Never heard of Cordae but I guess he is not Japanese. I wonder how it will go down in Japan.

cause I’ll be at Aus 2024

I’ll believe it when I see it

Love you all infinitely

does she really ? Seems like a bit of empty lip service that a lot of people throw around these days

-7 ( +14 / -21 )

I though she was suffering from depression? Is this really a good time to be a mom? And i don't think she will ever able to return to her peak in tennis anyway in 2024. Her tennis professional days are over. She should just enjoy life considering she made tons of money already to never worry about work.

@Moonraker

Never heard of Cordae but I guess he is not Japanese.

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship, when it's obvious she's culturally American based on her choice of mate, where she lives, etc.

-14 ( +15 / -29 )

Great news - all the very best to you Naomi! Some things in life are way more important than sport. Another Major winner Ash Barty recently announced she was pregnant too.

Is this really a good time to be a mom?

Do you go around asking that question to other pregnant women you see who you feel arent ready "to be a mom"? I guess you'd know best.

As expected with any Naomi Osaka story, a wave of negativity and hatred follows from grumpy, dissatisfied-with-their-life middle aged guys.

13 ( +28 / -15 )

Samit, what that mean, interracial relationships in America are normal

9 ( +11 / -2 )

@Fighto--well said. Maybe they should ask themselves, Is there ever a good time to be an angry chauvinistic tennis fan? It is doubtful they can be bothered to learn the names of five other women tennis players to give us a break from their negativity. Will be happy to be proven wrong but. . .

8 ( +17 / -9 )

Well, it's none of our business right?

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship, when it's obvious she's culturally American based on her choice of mate, where she lives, etc.

I got to know her mother Tamaki quite well while living in Florida as she worked for a vendor that my company used.

A quite charming family. Lovely girls, her Sister is an outstanding tennis player too.

Naomi could have played tennis for Haiti or Japan. I think it's quite obvious why Japan was chosen!

Many international tennis stars base themselves in Florida as the standard/proliferation of coaches and facilities means it's easier to get the best training.

The dedication and mental toughness that someone needs to get to #1 in that sport is just phenomenal. Pile on top the vitriolic poison from the print/internet media and it must be unbearable.

Wonderful news for Naomi and I sure she will make a terrific Mum.

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship...

As said it's none or your/our business however it's a smart move.

Japan does not allow dual passports/citizenship (although many people do have it) so it's easier to have Japanese citizenship and US residency.

N.Knight...

Many international tennis stars base themselves in Florida as the standard/proliferation of coaches and facilities means it's easier to get the best training.

I'm sure Florida is a great base for tennis but her mother has stated that the reason the family left Japan was because of the racism they faced. Something Naomi, or rather her sponsors do not want mentioned.

Hope the birth goes well and the child does well!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Oh.... career, date someone, and get pregnant! Good role model for young women!

-19 ( +4 / -23 )

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenshi

Which would you choose if 80-90% of your income is from Japan?

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Oh.... career, date someone, and get pregnant! Good role model for young women!

I am sure that Naomi’s child won’t want for anything

And the days of the stigma being attached to being a single mother are long gone!

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Osaka has been dating Cordae, a rapper, for years.

LOL

invalid CSRF

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

A single mother only means someone not married. There are millions of unmarried couples with children.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Hmmm. Another out of wedlock pregnancy. I wonder what her traditional mentality sponsors think.

-12 ( +6 / -18 )

If anyone can afford to be a single mother, it's Osaka!

Congratulations to her.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship

No hard evidence has actually ever been provided that she actually renounced her US CItizenship apart from her saying she would in 2019

Her name has never been listed on the "Quarterly Publication of Individuals Who Have Chosen to Expatriate" federal register list so it virtually certain she remains a US Citizen to this day

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Naomi Osaka to become a single mother?! :—o

I wouldn't let that fruitcake look after my jacket.

-13 ( +6 / -19 )

What does "wedlock" actually mean? Locked into a wedding. Wedding-lock. There are hundreds of millions of couples who do not believe in it. They stay together for their love and have offspring.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

What does "wedlock" actually mean? Locked into a wedding. Wedding-lock.

No. It's from Old English wedlac (offering a [wedding] vow, promise, pledge).

The -lac, noun suffix is unrelated to 'lock' (as a means of fastening or confining); that comes from a different Old English word,  loc.

So the '-lock' in wedlock signifies, from -lac, 'demonstrable action, observable practice'. Which is what love is, really. In my house, anyway.

Nice try.

I think Osaka career is over. u have to work hard in order for you to be one of the tops, and i guess Osaka is not doing so.

Wishing all the best for her and the baby.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

@Samit Basu

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship, when it's obvious she's culturally American based on her choice of mate, where she lives, etc.

It's because it's her life and her choice. Pretty obvious I guess.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Great news Naomi. Hope this event and time away from the game you obviously love will allow you to rekindle your desire to play at the highest levels.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

After baby is born, she will have even more mental health breaks...

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

*I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship, when *it's obvious she's culturally American based on her choice of mate, where she lives, etc.

Don't know her ethnicity but she's probably Japanese because of the name. Is she American as well?

That probably played a significant part in the decision

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@awomde

No hard evidence has actually ever been provided that she actually renounced her US CItizenship apart from her saying she would in 2019

Very possible. Many Japanese citizens have dual citizenship.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Don't know her ethnicity but she's probably Japanese because of the name. Is she American as well?

She's ethnically Japanese, born in Japan, with Japanese citizenship, but grew up in America with American citizenship.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Wedlock means a marriage by a contract that can only be ended by divorce.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

So much hate instead of trying to congratulate.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

She never said she is/was a US citizen. The press assumed she was, but she was Haitian. She did say she was "technically not an American," but the press can be pretty incompetent.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

It will be interesting to see what the government of Japan does.

Unless married or the man specifically admits before birth the child is his then future registration as to who is the father becomes more difficult.

Basically unless proper steps are taken as a Japanese citizen the child will only be her's if something happens to her the child custody will go to her mother not the child's biological father.

But I wonder was this planned?

If not why were they not taking proper precautions?

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Speculation of Osaka's private life.

Osaka will be the mother.

Why does the government of Japan need to do anything?

The child born in America is automatically an America. Later they can decide on Japanese citizenship if they want it.

Osaka or the child does not have to do anything for decades.

"If the child is born abroad, he/she may acquire both Japanese nationality and a foreign nationality at the same time as Japanese nationality. In this case, in order for the child to continue having Japanese nationality, the father or mother must indicate an intention to retain Japanese nationality."

"In addition, a child who has lost his/her Japanese nationality because there was no indication of the intention to retain his/her Japanese nationality can reacquire their Japanese nationality by notifying the Minister of Justice as long as certain requirements are met"

https://www.moj.go.jp/EN/MINJI/minji78.html#a06

"For children born outside of marriage, either the mother will form a new koseki, or if she was alone in a koseki, the child will be added to hers. For a child to be noted on their father’s koseki or for the father’s details to be recorded in an entry in the mother’s register, the father would have to go through the procedure of acknowledging paternity."

Congratulations to Osaka.

And its none of anyone else's business what her Marital status is nor what nationality she chooses for her child.

The public speculation should stop at where her public life does.

Mind your own business and wish her well or better yet, be silent.

Nemo

couldn't agree more. Her personal private life.

Yes, I hope you feel the same way about ever celeb and person of power.

sports people are not elected officials and presidents. The lives of elected representatives are very much in the public kaleidoscope and open to scrutiny.

And therefore, contrary to what you said below, you DO think that celebrities are open game:

Not to rag, but to make a point when necessary, but other than that, no one really cares.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

I said it once and I will say it again. I mentioned that she gained a lot of weight and she was pregnant! Congrats to her!!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Samit Basu What nerve you have!! Saying "it's obvious she's culturally American based on her choice of mate, where she lives, etc". regardless of her choice she can chose who she wants even if it was a bum she will still have a great life. Perhaps your culture is different from hers and I can bet so is your lifestyle, so whats your point besides hiding behind a subliminal racist comment? Regardless of citizenship that is also her choice, I am sure it was purely a financial choice!! When you have MONEY you can live anywhere citizenship goes out with the dish water it doesn't matter!!!

@Moonraker

Never heard of Cordae but I guess he is not Japanese.

I was wondering why she chose Japanese citizenship over American citizenship

She chose Japanese citizenship. This does not require choosing it 'over' American. She is likely American as well. If she ever was. If she wasn't, then that would be even more of a reason to 'choose' Japanese.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@Seesaw HMMMMMM, there's a big difference being a multimillionaire single mother and having a child out of wedlock than a single poor mother getting handouts from the government. She can be a single mother laughing all the way to the bank all the while getting paid from sponsors and if they stop the sponsorship she is a millionaire over. So whats your point? She is not begging and I am sure the child will have a lifestyle you can not even imagine!

Hmmm. Another out of wedlock pregnancy. I wonder what her traditional mentality sponsors think.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Omedetoo. Time to take a break Miss Naomi.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

As Japan does not recognize dual citizenship, dual nationality children are required to give up one of their nationalities at age 20 (It’s a stupid outdated law). Osaka chose Japanese citizenship.

As a functional matter most dual nationals that are not famous avoid this by keeping their heads down.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

She was never a US citizen. She was Haitian and elected to choose her right to Japanese citizenship to play in the Olympics.

Even more interesting is that not a single US visa was issued to any Haitian (her father) within two years either way of them "moving" to the US.

https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2021/08/15/is-naomi-osaka-haitian/

If she relinquished her supposed US citizenship, she would have had to leave the US. She didn't leave, because she was living in the US on a green card.

It's pretty simple to understand.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Neil,If her father an American, she an American, their are 10 of thousands of Japanese, that can travel too the US , because on their parents are American

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As Japan does not recognize dual citizenship, dual nationality children are required to give up one of their nationalities at age 20 (It’s a stupid outdated law).

Not exactly. Japan doesn't recognize dual citizenship, but through grey areas (this is Asia), it is legally possible. At 20, dual citizens have to declare an intent to get rid of their other citizenship. There is no legal requirement to follow through with that intent, no timeline in which it must be done, nor a punishment for not doing it.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Very happy for her.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It will be interesting to see what the government of Japan does.

Nah, it really won't. I couldn't care less.

Congrats on the kid and good luck, that's really it.
