A wise move. An empty spree is rejected by mature citizens.

Hey, I like this local government. All local governments should think like this.

Both the Summer and Winter Olympics ought to have permanent homes. I don't care where - call it Los Angeles and Stockholm, for example's sake. The Olympics is held there every 4 years. Those two cities can build and maintain the necessary infrastructure, while all other cities don't have to bankrupt themselves. Plus, the facilities in those cities can become historic. Currently, future Olympians have no chance to run on the same track that Usain Bolt did, or swim in the same pool that Michael Phelps did, etc. But making permanent, "historic" facilities can make those facilities part of the Olympic legend, the same way that certain stadiums or arenas in any sport can be historic. It adds to the appeal, and we can stop playing this foolish hosting game.

Go on you, Calgarians, says this former one.

Olympics should be funded with private money, so no more taxpayer money

I have voiced this opinion in the past, and I would suggest Greece, specifically Athens, for the summer games. The IOC could build and assist with upkeep of the facilities with membership money, and Greece could get a huge economic boost.
But since the summer games are in Europe a different venue could be selected for the winter games, and do the same thing!

Seems only nations or cities with serious insecurity issues and inferiority complexes want the Games these days, knowing how much it will cost them economically and even politically. Good on Calgarians for saying no. Hope people listen because the IOC is so completely desperate for bids it would take Calgary in a heartbeat, probably.
