I though she was suffering from depression? Is this really a good time to be a mom? And i don't think she will ever able to return to her peak in tennis anyway in 2024. Her tennis professional days are over. She should just enjoy life considering she made tons of money already to never worry about work.

I got to know her mother Tamaki quite well while living in Florida as she worked for a vendor that my company used.

A quite charming family. Lovely girls, her Sister is an outstanding tennis player too.

Naomi could have played tennis for Haiti or Japan. I think it's quite obvious why Japan was chosen!

Many international tennis stars base themselves in Florida as the standard/proliferation of coaches and facilities means it's easier to get the best training.

The dedication and mental toughness that someone needs to get to #1 in that sport is just phenomenal. Pile on top the vitriolic poison from the print/internet media and it must be unbearable.

Japan does not allow dual passports/citizenship (although many people do have it) so it's easier to have Japanese citizenship and US residency.

She's ethnically Japanese, born in Japan, with Japanese citizenship, but grew up in America with American citizenship.

She never said she is/was a US citizen. The press assumed she was, but she was Haitian. She did say she was "technically not an American," but the press can be pretty incompetent.

It will be interesting to see what the government of Japan does.

Unless married or the man specifically admits before birth the child is his then future registration as to who is the father becomes more difficult.

Basically unless proper steps are taken as a Japanese citizen the child will only be her's if something happens to her the child custody will go to her mother not the child's biological father.

The child born in America is automatically an America. Later they can decide on Japanese citizenship if they want it.

She chose Japanese citizenship. This does not require choosing it 'over' American. She is likely American as well. If she ever was. If she wasn't, then that would be even more of a reason to 'choose' Japanese.

As a functional matter most dual nationals that are not famous avoid this by keeping their heads down.

She was never a US citizen. She was Haitian and elected to choose her right to Japanese citizenship to play in the Olympics.

Even more interesting is that not a single US visa was issued to any Haitian (her father) within two years either way of them "moving" to the US.

If she relinquished her supposed US citizenship, she would have had to leave the US. She didn't leave, because she was living in the US on a green card.

Not exactly. Japan doesn't recognize dual citizenship, but through grey areas (this is Asia), it is legally possible. At 20, dual citizens have to declare an intent to get rid of their other citizenship. There is no legal requirement to follow through with that intent, no timeline in which it must be done, nor a punishment for not doing it.
