Nadal, Osaka both out of Wimbledon; she'll go to Olympics

Sadly Osaka will likely play here, why, well just like nbc for the $$$, her sponsors are mainly Japanese & NOT showing up here, well that would be INTERESTING for sure, but she knows who pays her salary

Tennis shouldn't be an Olympic sport anyway. Like golf, soccer and baseball, it already has its own huge global profile and premier tournaments. Also, you can tell the players don't value a gold medal as highly as they do winning a GS event, so it's just a "nice to have" award and a chance to cosplay and Larp at the opening and closing ceremonies for them.

The Olympics is just a bonus to tennis, and these withdrawals show us how commited the players actually are to it when some inconvenience or other negativity is involved.

This is very true. When the debates start over who is the greatest player - male and female - Grand slams and weeks at number one are basically the yardsticks by which these things are debated. Nobody cares about who won at the Olympics.

I think she or her people got it completely wrong on the interviews issue, but holding back and pretending she is going to the Olympics is a good PR move for now. When the time comes, she can just have "tight hamstrings" or something.

Will she be confined to a crappy room in the Olympic village bubble with the foreign athletes following the playbook or as Japanese athlete will she be free to go and do whatever she likes like the other Japanese athletes. Of course to do that she should have the 14 day quarantine like other returning Japanese citizens but I can’t see that happening. I guess she gets the best of all worlds, no quarantine, and no lockdown bubble like retuning Japanese politicians, foreign dignitaries, IOC bigwigs etc

Good point. I'm leaning on different and special treatment for her. The virus doesn't care what nationality you are. Then again, it's likely she still has her US citizenship.

As for whether she'll pull out of the Olympics at the last moment, I'll believe it when I see it. Money is very important to her (and probably her grandfather).

Excellent news, she needs more time off to recover properly! I recommend she takes the whole year off, and possibly next year too, just to be on the safe side. Then, a proper medical and psychiatric review in 2023 to see if she is fit and well enough to return to the tour.

Good for Naomi-chan.

If the Olympics goes ahead, winning a Gold medal for her country is a bigger prize than a Wimbledon trophy which she can win next year, or any year.

Plus if she chooses to team up with Nishikori in doubles, it could easily be 2 Golds!

Question for those who love Naomi Osaka's social justice stance and hate the Olympics, which side will you choose?

I’m ambivalent about her whole “social justice warrior” shtick. I think she does it for the right reasons, but it can be a bit cringe at times, especially when compared with the “I’m too delicate to talk to the press” stance.

However, if she came out against the Olympics and said she wouldn’t be there because the games are clearly nothing more than a capitalist wet dream, I’d be down with that.

There are many upon many Japanese protesting the Olympics. Sad that there are still people that judge an entire population based on government decisions and nationality.

Osaka has played at Wimbledon three times, twice exiting in the third round and losing in the first round in 2019.

Smart move for Osaka. The Tokyo Olympics will be played on hard courts, the surface on which she performs best. She’s never performed well on grass (Wimbledon) or clay (French Open).
