Ohtani is a true champion.
But the article doesn't mention the controversy over the homerun.
The ball was handled by a spectator in the field of play in an attempt to catch it.
The umpires ruled that it would have gone over the fence, so a home run.
Videos showing the balls trajectory and where the spectators outreached hand contacted the ball inside the fence, would seem to indicate it as a non-homerun.
With spectator interference the umpires had 2 calls - a run to 2nd or a homerun.
They went for the latter, no doubt afraid that keeping Ohtani homerun-less on his native soil would spoil the fantasy - lol.

Interesting theory
I thought so too. The fans reached over the fence. Years ago, you would never have seen fans in Japan reaching over the fence and interfering in that way. They are either losing their minds over Ohtani or becoming more American like. Either way, It’s quite unfortunate.
also, very unusual that the AP doesn’t mention this. I guess the writer wasn’t sure so just left it out
