“That’s going to be my next goal, to go to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon,”

Don't set your goals too high there, young lad. You know most of the people who make the top quarterfinals set their goals to actually win the tournament, not just beat their coach's record.

By the way Nishikori, you are already more successful than Matsuoka. You're world number 11, Matsuoka only made 46, so time to forget that mediocre has-been and set your goals a bit higher.

papasmurfinjapan, kind of sounding like grouchy smurf mate. Matsuoka was an inspiration for many japanese kids in the early to mid nineties as being the only japanese player to achieve significance. He may not have been the most successful player, but he's played a role in brining up the next generation. Give the man some credit.

Well... the king of Japanese mens' tennis. Which is a bit like being the king of Welsh men's ski-jumping....

Yes, today I'm a bit grouchy. : ) I understand that Matsuoka was popular in his day, but honestly, he had one good day of tennis almost 20 years ago, and he (along with the Japanese media) has been flogging that fluke effort as the greatest moment in Japanese tennis ever since.

If he was humble about it, I'd admire the guy, but this whole Matsuoka personality cult is a bit disturbing.

What on earth does he have to emulate? He's already made more of a mark than that tarento has ever made up to now. I'm getting so sick of Matsuoka's name coming up every time Nishikori is in the news. Then again, with this sempai-kohai crap, I'm sure he's under social pressure to mention Matsuoka every time. I just hope Nishikori never makes a fool of himself and dance around the court after winning a match at Wimbledon. It wasn't a nice sight.
