For all there is to love about the British people, there are plenty of racists arseholes there!

Now we cant disagree with each other and then no outlet except violence.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Are you saying that people should be able to 'disagree' with people by way of monkey chants, verbal abuse and throwing things at them?

Do you want a law that allows that?

not a stretch to cover political ideologies as well as race

What do you mean? What ideologies are you referring to?

I saw the incident on TV, I have to say I wasn't convinced that it was a racist gesture. Looked like he was just bouncing around a little. That said, the pictures didn't show what he was saying, nor were there other angles.

I'm sure they'll find out, and if it's true then he should be flung out of every stadium that he enters

Hope the guy is charged and given the max, and of course banned for life from buying tickets for any and all sports venues, and ejected immediately if found having obtained them. There should be no place for racism, bottom line, and the worst thing these guys fear is not being able to watch the sport they love to be racist at.

Other leagues should do the same and perma-ban

Aren't there enough cameras in the stadiums nowadays

Awesome news, this shows how European football, especially in the UK and Germany took the right path in punish such fools, unlike other parts of the world where they claim that racism is not an issue.

Doesn't seem like much to me. He's not even looking at Fred and appears to do a strange little backwards shuffle. He was probably out of his mind on MDMA and gassy lager. Of course, chucking lighters at the Manchester United players, even though they are Goldman Sachs soccedevils, red scum and a total disgrace, is not acceptable and those responsible should be banned.

If the guy in this story violated a law in any way, I would like to know what law that is.

Criminal Disorder Act 1998

"at the time of committing the offence, or immediately before or after doing so, the offender demonstrates towards the victim of the offence hostility based on the victim’s membership (or presumed membership) of a racial or religious group"

One must personally threaten with physical violence that person or a group of people, based on race or religion. Those laws do not apply as he did not threaten with violence

Wrong I'm afraid. Hostility will suffice. Even if you are racially hostile to someone who is not of the race that you presume they are.

These laws are just common sense. And if it soothes your outrage, this law would also cover you.

One of the reasons why I have never been interested in football.

I think they need more evidence than the YouTube video posted by @Clippetclop. On a cold day you could easily do this by accident and have your life ruined.

Sure, eject him from the private association (stadium), but arresting him for making gestures???? He should be free to make whatever gestures he wants as long as he knows other people will avoid him and PRIVATE associations can ban him, but not the PUBLIC govt (police arrest, etc). The English Bill of Rights still exists

Upvote for the diligence in posting the law though. Thank you.

Since when is "racism" a crime?? We are really going down a terrible rabbit hole once we start criminalizing opinions.

E.g. I find the Trump haters on this forum horribly and sadly misguided, but the last thing I would claim is that they are criminals.

If the guy in this story violated a law in any way, I would like to know what law that is.

Well they got that now, not a stretch to cover political ideologies as well as race. Now we cant disagree with each other and then no outlet except violence. #Englandhasbillofrightstoo

Liberal, labour, conservative, green, etc. Dont wanna go down that rabbit hole. Freedom... a famous US justice once said that my right to swing my fist ends where another's nose begins. As it stands with that law, I have no right to even think about swinging a fist or gesturing.

And if he hit the person, that is grounds for arrest. The article stated he was arrested for making racist gestures, not hitting or throwing something.

The queen has a very small role, but her advisors, secretary, and constitutional consultants should advise her from giving assent to anything that violates the constitution (magna carta, bill of rights, etc).

Did the offender do anything besides mock the person? Did he physically touch (slap, hit) the victim? Yeah, it's bad, but everyone's taunted someone else based on race, religion, hair colour, freckles, glasses, etc some point in their life. Everyone would be on some sort of registry or have criminal record. Don't think even the Soviet Union arrested people for gestures, racial or otherwise. Sheesh....

Zichi:

One must personally threaten with physical violence that person or a group of people, based on race or religion. Those laws do not apply as he did not threaten with violence (at least not from this edition of the story). Police will probably be sued for overreach.
