

Are you comparing living together with a spouse, with living together with a cellmate (in jail)? C'mon, no marriage is that bad! I hope...

People who are joyful and envy the marriage of anyone, do not have any idea what marriage is or feels. The hardships involved in harmonizing two different human beings under the same roof or cell are tremendous.

Breakdown of the morning news:

8:15-8:30- Same exact clips and interviews from first 15min

8:30-8:50- News panel breaks down each interview answer sentence by sentence

8:50-55- Weather and commercials

That’s why they say never meet your idols!

Congratulations Otani san, I feel like a member of my family just got married!! Good Luck.

So many people have forgotten Hideo Nomo who was the first break away baseball player to leave Japan and open the doors to the US for other players like this guy. Nomo took such heat for leaving Japan by the news media and others, and after he became a success that all changed for him and others who chose to leave for the US shores.

Congrats on his marriage and many more years of success.

"I'm a guy and I'm jealous of his partner"... really? He's not gonna take you out drinking and your butt might be a bit sore in the morning!

Italian author, Umberto Eco, in ""Travels in Hyperreality ", a collection of essays , writes of this phenomenon in Italian football.

He writes of how the sport is subsumed by gossip about what a players wife wears or what they eat, drive or where they spend the holidays....with connection to a discussion of football lost in the background.

I sadly predict the infantile among the Japanese press wont help this couple in any manner...more paparazzi stalking, inane questions and the like.

Still, the couple can afford to live anywhere...I suggest Tahiti.

All the very best to Ohtani and his wife - may they have a long and joyous life together!

Well, not worth to take a day off. Maybe many women like her had a secret hope, marrying a successful and rich guy to get away from their routine life,

This often happens to fans of single celebs. That is why they have these dumb "no dating" rules amongst idol groups. A taken idol might lose them some crazy fans who think they actually had a chance with that idol and pumped tons of money into them.

5 ( +13 / -8 )

she was "shocked" and wanted to take the day off.
