Per capita in the Olympics all time for gold medals and all medals New Zealand ranks in the top 10 so I suppose they don't duck to much.

Back on topic please.

This time, under global pandemic conditions, I would give them all a gold medal, if they pass a corona test and a doping test and an IQ test by deciding better to stay where they usually are. Won’t be much more medals than before, don’t worry. lol

A hard call for some - Valerie Adams for example in her last Olympics after winning medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Athletes should just harden up and go I reckon. It is the pinnacle of just about every sport.

Some New Zealand athletes may choose to skip the Tokyo Games this year due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Radio New Zealand quoted Kereyn Smith, the head of the country's Olympic committee(NZOC), as saying on Wednesday.

Let the drum beat begin until the thick-skulled LDP gerontocrats and their cronies finally face the music.

Of course the consequences will still be borne by the public.

Am sure NZ won't be the last country to suggest this...

Timid? Ok, try telling that to a Kiwi face on face, might need a mirror to see timid.

Some of the best sailors in the world are kiwis.

Uhhhh! Let's see. Rugby? Ever heard of the All Blacks? There you go, and I'm sure Cricket is another.

Everyone is quickly rushing to mention the obvious and forgetting that non- of these your beloved sports is part of the Olympics. NZ non- participation wouldn't be felt any tiny bit. Guess if China/US/Kenya etc pulls out then that will be seismic movement

Hockey too, been pretty good at that.

Errr....Rugby, softball, running on one leg then jumping over a banana, you know typical Olympic machinations, compeditive roller skating, biggest sneeze (many gold) , The biggest would be the, why the hell bother, turn up into a breeding pit of virus, can't wander around, compete against those that turned up, not the best, when not ready then go home immediately to 2 weeks of isolation. Sounds as it is, just not worth the effort.

oh no smiling, Oi are you displaying enjoyment? 12 months detention while we try to make you admit it. The hopefull Olympic.

Rugby Union, cricket. Look it up

Are any of these Sports part of the Olympics?

These 200 athletes are in for their harshest decisions of their life.

With New Zealand on full lockdown for the next year, even if the athletes manage to snag medals, if they manage to get infected by the virus they will be shunned upon and their efforts will be for naught. Still, the Olympics comes just once every four years, and the athletes might not be in their prime anymore when the next one is up.

It's ultimately a gamble with hints of risk management.

Any country that is actually concerned about their citizens would do good by really looking at how Japan is handling this crisis. The mere fact that this modern country still hasn't started vaccinations and probably won't complete it until after the Olympics is a tell all. Once more countries begin voicing concerns about these games look for the JOC and LDP to start the falsehoods about the Games' safety. Be wary.

Hopefully more countries will come out with the same concerns until the whole thing is cancelled. Since it is completely obvious the national and local government consider the Olympics a much higher priority than the health of the population the Japanese may depend on everybody else doing the right thing forcing the hand of Suga and Koike.

They may just be afraid of bringing home the virus even though they have great border controls but chances are those who dont want to go are against getting vaccinated

8 ( +11 / -3 )

How so? Skipping the elderly, healthcare professionals or critical workers?

those folks will be done by end of March. In addition, NZ wont see the debacle that is now the US trying to roll out vaccines. They have only 5m people to vaccinate and as everyone has seen right through this pandemic, they know what they are doing.

Common sense.
