NASCAR’s in an unenviable position. The series has been on a downward financial trend for years. So they’ve got to keep their main fan base (white, southern, very politically conservative, not going to use the “R” word but we all know that it’s there) while somehow expanding beyond it.

Getting a new, diverse set of fans while not alienating this base has got to be incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Bubba could be a kind of crossover star that could do this, but the results in the track just aren’t there for him so far. Maybe one day that will improve.

In the meantime, I imagine NASCAR will remain in this kind of cultural limbo, with poor ratings and sponsorship opportunities to match.
