People in Shohei Ohtani's home prefecture and cities across Japan were elated Sunday by the two-way star's record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Why? What fool wants to contribute to the wealth of an already insanely affluent man through higher ticket prices, higher electronic viewing fees, and higher prices by sponsoring companies such as New Balance, Seiko, Kose (personal care products), Salesforce, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Japan Airlines, and Boss?
Is society ever better off when we increase the wealth gap and make goods and entertainment less affordable? Certainly not.
Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda have spent billions of dollars through their foundation doing a lot of good to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty across the world. But do we celebrate their accumulation of greater wealth?

For what they’re paying Ohtani, he must be feeling the pressure. I hope Ohtani plays phenomenally well, but what if he bombs.

As far as goods are concerned within the U.S., his Dodgers merch won't sell as well as his Angels merch outside of L.A. because a lot more fans hate the Dodgers more than they do the Angels. Same goes with people not being into Yankees merch outside of NY because many hate baseball fans them. Don't worry about Japan. They will jump on whatever bandwagon he plays on.

Ohtani's first game as a LA Dodger will be in March in Seoul Korea against the San Diego Padres. You best believe Korea will make money as well as everyone else who is on the Ohtani band wagon. Everything will sell and go up. The airline tickets to Korea will probably double and ticket sells for that game will be insane because many Japanese will head to Korea to see that game!!
