If Kotozakura, a Japanese wrestler at the second-highest rank of ozeki, had won this past tournament and been promoted to yokozuna, would we be seeing articles comparing him to all the previous Japanese bad actors in sumo — the ones who have been tossed out for gambling, violence, etc.?

I sincerely doubt it.

The Mongolians own sumo. If Blinkin' Ishihara were still alive, he'd be saying they were playing like beasts.

Wishing him luck. He’s a good ambassador, he sang Kimi ga Yo, and the spectators responded enthusiastically to his fight, his tournament victory, his smile and his honesty in the interview.

As Asia man stated - what on earth has highlighting "I will not tarnish sumo" to do with his success.

He is his own man.

Asashoryu was his own man.

I hope there is no paparazzi style media focus on his life - day in and day out.

That'd be the pits.

Congratulations on his promotion but I think it's one done by the board in a panic to ensure there isn't a vacuum at the top. Hoshoryu just about managed to get a winning record in September and his record over the last few years, though good, shows more losses then what other Yokozuna in recent years tend to have.

Have play the role. Personally, I hope he has an edge like Asa vs that conformist Hakuho

Everyone is right on this.

Sumo association has the right to remind Hoshoryu to behave well as some predecessor Mongolians did not behave well including his uncle.

Readers are also right as Japanese has a tendency to praise their own and lower all foreigners cunningly. Example from Sumo: when they talk about Oho, they will always mention his grandfather (on the mother side) who was Yokozuna but never mention his father who was a Sekiwake and was dismissed from Sumo for being involved with Gambling.

Hoshoryu is nothing like Asahoryu

He has achieved kachikoshi in 19 straight basho and acquitted himself admirably. Compared to Kotozakura who had a miserable tournament in January and showed no fight, Hoshoryu manhandled most of his opponents and always gives 100%.

And while his uncle was a “bad boy” of sumo, he has become an incredibly successful and immensely wealthy businessman since his retirement. He deserves a lot of credit for breaking barriers and becoming one of the most successful Yokozuna in history.

Staying away from alcohol will surely help. And from toxic people.

A very odd headline.

A very odd headline.

It just means he promises to observe the strict customs and courtesies of Sumo.

Such as not stepping over a felled opponent, not displaying emotion in victory or defeat, etc….
