Use something ale way built. That stadium in Yokohama, I think. The whole 2020 Olympics is a debacle now why bother with something new? What a pig's breakfast this is turning out to be.

Nothing in mind yet for stadium, says Olympics minister

Don't worry. It's early days yet.

The committees are going to very busy writing reports to each other, conducting studies, holding meetings to decide which reports are needed and what studies have to be conducted, writing reports on all this, holding more meetings to discuss the reports, more meetings to decide the agenda for the next meeting, writing reports on the suggestions for the agenda, discussing those points, writing reports on the discussion.

It should move into the actual planning stage in, five years or so.

When was the Olympics again?

Abe does not trust Endo?

Tokyo won two years ago based largely on its organisational prowess and reputation for efficiency

As is the case with most countries and peoples, image and/or stereotypes from abroad are usually very far removed from reality.

This alternative proposal was created for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Stadium and more importantly the people of Japan and the world. Please have a look and like the page if you support the idea. Time is running out so I wish Japan to succeed.

Where will this mess Endo? As the clock keeps ticking and D-day approaches, expect weirdo quick-fix solutions and a jerry-built stadium or something worse.

Some the more rational solutions might be: (1) enlisting Japanese children to build a stadium out of Lego blocks (2) buying Greece's Olympic stadium, disassembling it, transporting it to Japan and reassembling it (3) at the last minute claiming North Korean agents had poisoned the Olympic grounds and so the Olympics have to be cancelled.

Of course using something already built, as sensibly suggested by sillygirl, will never be on the table.

But of course we’re using peoples’ tax money

Yet another halfwit who thinks governments spend "taxpayers' money". Well he's welcome to come to my place to help me find my yen machine, cause I've misplaced it somewhere. And there are two big issues to watch for coming out of this mess. One, there probably won't be time for any run-through, small scale warm-up events to make sure everything is running smoothly, as is standard procedure for new stadiums. Could result in major screw-ups during the Olympics. Two, and more important, will be worker safety. Trying to complete huge, large-scale construction projects on a tight schedule and with a deadline is generally a recipe for trouble.

I think just stopping at "Nothing in mind" and showing pictures of Endo, Abe, Aso, Mori, and a few others sums it up pretty well without having to explain further.

if things aren't ready in time and/or money runs out, it wouldn't be the first time… ever wondered why the Haneda monorail ends at Hamamatsu-cho rather than the logical-not-to-mention-convenient Tokyo Station?

Tokyo has also backed away from another pledge that helped it win the hosting rights—its promise to hold most of the events within 8 km of the Olympic Village—in order to save money by using pre-existing venues. A few venues are likely to be so far away that athletes will not even stay at the Village.

The world is just getting another taste of Japanese business, get the contract, then over-charge, make a ton of cash for the owners, and apologize away, all while laughing behind their hands at the people who got sucked into their world.

Nothing in mind, says cabinet

Osaka_Doug,

Using the already build stadiums in Yokohama makes great sense.

It does. But that would make it the Yokohama Olympics.

And there would be no kickbacks for Abe and his friends and relations!

But Endo, who described how on the night of July 24, 2020, opening ceremonies will commence at the stadium, “which should be completed by then,” said Japan’s reputation for getting things done should remain undamaged.

I hope this was a bad translation, and Japan's Olympic Minister did not literally say "which should be completed by then".

Yet another halfwit who thinks governments spend "taxpayers' money".

Guy, can you please not try to turn every story involving Japanese government spending into an opportunity to launch into another lecture on your half-baked economic theories?

All the worrying and all the money spent....watch it all go down the drain as soon as something happens at Fukushima. Anything can happen up there in five years and Abe has said that all is under control so don't hold your breath. I've said it before, "what if they gave an Olympics and nobody came?"

Japanese People: It's not too late to cancel hosting the entire event. Massive public protests against spending the tax money could tip the scales. Don't saddle future generations with unnecessary debt. Think of your children and grandchildren's futures.
