of COURSE he does! I called this when he and others were supposedly "retiring" from International events -- said Honda would want to lead it, and that they'll let him because he's Japan's golden boy despite almost always kicking the ball into the stand or giving away the ball to the other team. The world will be focused on Tokyo, so he naturally wants to be the center of attention.

Go away Keisuke. Let someone else have some spotlight.

Soccer at the Olympics? What's the point? The competition will be nowhere as good as World Cup.

Have to disagree, Trev. Bunch of us went to see the women's final at Wembley in the 2012 games. We'd booked that as we had a feeling the team would do well. Unfortunately they were beaten that game by the American team but the atmosphere was electric and the fans were brilliant.

If a player almost always kicked the ball into the stand or gave away possession, he’d be dropped.

You don’t score in three World Cup final tournaments by doing what you said.

It’s just not possible.

Honda doesn't have the physicality to play full games at the WC level anymore, but he can still kick that ball like few others, that was clear to anyone watching the world cup. Getting subbed in in three games and getting one assist and one goal, as well as that wonderful free kick against Belgium that almost won them the game, you have a super substitute. Honda has been a great player for Japan, possibly the best ever and letting him play at the Olympics, which generally is not regarded as an important tournament but will have an amazing atmosphere would be a great sendoff for one of Japans great footballers.

Hes way over rated. Over hyped by J media of course. His ego wont let him just go away, unfortunately.

No clue about the game and this football player..unfortunately :)

oh come on, Honda's been spiraling down the road of retirement for a while now, hope the JFA lets a younger player participate instead. He was getting worse at Milan (and the whole team has been awful for years), was average in Liga MX, and now the competition in the A-League is a few steps below the J-League... he won't be competitive in 2 years!

Also, who researches these articles? Honda has already joined Melbourne Victory.

i respected him, may be he is a bit of age now but does not mean he is a bad player due to aging.

nowadays young people love to criticize oldies like they will forever 21.

i was so lucky and happy to be in japan and brought the worldcup t shirt with his name and # 4 on it.

Yabba dabba doo. looking forward to 2020.

Jimizo: "If a player almost always kicked the ball into the stand or gave away possession, he’d be dropped."

But he's not because he's the media's golden boy, as stated. He WAS dropped, by Europe, when he successfully warmed the bench and nothing else. That was after he cried about not getting to Europe in the first place like Kagawa and when he angered Russia by saying he deserved better. Now where's he going? Australia?

Bingo!

Do you think the World Cup Isn't the best teams playing the best teams and the Olympics is all contrived and all in all irrelevant? Soccer has a primo event, which the Olympics should be, but will never be for soccer. Sucker? What is that all about?
